Tell us all about the first card that you just HAD to have, regardless of price.
For me, waaaaaay back in the day, it was Lord of the Pit. I saw it on display at the shop and the Timmy inside me got a nosebleed. I forced my mom to buy it for me, then paired it with Breeding Pit and went to town.
Relic Barrier. For the simple fact that my friend had Icy Manipulator, which at the time I swore was the most broken, unfair card in the world. Typical game in my extremely early days would be "at the end of your turn, I tap Barrier to tap your Icy." Every opponent EoT step, every game no matter what decks we were playing.
I loved thoughts of ruin back in the day. So much so I traded jitte for one not long after Saviors was released. It was a fair trade back within the first month
edit: I think I might have went after platinum angel first
Shivan Dragon for me...back in 1994, he was a force, and there were not much other dragons around (at least i wasn´t aware of legends).
But i still have that blackbordered beauty.
I have a Revised Shivan ... I still use it in some EDH decks to this day.
I saw Sliver Queen in Scrye and thought it was the coolest card ever. I didn't actually get one until many, many years later. The one I saw, immediately had to have, and actually bought was Reya Dawnbringer.
Aside, I thought Scrye was done waaaay before Conflux. I had no idea it ran that late until looking it up a second ago.

To a 10 year old kid who got, what was it, an allowance of $7 every 2 weeks? Yeah, still expensive. I remember wanting Akroma too of course but that was a whopping $20 at the time IIRC. About the coolest card I owned in those days was a 7th ed. foil crimson hellkite, but was bummed it could only use red mana since I, naturally, had 2 color decks.

I just assumed by then they were like $0.25 or something.
For me it was Progenitus. Just seeing that card with the words "Protection from everything" made me want to play Magic.
Funny enough, I've never built a commander deck around it...

My Commander decks:
Chandra, Torch of Defiance - Oops! All Chandras.
Prime Speaker Zegana - Draw for Power.
Pir & Toothy - Counterpalooza.
Arcades, the Strategist - Another Brick in the Wall.
Zacama, Primal Calamity - Calamity of Double Mana.
Edgar Markov - Vampires Don't Die.
Child of Alara - Dreamcrusher.
By the time I was in competitive magic and making hundreds at the theatre they were, but casual was a big thing back then and hypnotic specter and the other great casual all stars were still worth big money. Serra angel wasn't reprinted all the core sets for power level reasons lol and while shivan dragon was, being a rare in 4th edition and such basically meant nothing as those sets had overbloated set sizes/150+ rares/chance of pulling a shivan dragon was 1 in 150/retain value quite well. Core sets didn't sell that well either.

Don't laugh, but it was Krosan Colossus. It was a 9/9 creature! It was HUGE! I wanted it so very very badly, and I actually ended up opening it from an onslaught tournament pack (back when those were a thing). I was one very happy timmy.
I started around 7th ed. and absolutely needed to have shivan dragon and serra angel, but couldn't afford them for crap.
They were expensive cards even by the time of 7th edition?
Serra Angel was a rare up till 10th edition. 7th edition was still way before Wizards decided to power up creatures, so it was still a big deal at that time.
I've been playing this game for over 15 years now, and never really felt absolutely compelled to buy any card. My philosophy was, that I could always find a reasonable alternative or simply build something else entirely. I built with what I had. Things have changed a lot though, and recently I did buy a card regardless of price because my deck absolutely had to have it in my opinion (it isn't nessessary though): Gisela, the Broken Blade.
I can remember coveting my friend's Shivan Dragon when I first realised that the card existed...same with another friend's Leviathan when The Dark came out. The first cards I really went nuts after though were Rukh Eggs and Hell's Caretakers for a reanimator deck I wanted to make at the time.

I remember buying a Legions pack on a whim at a Borders and opening Akroma after being out of the game for a while. Pretty ridiculous creature to see if you hadn't been following new cards.

Cards I remember wanting from back in the day: Scaled Wurm. Holy crap, it was bigger than a Craw Wurm! That was huge! The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale. I remember seeing this in 1995 or so for the first time in a card store marked at $40. I never was able to get one till a few years ago when I picked one up for around $380. No regrets.
Around the same time in 1995, I had learned that there were better things than Scaled Wurm. Like Vaevictis Asmadi. "Summon Elder Dragon Legend" might be the coolest words 13 year old me could have ever asked for on a Magic card.
I remember Demonic Hordes being a super sought after creature. And Sorceress Queen/Royal Assassin. My friend spent a year getting his set of Shivan Dragons.
Later my wants would turn to Vesuvan Doppelganger, which still remains one of my favorite cards in Magic. And Balduvian Horde was the beatstick of the year for a while....I could never open one though, I kept getting ^&%^% Force of Will instead which was a $3 card initially.
Of course I always wanted a Black Lotus. It took me forever, but I finally got one last year. It's UNL, but it's mine and it's pretty! Chris Rush was really happy for me, I got it at a GP I was attending he was present at and he signed my toploader. He died a few months later.

Royal Assassin + Icy Manipulator (Ice Age) combo.
Card I hated most was Control Magic.

jester's cap same thing. Didn't understand magic at the time, but it was alluring for some reason.
Then I was attracted to the darkest looking card I had seen up to that point: cabal patriarch and his cabal buddies.
The card that brought me back, however, was tezzeret, agent of bolas
I've never built a Sliver Queen deck either. I can't come up with a concept around her that I actually want to play.
But maybe that not what you mean
as you can see on my avatar, I have finally succeeded although it took many years to consent to its co$t and buy it.
