Apparently, WotC hired an external consultant in order to create Kaya, the latest Planeswalker, who is a black woman. See
I'm flabbergasted. As far as I know, Jews have never made an issue of Gideon, Caucasians of Jace or Liliana or elspeth etc, Blacks never about Teferi etc. Are racial tensions really becoming so big that people feel offended by details of a fictional character in a fantasy story? What's next? We can't have gods anymore in Theros because people of [insert religion here] will be offended? If WotC goes down this path it will only invite more groups demanding WotC caters to their "special needs".
The best part of gathering around a kitchen table and talk about and play some Magic is to escape the day to day bull***** and relax. Let's keep it that way.

The secret to enjoyable Commander games is not winning first, but losing last.

Not to mention that the Origin 5 Planeswalkers are all Caucasian, which you can imagine makes people question WotC's views on racial diversity. It's a hard topic for some to engage in, despite the fact that racism, sexism and even ageism exist in practically everything touched by human design.
Wizards clearly needed to hire a consultant because as much as they try to be more inclusive, they're sometimes hilariously bad at it. Case in point, Return to Ravnica's soldier token was both literally and figuratively the set's token black person. Also, WotC's offices must be painfully white. Like so white they probably don't need electric lighting.
Regarding Kaya specifically: yay for cool looking characters and inclusion, boo to boring stories.
This doesn't bother me. If they want to waste money on creating something they could have done on their own then they can. All I care about is if the card is decent or not, not about who they hired to make it.

The question is: Does catering to people's sensitivities hinder character design or improve it? On one hand, they can't freely design the character to fit the story/lore but on the other hand, the character might better represent the source material.
I personally don't care what wizards do as long as I get my cards.

I think I'm more upset that they didn't have any minorities on the team to begin with. You wouldn't have to bring in a consultant if you already have a black female perspective as part of the group. White nerd is...a sheltered demographic.
But the assault on white people continues! /s
I've been joking about this for months...but the optics of Chandra, a white woman, saving Kaladesh, a "brown" plane, are hilariously bad. Just wondering how that will play out.
