Does anyone play with cards they don't own? Like just use a common to represent other cards you don't own? Some cards can get pretty expensive and I was thinking this would be a way to play the cards you want without breaking the bank. Of coarse this would only be for casual play.
I'm gonna ask the friends I play with if they want to do this.
In response to the OP. I do that all the time in casual.. and also when playtesting if a certain card would be ok in the deck - saves money that way, because if the card proves to be not useful in testing, then I don't have to buy it anymore.
a lot of the times people just proxy cards they don't own to see how they play out in decks. Especially with cards from new sets that aren't out yet to make new brews
I usually proxy expensive cards as I am kind of paranoid of getting mugged/robbed for my cards as I have expensive stuff in my decks plus I already have copies of some expensive cards. Examples of this are like OG duals and Mana Crypt. I have both printings of Crypt but more than 2 edh decks and I am not gonna spend another 180 bucks for 2+ more. I generally only proxy cards I already own but don't have a ton of multiples of. Everyone in my playgroups don't care that I proxy the big stuff. I only ave like one deck with proxies of cards I don't own because I am still working out the kinks and when its closer to being ironed out I will pick up real versions of the proxied cards.
People proxy all the time. There are a bunch of different methods:
The off-card, where you have a card that doesn't belong with the understanding that it is a proxy.
The marked card, where you write what the card is on top of another.
The card-alt, where you make your own version of a proxy card (these look the coolest, but take the longest).
The print out, where you literally print off a card's face, and carefully paste it to another card.
The insert, where you put a slip of paper which tells you what the card is into the card's sleeve on top of another card.
A lot of people like to have cubes with Power Nine cards in them, but most people don't want to shell out the tens of thousands of dollars, or just don't want to shuffle the cards, so cards like that are very often proxies. They even allow limited proxies at a lot of sanctioned Vintage tournaments, because once again, most people can't afford a Mox Jet. Most of the methods I mentioned are tournament legal, though, so keep that in mind.

And although I don't do it, I don't mind when people do.
