Recently I have been wanting to start playing Magic again. The thing that's holding me back is the social aspect (I know there's a similar thread that started recently; I didn't want to hijack that one). I stopped playing around Zendikar block (the first one. God I feel old lol), mostly in favor of euro-style board games. There were a lot of groups for that in my area and it became cheaper too since everyone brought their favorites. I sold all my cards when I stopped playing. Anywho, I since moved to an area where the game groups are...lacking, to put it nicely. I used to game almost nightly, now it's once a week nearby, with others around 40-50 miles away. So Magic seems to be a good supplement IMO. And herein comes my hesitance: as a returning player I feel that I have to perform well. I also hate talking to anyone. I have no more cards so trades are out of the question. Finally, most players are kids, and I'm looking for people my age (30).
I mean, I want to go, but I don't, if that makes any sense. I'm also broke as hell. I feel pulled in opposite directions.

The fact that you "hate talking to people" sounds like it might not be wise for you to start again. No one likes to turn away new players, but I have to admit that the social aspect is a huge draw, and without it you won't have nearly as much fun (in many people's experiences). Being "broke as hell" sounds like the nail in the coffin, especially given that some gaming groups are very heavily limited oriented.
Sorry I didn't have anything more encouraging to say...
"Hate talking to anyone" is a little harsh; I just have A LOT of trouble talking to new people. Though the financial concerns are valid. I can afford a draft or sealed here and there, but constructed? With $400 standard decks that change every couple weeks? That I can't afford.

Would find a different game. This is not a game for people new to it that don't have much money. Either you're new and can pay to play, heavily experienced so you can make a serious budget attempt, or preferably both. Or just draft, the social aspect of this game is immensely exaggerated, I've gone entire tournaments where the men don't say anything outside of announcing their actions, sometimes you can really notice how quiet it is in the store when tabletop groups aren't around.

Probably better to play modern then. Yoiu build one deck and you can play it for a long time. Just grab a card every now and then until it's complete.
Not talking isn't an issue for most 1-vs-1 games. A lot of Magic players have either no social skills, or are so introverted that announcing their actions is about all they can manage conversationally. There are folks on the other end, of course, but my meta seems like 65-80% quiet types.
On the other hand, Magic is at an extremely expensive phase just now. I'd suggest drafting, or if you don't mind aggro, build some cheapie mono red Standard deck.
Honestly bro it's tough, believe me it's tough, but you gotta get out of your comfort zone sometimes. Personality trumps looks 99% of the time and it never hurts to have money! Especially if you earnt if off a magic pro tour event

Every location is different, but in my city (Cincinnati/Dayton) the shop I go to has quite a few people in their 30's and even 40's on modern nights (tuesday and friday).
I think the main thing is that being broke and playing Magic don't go together very well. That's what stuck out like a sore thumb to me.

Hey there. I'm not sure if you were referring to my thread when you said "I know there's a similar thread that started recently," but I talked about a solution that our group found. We started a mini league where each of us would make a deck from a set number of boosters (in this case 12 boosters each). We'd play each other whenever we get a chance to meet up. As we all work 70+ hours per week, it's hard to find a time when we all have a night off. But when we do, we have a blast! And we don't have to worry about the rising cost of real Magic at the stores. We still haven't decided whether we should add boosters - and if, so at what intervals.
The point is to find a group that doesn't take the game that seriously. You can have a lot of fun and make awesome friends. Even if one of the friends is a more serious player with the best decks, if he/she would be willing to put said decks aside and play in the mini league, then everyone wins! And it's not prohibitively expensive.
This has just been an attempt to get more social interaction in my life. I just felt it was easy to go back to a hobby I've had in the past, just not in this area. Guess I can give up on that goal.:crying:
As for finding groups, there really is only 1 game store in my city, and that's where everyone else plays. Don't know where another group could be found.
