Force of will is a great card and all. But how does it make sense, flavor wise? It is countering, yes. But It reads as a red card by "force" and also the art depicts a flaming barbarian. Am I missing something?
Maybe a small issue, but the art is great. I just feel like it mis-represents the color of blue.
Why do you think this card is named what it is, and why the particular art?
note: the art in the tag in this post is NOT the art I am referring to.
The name makes perfect sense flavour-wise. You are using your will (your inner mental strength) to force the opposing spell to stop happening. That is a very blue thing.
As for the artwork, I have no idea what's going on there. I don't see anything being stopped (countered), just a barbarian with fire all around him (maybe he's a blue barbarian and is stopping that fire?). The new judge promo artwork makes much more sense (she is using the force of her will to stop the incoming flame).
For the record, I like the old art in abstract, Terese Nielson does great work, but it just doesn't seem to work for the card itself.
iirc the art was meant to be a red card and they used it for Force of Will later on in the process.
As to color pie, no. Force of Will is a fantastic example of blue color pie as it is in fact a counterspell. The phrase "force of will" has very little to do with Red's notion of "force".
Back in those days, the art direction and descriptions tended to be a bit looser... and they came over by fax. (For you young people, faxes came right after pony express in the timeline of things). I wish I still had the original art description, but as far as I can remember, here's all it said:
Red card
Depict a Shaman using fire or red magic
Working title: "Stop Spell"
... [Further writing about modeling for it, as Wolverine, herself.]
It sounds like the art was repurposed. The title and function work together, just the art ends up kind of wonky with it.

I agree. Another example of great Terese Nielsen art on totally the wrong card is her Swords To Plowshares. Just doesn't really fit - seems way too "entering into battle".
Imagine how different Legacy would look today if Force of Will was red instead of blue.
As for the art, it's kind of nonsensensical, but nowhere near as bad as Ebon Praetor or Misdirection from Mercadian Masques, neither of which make any sense.

As to the few of you who are backing blues notion of force, I am not sure I agree, but I appreciate the opinions.
8 white cards have force in their name
10 blue cards have force in their name
8 black cards have force in their name
9 red cards have force in their name
17 green cards have force in their name
2 multi colored cards have force in their name
4 artifacts have force in their name
Looks like force belongs to blue more than red.
edit: I give up on trying to link to the gatherer search
10 red cards is what I pulled up. I think that this is a poor representation of the Color Wheel, that I was referring to. Blue desires knowledge, and relies on wit. Red relies on passion, and raw power. I just dont think this cards effect is indicitive of the title, much like the art has little-no relation to the color.
Your argument is bringing words like "Enforcer" as an implied relation to my point. Thanks for bothering to look it up, but its not just the word, its the culmination of everything with this card that I just dont get.
The art was made for a red card, but I think you are letting that jade your perception on everything else about the card. The word force does not belong to emotions which is red. Raw power, I believe that no color would hold any claim over. Maybe green as it just wants things in the "natural" state as they come. Red is more emotional and living in the now while blue is more calculating.
Every color can force you to do things via its tools. Blue forces others to do what they want through mind control.
I think one of the multi colored cards was part red so this is what came up in your numbers. I was considering looking through the different "enforcer" type words. First it was more work. Second I think a larger amount of red cards used such words than blue. So I would think that it could slant things even further from red (and artifacts).
It's a blue counterspell that still operates when you are completely out of normal countermagic, depleted of all your resources (mana) and yet you absolutely must FIND A WAY TO STOP THAT SPELL THROUGH SHEER..."FORCE OF WILL".
The expression "Force of Will" is actually a real-world term that always refers to one's MENTAL strength, determination, and really not any sort of physical strength. That's 100% blue.
It is utterly perfect flavor for the color blue and the card's effect. And it ABSOLUTELY feels blue to play it against someone.

I know what a fax machine is. That's when you 3D print the phone and printer emoji, right? 📠
But it's funny because the card name sounds black, the art is obviously red, and the ability is blue. Talk about an identity crisis.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
I always thought the art made sense, the barbarian is using his willpower to resist the burning of the flames. It's a mind over matter type of thing which is very blue.
Maybe a small issue, but the art is great. I just feel like it mis-represents the color of blue.

The guy uses blue magic to create fire!
UTeferi, Temporal ArchmageU's prison: blue is the new orange is the new black.
Mizzix Of The Izmagnus : wheels on fire... rolling down the road...
BSidisi, Undead VizierB: Bis zum Erbrechen
GTitiania, Protector Of ArgothG: Protecting Argoth, by blowing it up!
GYisan, The Wanderer BardG: Gradus Ad Elfball.
Duel EDH: Yisan & Titania.
In Progress: Grand Arbiter Augustin IV duel; Grenzo, Dungeon Warden Doomsday.

(Also, I always assumed the guy was burn-scarring himself to prove his mental fortitude. A la Paul Atreides in Dune vs. that black box.)
