Almost everywhere in Magic seems like a terrible place to live: take Ravnica for example. The Rakdos are psychopaths, the Orzhov are usurious fanatics, the Azorius are fascists, the Boros are different fascists, the Gruul can't stop killing each other, the Simic will turn you into monster, the Golgari are gross, and the Dimir are manipulative cutthroats. Only the Selesnya are okay people (if you're alright with collectivism).
Other places aren't much better: Innistrad was always pretty bad, and now it's worse than ever. Zendikar used to be okay, but then there was an apocalypse. Theros isn't so bad, but there a lot of vindictive gods running around.
So then: where in the multiverse can a person actually live with a little Peace of Mind?
Probably on planes that they'll never visit in the game of Magic. Magic cards thrive on backgrounds with conflict, so any planes we see will necessarily have some big issues going on.
Prior to its invasion by Phyrexia, Serra's Realm (artificial plane created by Serra) was basically Heaven.
Ulgrotha (the setting for Homelands) was pretty nice during the period when Serra and Feroz were maintaining Feroz's Ban.
Some of the Rabiahs are passable (Rabiah was split into 1,001 planes, the setting of Arabian Nights). Only one of the Rabiahs was hit by Phyrexia.
The Meditation Plane is exactly what it sounds like, but I don't think anyone lives there on a permanent basis. Currently it's only used for Nicol Bolas to chat with his thralls, but the plane itself is quite peaceful.
Equilor is the oldest known plane in the multiverse, and is inhabited by powerful mages who are (1) apparently peaceful, (2) actively conceal Equilor from the rest of the multiverse except from specific individuals they allow in, and (3) took none of Urza's *****.
Well, looking at the current Planes that have been sets...
Mirrodin might have been alright pre-Phyrexia post-Memnarch, but that's a narrow window. Kamigawa... probably now is fine? It doesn't sound like anything too drastic is going on if Tamiyo is fine just running around. Probably in the top 5 running. Ravnica is probably fine too if you're in a Guild and doing less active duty stuff. Clerical work as an Azorius probably doesn't hurt you any. Maybe not happy but it would be safe. Though most guilds have "safe" work for the most part. There are definitely some ways it can go badly but I think it's probably in the top 5 as well. Dominaria... is a definite no. I just can't imagine anything terribly stable/happy for the most part. Lorwyn might be fine too. Ignoring that humans don't exist, pretending you're a Kithkin, it's pretty safe. Shadowmoor is obviously not, and is one of the most terrifying planes. Post-Oona no idea, it's a really big shift. Alara could have been fine, but it depends on which section you're in. If it's after they all merge together then it's going to be in a lot of chaos, but before that living on Naya, Esper, or Bant would probably be fine. Grixis is in contention for worst place, and Jund is only a bit better. Zendikar was fine before the Eldrazi, now not so much. Maybe not in the top five but could have been a lot worse. Innistrad is pretty bad, outside of the times Avacyn is active and not crazy, though even then I don't think it's good. Theros is probably pretty rough, but given it's competition might wind up in the top five none the less. It's got a nice climate at least, and while the gods are active there are some decent ones. Which leaves Tarkir, which... either era seems pretty bad. Khans is better for humans than Dragons, but unless you're part of Jeskai it seems like war is your bread and butter. I could see Temur or maybe Abzan working out. I didn't include Shandalar, Regatha, Vryn, or Kaladesh because I'm not sure we know enough about how they are to judge them, though Kaladesh is changing. Overall? Kamigawa, Ravnica, Lorwyn, Alara, and Theros seem like the best so far. And most of those are kind of dependent on where you are/what you're doing.
IIRC Mercadia is a pretty reasonable place to live. It hasn't had a conflict great enough to base a set on in millennia and its connection to the Phyrexian invasion was very tangential.
IIRC Mercadia is a pretty reasonable place to live. It hasn't had a conflict great enough to base a set on in millennia and its connection to the Phyrexian invasion was very tangential.
... Mercadia's leadership is corrupt, controlled indirectly by Volrath. Mercadia's nobles are lazy hedonists. Mercadia's commoners are selfish and paranoid. The Caterans stalk Mercadia's alleys ready to commit murder-for-hire.
Volrath has been dead for millennia. Saprazzan City or Rushwood are probably the best areas on the plane, not Mercadia City. Though barring major changes Mercadia City is essentially just a giant tenderloin, probably less dangerous than Ravnica, which I would take over a killing floor like Mirrodin or Tarkir. With the possible exception of the Conspiracy plane, which I don't know much about, I'm pretty sure Mercadia is the most stable and wealthy plane that's ever gotten a set.
Sounds like a solid candidate for least awful to me.
If I was a normal, peace-loving human who was searching for a new plane to call home and could somehow planeswalk*, I would go to Lorwyn. Doesn't it only change into Shadowmoor every 300 years? And instead of raging warfare, all you have to watch out for is an occasional Needle Drop? Maybe the boggarts would be like ewoks and treat me like a god. But they'd be more likely to do that if I looked like Proteus Machine. Maybe the kithkin would accept me as a long-lost cousin and I could play for their basketball team. Or, the giants might adopt me like they did Kithkin Greatheart. Gosh, the exciting possibilities are just endless. On the other hand, the elves might think me the worst eyeblight of them all, since I'm from another world and therefore have no place in theirs.
*Have there been any ships with planeswalking engines since the Weatherlight? Or is planeswalking now only done by the Superfriends?
Naya was too and I don't think they sacrificed people to the gargantuans, did they?
Serra's Realm was chill before Phyrexia and Urza completely demolished it.
Cridhe seems nice. There was some beef in the past about some planeswalkers destroying the tree that held all the world's mana but there's a new tree now and everything seems to be okay. The only downside is that if you like to explore the entire plane is only one island... soooo..
Kinshala looks to be alright too. Especially if you're looking for a plane with known settlements that doesn't seem to be in peril.
Have there been any ships with planeswalking engines since the Weatherlight? Or is planeswalking now only done by the Superfriends?
Only planeswalkers can planeswalk, but there are ways to travel to other planes without actually planeswalking. Old Phyrexia had portals to do it (and all of the knowledge of old Phyrexia is presumably somewhere in the Phyrexian Oil, so New Phyrexia may figure it out eventually), the Weatherlight could do it, the eldrazi titans can do it, and Marit Lage can do it.
Orzhov are the ones that screw and don't get screwed (just don't do business with them, people)
It's kinda hard to not do any business with Orzhov. Almost every business on Ravnica is connected to the Orzhov in some way, Orzhov controls the banks, and Vizkopa Bank mints the majority of the money. They also run what's basically the only religion in town, and all the lawyers are part of the guild.
Selesnya and Rakdos have religious aspects. Wouldn't be surprised if others do, in fact would be pretty odd if only Orzhov did. Orzhov doesn't seem like it would satisfy all religious aspects.
Ravnica is clearly modelled after our current world.
Well, it's clearly modeled after Planescape's Sigil. Sigil and Ravnica both of course draw heavily on our Earth, albeit with dystopian elements (especially in Sigil). These fantasy metropolises emphasize the worst aspects of industrial civilization: stifling bureaucracy, political corruption, intense economic inequality, vicious criminality, religious hypocrisy, environmental degradation, and so on.
So starting with Mirrodin and analyzing each plane in its current state we get the following.
Mirrodin: It's New Phyrexia now. Get the hell out of there.
Kamigawa: Presumably peaceful. We haven't been here in over a thousand years though so who knows.
Ravnica: Not a terrible place to live honestly. As long as the Dimir don't muck with your head, the Gruul don't kill you, the Rakdos don't maim you, and the Orzhov don't basically enslave you than you should be fine. Just imagine living in the city in the not so good neighborhoods.
Dominaria: Like Kamigawa, who knows. This plane was massive and full of all sorts of crazy ***** but we saw it recently in Liliana's origin story and it didn't seem to bad.
Lorwyn: It's Shadowmoor now. Get the hell out of there.
Alara: I'm sure there are still plenty of nice places to live peacefully if you're lucky but most of the plane is at war right now so this probably isn't where you want to be.
Zendikar: With the Eldrazi gone the roil should also be gone which might make this the most peaceful plane around. Mostly empty and destroyed but peaceful all the same.
Innistrad: No. Just, no.
Theros: Just don't piss of any of the gods and you'll be fine. Lots of fine civilized people.
Tarkir: Dragon clans mostly ignore each other. Dromoka and Ojutai are the only safe clans though. Just remember that as a non dragon you are a second class citizen. Though the Dromoka are way more chill about this.
So all things considered Zendikar is probably the safest plane around right now.
Unfortunately every try hard from Sacramento to Shanghai preaches from the top of their 27 lands + Mana Reflection that Tooth and Nail and Time Stretch are fine to play in the same turn but Armageddon is unfair.

Couple corrections.
Dominaria: Lilian's Origin Story should be pretty long ago. A definite more recent example was the Prodigal Sorcerer story.
Lorwyn: It's not Shadowmoor, it's a combo of both.
Tarkir: Ojutai seems pretty chill about humans too.

I have never heard of either Cridhe, Kinshala or Fabacin. Where can I read more about them?
Kinshala and Fabacin are only on the plane cards Tember City and Grove of the Dreampods (and possibly Dreampod Druid. Cridhe was the setting of the magic novel, The Cursed Land, if you're able to find it.

Shandalar seems like a relatively safe place to live; only real bad parts are Garrukk wandering around in M15, and the slivers. Its just your typical high fantasy land.
Theros is definitely not a safe place to live; with Thassa losing her bident to Kiora, the sea goddess must be taking her anger out on the mortals of the plain. Only if you live with the Leonin will you be safe; everywhere else you are just a play thing to a god. Also, when you die, you are guaranteed coming back as a zombie.
Isn't Emrakul on the moon now, playing golf against herself and twiddling her tentacles? And aren't all the bloodsuckers, shamblers, moon-puppies and bible-thumpers standing united? Sounds like it's the best time to be on Innistrad.

If you're a human on Innistrad, you are a food source.

For Lorwyn I mean literally a combination of both. The Aurora was destroyed in the book and the weird system of day/night was ended, resulting in a more normal plane. Though I'm surprised you wouldn't want to be on Lorwyn itself, at least before the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block.
And I wasn't saying you weren't second class so much as saying that it didn't seem as bad as the others.

Speaking of which, if the Aurora doesn't happen anymore, what has become of the swapping effect it had on the species of the plane? Is it simply one variety or the other for each species or do the malevolent and benign varieties both exist?
