I have been reading stuff here for a while and am really so basic a player because I don't have anyone to play against much and my online ability is limited due to lack of fast internet.
This topic below is something that intrigues me so much that I had to register an account just to ask it.
I have quite a number of cards and like to put together whole sets. Whenever I go to walmart I will pick up a pack or two or four over the last couple months. They are the most readily available place for me to get cards. I had noticed in buying them that I never got a mythic rare.
Then I read online about box mapping and such and especially with Eldritch Moon (which I am currently working on a set of). I have bought 15 or 20 packs there this week and NEVER a mythic.
I just got back from there tonight and bought the entire peg that they had of EM and nothing...out of 20 packs...no mythic.
Odd? just coincidence?, Who knows but I understand that Walmart doesn't buy this product to put out. It is supplied by a vendor to walmart and they are responsible for it all...like the small made up amalgam packages of older packs and single cards that they sell.
SOOOO, my question is has anyone gotten a mythic rare from a walmart peg hanging booster pack (not a fat pack as packaged by WOTC).
I don't care too much for the Walmart blister packs as I've been largely um... not disappointed but... meh.
This attitude applies to the three packs and blister packs found at other stores like Rite Aid. Unimpressed.
I believe they're packed by WotC so there shouldn't be any um... discrepancies. Unlike the repacks and the bundles you find that might look like WotC product but really isn't.
Yeah, just sounds like a run of bad luck for ya... Ive opened blister packs from several different big box retail chains and have gotten mythics from them. If you buy fat packs from the big box stores those are good too. Ive had great luck with fatpacks from target.

I have never pulled a Mythic rare over $1, but I have probably only opened 2 boxes worth of packs in 6 years. I think the possibility for the packs to be box mapped is very high. I noticed that people talk about pulling foil mythics more often than jsut regular good expensive non-foils. Foil mythics can't be mapped.

Hanger displays direct from WotC? That would be interesting to find out since to do so would mean it's happening pretty early in the supply chain. If you mean from some jackass looking to make a return on his "investment" and sells 2/3rds of his opened box on eBay or some scuzzy shop picking through the boxes before putting them on display. Absolutely.

This is false. A-holes tampering with packs is why the packaging was changed in the first place. I used to work for Target and would buy packs rather frequently, and sometimes still do. I just recently pulled an Ishkanah, Grafwidow. In fact, Karn Liberated and Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas were among my first mythics when I got back into Magic, all from store-bought packs.
Of course, it's worth mentioning that buying packs isn't the most cost-effective way to build a collection. OP, I know you said that's what's most readily available, but perhaps tcgplayer.com is the way to go for you.
I think it is also worth mentioning that buying a "pack or two at a time" really decreases your odds of pulling a mythic. I am confident you would see a significant uptick in your mythic pulls if you bought 5-8 packs at a time every 3rd WalMart trip instead of 1-2 per trip. Odds of pulling a Mythic are about 1 in 8.

Your odds of pulling a mythic out of any single pack are the same whether you're buying one or a hundred. That's how probability works.
OP, I've pulled mythics from packs bought at Target and doubt I've bought more than half a dozen over the last several years, so it sounds like you're just having a run of bad luck.

If you believe that opening one pack gives you the same odds of opening a mythic as opening 8 consecutive packs, then all I can say is best of luck to you in future pack opening endeavors.

I believe that opening 8 packs gives you 8 1/8 chances of opening a mythic. That's why I specifically said any single pack. Whether you buy 4 groups of 2 or 1 group of 8 doesn't have any effect on the odds of opening a mythic from any one pack. There won't be a "significant uptick in your mythic pulls if you bought 5-8 packs at a time every 3rd WalMart trip instead of 1-2 per trip" and if there is it's most likely expected variance.

You totally missed what he's saying. Opening 8 packs at once has no difference on your chances. Opening 8 over a period of time will have the same chances.

Oh, I understand it. I believe you misunderstand the difference between odds and probability.

Try this. Assume the mythics have a perfect 1/8 distribution. We all know they don't, but for simplicity, go with it. Now take 800 packs put them in 100 groups of 8 where the 1/8 ratio holds. Now, have one person pick 1 random pack of from 80 different sets and a second person select 10 groups of eight. Now, calculate the odds based on probabilities of who gets the most mythics based on the fact they opened the same amount of packs.
That is an unlikely real world scenario, but given that there is a pre-packaged and set amount of mythics in a box, a case, a row of blisterpacks, etc., it is not accurate to say that once a determined amount of mythics in a set have been opened, you are still just as likely to open a mythic in the remaining packs in that set vs. the next set in the sequence.
I used to buy packs from there every so often when I used to work there. I believe I pulled a chromanticore once so nothing special. Now I don't buy much there as my LGS is much closer and a better place to shop
Only place I buy from is big box.
I find the odds better than buying from boxes.
Since the packs are random you can hit a lot better than from a box
A box has 3-5 mythics in it. And not to disparage any LGS but boxes can be searchrd. Assorted big box packs can't be.
You could get mythics in three straight assorted packs.
Just my personal experience but wally and target packs usually are much luckier for ME.
Just got an ancient tomb in expedition from a ogw pack at target the other day.
I also love the three packs they sell, usually older sets you can't find anymore and at a good price. Almost always pull one mythic out of those three, but I have been lucky. Not lately ( on a bad streak ) but that bad streak still included a spell quelled and tamiyo so go figure.

I have no desire to key that much information out, but a simple search engine entry should answer all your questions.
Probability of drawing a 4x card with a 60 card deck on your first draw is 1/15 or about 6.6%.
The odds of drawing said card is expressed as 1:14.
The key difference is that odds are given as ratios of FOR:AGAINST which is why casinos love using these numbers.
Probability counts all the different outcomes.
