Another late 90's player here who remembered Serra Angel and Erhnam Djinn being bombs (I played an Ehrnamgeddon deck at the time). Took me a while to get my hands on them.
Then I got back into Magic around M2010 and thought "I bet my Serra Angels are worth plenty of money now!", proceeded to see Baneslayer Angel, and then felt my head explode at the level of creature power creep in the game.
Well, if you'd been one of the cool kids with the Alpha/Beta Serras, you'd actually have been right. Even the foil promo with the Beta art still fetches $30.

Uhm, well I think I have to cheat a little and mention two cards for a reason. The first that I truly wanted was arcbound ravager I believe. It may sound silly now, but back in the day I just got into magic with darksteel, a complete noob mind you, and the theme-decks manual on 'how to improve your deck' told me what a great addition it would be for a modular deck. Never pulled one from several packs, so I said screw my luck and bought a playset online. Had ton of fun playing with them until I lost my interest in magic and sold them (stupid stupid stupid).
Then, I think at the end of New Phyrexia, I got back into magic and my view of the game changed. I got older, had a lot more experience and my perception of cards, value and nostalgia changed as well. But what didn't change over all these years was my genuine love for artifacts. I also got introduced to edh, quickly embraced it as my new main format and as such, my now most sought-after object was a mishra's workshop. I looked it up and saw the price tag of 350 euros, which I thought was way too expensive for one single card. Then, a year or so later if I remember correctly, shops already costed 650 euros and I thought its time to bite the bullet before they get even more expensive.
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
Portcullis and Juxtapose. The moment I laid eyes on them I knew that the mightiest of shenanigans was in my future, and while the Juxtapose shenanigans have been successful (my Sharuum the Hegemon for a 13/13 double strike Uril, the Miststalker, then my tapped Mana Vault for Sharuum back) the Portcullis ones have been less so.
Grave Titan. I had the phyrexian half of the Phyrexia vs Coalition duel deck, with a playset of Diregraf Zombie thrown in. When I found out that Grave Titan existed... I was more than a little bit excited
Balduvian Horde. I eventually traded for three copies from Sixth Edition, but was torn about actually playing them because 6e cards are the ugliest things WotC has ever printed.
(Also, Masticore was a card then, and I was shoving 4 copies into all my decks. The two cards didn't really get along.)
When I first started playing I wanted to build a dragon deck, so any dragons were high on my wish list. At the time my friend had a Volcanic Dragon which I just thought was the most amazing thing ever, I mean it's a dragon and it can attack the turn it comes into play!
Ifh-Biff Efreet-saw it when I was younger and it was cool to me that green had a flyer that could deal with other flyers.
Alternate art Ertai, the Corrupted, after I saw someone crack one at an Invasion block draft when I was a kid. Eventually got one when I got back into Magic.
I could never muster a playset of each. Were way too hard to trade for when they ruled standard.
