That's pretty rough. We had 293 players in San Diego, CA. Top 16 got $100 while top 32 got $50.

While 50$ isn't that much cash, let's do a bit of math.
Top 8 gets some amount of money, 9-16 get 100 bucks, 17-32 get 50$, that's already 1600$ outside top 8. As I don't have info on the tournament fees, I can state that 600 player room can easily cost 5-12k$ in rent, and most likely top 8 gets 3.2k$ in prices, if the prize structure is even. Judges, scorekeepers and other people who make the tournament tick also need to be paid, so that's additional 5k$.
So considering it's regionals, I think that while the pay-out vpropably could be better, it's still reasonable considering that regionals are supposed to be a step below GP. It sucks that some regionals are 600+ players wehn others are 100+, but them's the breaks.

Considering that I had to pay a $40 entry fee and $15 to park my car... the fact that I technically lost money after grinding out 10 full rounds of play feels like a slap in the face. StarCity should either up the prizes, give out more SCG points, or do something when certain quotas are hit.
You came in 20th. Magic doesn't pay out much after the top 16.
If you got $50 for a T16 finish, that's one thing, but usually only the T16 are considered to have "placed" at an event: many events don't post the decklists of non-T16 players.

These days, some wizards are finding they have a little too much deck left at the end of their $$$.

Wow, I think back to a Top 16 finish at a local PTQ and I got $50 for doing that, even though there were only 120 or so players. That sucks to grind so hard and get so little.
Yeah well, I got 33rd at my Regionals due to tie breakers and missed out on the $50 because many of my opponents dropped right after they lost. I got to be that guy. The store threw me a couple pity packs due to my sorrow.
Also, the prizes are fixed no matter the attendance. If you only had 100 people show up, the prizes would have been the same.
Kids these days and your SCG regionals and your cash prizes and your baggy pants. I got 26th place at the biggest WotC Regionals (somewhere over 500 people) back before they changed that whole tournament structure. I don't remember the exact prizes, but it was all in booster packs and I'm pretty sure it was either 6 or 8 packs.

SCG Opens used to pay to top 16 only in the beginning. Guess who was 17th place?
