Too many. I have a couple boxes full of ones I don't care about, as well as a box full of basics with art I like and foil basics.
I'm also sitting on about 500 extra BFZ full arts and counting right now. That's not counting all the BFZ full arts I'm using in all my decks now (I was taking a break from mtg the last time they printed full arts. I had no intention of missing out on them this time around!).
I would say I have at least 20,000 basics. I have three 5,000 count boxes full as well as 250+ decks constructed that average 24 lands apiece. Add to that lands in sets and lands used as dividers, I'm actually probably close to 25,000. And I still need more (it's complicated)... I also have three or four 5,000 count boxes filled with brand new Dragon Shields and KMC sleeves of varying color and texture. Because, why buy things when you need them when you can buy them well before you need them?
That's an impressive stack, alright. Though if I had to roughly estimate the number of basics I own myself, then it would easily exceed 2.000. More than double of what you have in the picture (which I estimate to be around 1.000). And that's even after I donated several hundreds to new players, that were still lacking the lands to build their decks. I also have like 500 more in a binder (my basic land art collection). Playing the game for 1 1/2 decades sure leaves one with a lot of cardboard.
I own a 1-of each illustration basic land from invasion block to ravnica and up to BFZ. Including a couple of Unhinged basics and a foil set from there, and the artifact lands from Mirrodin block (Back in 2003 those were your basics, pretty much). I'm working on the rest of the sets, the newer ones (From Time spiral to Khans) have been coming along steadily, but man, is it hard to find M/NM basics that are old enough to drive.
My "land bunch" is probably half as tall as yours, mostly from mirrodin era when I bought fat packs instead of regular boosters.
I may not have the largest quantity, but I can say with good confidence 956. I have my full MTG collection logged in an excel sheet. I could give a breakdown by basic type, snow covered, full art(a pathetic few as I refuse to pay a premium for an already pricey product such as fatpacks) etc...
It's funny though. Even with this quantity of lands and with a fairly even distribution of types, I still find myself lacking basic forests at times. I have too many EDH decks I think.
Judging from my collection in excel sheet: 1082.
Despite this number, I still struggle to find any when building new decks.

I have way too many Islands and Forests and no where near enough mountains... I'd guess I own just under 100 of each basic, but I have a LOT of casual decks so most of them are used.
I want to say I have around 500 regular basics with something like 300 full arts. I donate a lot of the regular to new players and hoard the full art ones.
I have been playing since 2000, and I think I have maybe 300 regular border basics (not counting the foil ones from "grave pact" and "fire and lightning"- those can hopefully be traded). Long ago I realized that it was utterly pointless to keep basics, especially since a lot of them are just not to my liking. I have like 8 each of the Zen full arts, and 5 each from BFZ, and in most of my decks I use these. I keep some Avon basics, and a couple others just in case, but I either throw away my extras or I give a bunch away when I am giving away other bulk I have no use for.
In the formats I play (commander and modern) decks do not run very many basics, so why horde junk?
I have propably around 40 000 or bit more. I estimated the amount, as I haven't weighed the boxes (notice the plural, 4 boxes currently). theres about 25+ kilos of lands. The boxes have bulk lands from 4th edition forwards, and I also have two full 3-row binders of lands I like to use, starting from alpha and having at least one of each promo or alternative art land there are. This includes MPS lands, Portal 1 alternate art lands, GURU lands, judge basics, etc.
I used to TO for a few years, running some conventions, where I had to provide lands, so I kept all the basics I got from buying collections and later while WotC was providing free lands to stores I didn't have a chance to sell them even after I stopped TO:ing as the price was very low.
Currently I have given some away to a local youth organization, but most are still stored in large cardboard boxes. waiting for me to get rid of some, but I will keep maybe 10k of them, so I can restart running events at some point in the future if I end up living in an area without games store. I even have 500+ basic lands in my office at work, so I can always tune a decks manabase with basics, if I need and have draft lands if I need them.
None.
Well, the ones that I'm using in decks - so about 100?
My LGS gives away basic lands for anyone to use, so I just leave all my basics there for them to use.
The rest of the local community does the same thing. Works out really well.
I'm always looking for acquiring more basic lands but I found the prices on-line to be pretty steep. If any one here wants to sell them or give them away, I will gladly take them off your hands so you can PM if you are interested.

I am hoarding about 700 basics, about 100 Non-basics, 7 Foils and 5 Full-Arts. I haven't really bought anything from BFZ yet, so I don't have many. I have about 1700 non-land cards though.... I plan on getting more of my friends into Magic, so I can get rid of a bunch of them.

Yeah, that stack is all basics. How many basics do you have?

I don't buy packs, I sell off prize packs (or give away/trade), and only pick up basics from my buddies as I build decks.
