You paid $75 for the registration fee and get your playmat/promo/packs. You crack them, knowing full well you have to ship the pool after logging the pulls, and see a Tarmogoyf. Do you drop from the event?
I can see both sides. You are "cash-flow positive" so to speak, so dropping is the smartest move. On the other hand, maybe you didn't take days off work and fly in for the weekend just to play in side-events. Is there anybody who wouldn't take the Tarmogoyf? Do you weigh your own skill and odds of making day two as part of the decision?
If the event is big or important one (nationals as stated), I will continue to play. For smaller events, I will play only if most of my friends are continuing, otherwise I'll haste away with my Goyf.

I'd snap-drop on the spot. Yes, there will probably be some complaints if it's a smaller event, but at the end of the day, a Goyf is guaranteed value, whereas a random pool and potential prizes aren't as likely to add up to that sum. If it was a GP, as the title mentions, then I'd just drop and do side events with my now-free time. Main events aren't so important to me that I'd rather "pay" a Tarmogoyf just for an uncertain shot at day 2.
I'm confident enough in my abilities as a player that I'd play it out. You can always get another Tarmogoyf (albeit at a hefty price), but the opportunity to play at a GP is much rarer and much more valuable (I'd be paying over $500 for the plane ticket alone), and I'd love the experience of playing in a major event. Plus, while I don't believe that I'm a godlike pro or anything, I think that there's a chance I could day 2, which would be even better.

I suppose it depends on where you live (and how far you're willing to travel), but around here (NYC area) there's more than enough GPs that not playing in one doesn't feel like a huge missed opportunity.

I live in Oregon, and GP's don't happen often on the west coast.
IN order to not drop you need some combination of a very high opinion of your own playskill/pool and enough financial security to value small shots at fame/achievement over $150. I'd drop, but I could easily imagine being in a position five years from now where I wouldn't.
Related question: You're in day 2 of the GP, but with the worst qualifying record (so no shot at top 8). You open goyf, foil goyf P1P1. Do you drop?

I primarily play limited, so most of my spoiler season comments view cards through that lens.
Related question: You're in day 2 of the GP, but with the worst qualifying record (so no shot at top 8). You open goyf, foil goyf P1P1. Do you drop?
No because you get the keep the cards you draft.
edit: sorry, misread the double goyf part. In this case I'd take the foil, watch my neighbour's face when I pass it on and keep playing.
In limited you open 6 boosters, register the cards and pass them on to someone else. You can drop before passing it on though keeping those 6 boosters for yourself.
I'd definately drop and go play modern or draft side events (1.5 hour drive with company car to Utrecht for me).
@Sliver Lord: Pretty sure you take your foil goyf and keep playing.
@OP: I am going to GP Vegas and I will drop if I open a goyf. Last GP Vegas, I opened Bob, Woodfall PrimusFoil, Glen Elendra ArchmageFoil, Ravager, Doubling Season, Cryptic and insta-dropped... The guy across from me opened Clique and foil Cryptic and insta-dropped too... I have a feeling I won't be that lucky this time...
I will drop if my pool exceeds $100 in value. For me the reason is multifold. For one, my journey expenses to the GP equate a grand total of 0, given that it's just a short bicycle ride away. Two: I'm not a good enough player to threaten the top spots anyway, so the chances of me making up that value in prices is nihil. Three: I could swap that value for stuff I have much more use for.
So yeah. A pricey pool is a snap drop for me. I'd imagine the longer you traveled, the lower your desire to drop.

If I paid a three digit sum for a plane ticket and a hotel room, plus the $75 for entry into the MM2 GP, then no, I wouldn't drop no matter what I opened - even a foil tarmogoyf won't cover the outlay. In truth, I'd be best off not even going at all and just pocketing the savings.
Depends on a few factors:
-Confidence in your magic play. GP Las Vegas will likely host more than 3,600 players...meaning that top 230 cash out (at least $200).
-Desire to participate in a GP. Some people just don't live within driving distance (say 8 hours) of a GP. Dropping $400+ on a plane ticket and then hotel stay can quickly add up.
-Your personal feelings on "value" in a limited tournament.
-Why you ultimately went to the GP. I would venture that almost every person registers for a GP to actually participate in it.
For anyone who didn't fly in for the GP; the urge to "profit" is more of a pull than someone who took 4 days off and flew in to play the event.
Personally, if a Tarmogoyf is involved I am dropping from the event. Its 1 card that is worth $150-200, its a multi-format staple in its color and its trade-ability is about as high as a card can have.
If I open Noble Hierarch, White Leyline and Bitterblossom? I would pass on that to stay in the GP.
I'd drop easy decision for me. In fact even when I pass the card pool and get mine unless it's an amazing card pool i'm dropping. It's vegas baby. When your out of gambling money then you just come back and play cube or side drafts. They will be drafting mm2 for 25-30 bucks all day.
If I'm flying to the GP, no. I've already sunk enough into going to the tournament that I'm for sure going to play. If I lived closer as someone you who are just making an hour or less trip then I would drop and play side events all day.

I'm going there to play. Even if I open two goyfs I'll ship the pool. I'm flying out from halfway across the country, I didn't do that to play in side events.

This isn't possible. The stamping process used for Professional REL actually removes the foils from the packs and replaces them with commons. You will not see foils in a GP Day 2 draft.
I take the Goyf & say nothing.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
I'm glad that I've got the byes and sleep-in special for this not to be an issue (since I don't need to register a pool and a judge can't drop while registering a money pool), but even if I were in the event from round one, I wouldn't drop.
Limited GPs are among the most fun MTG to be had. The competition and associated pressure are something that I wouldn't give up for a meager cash payout (to make it even easier, my EV is above the cost of a goyf anyway )
That's all before we even consider that GPs are the simplest and easiest way to land another spot on the tour.
Just got to say, you've definitely earned distinction as an MTGS hero

I paid over $300 for hotel, gas, and registration for MM2015 in Las Vegas. Still, I would snap quit and play side events. I will already be playing side events each other day and I enjoy Modern and Legacy way more than Limited anyway.
This may seem embarrassing, but I nearly quit last Modern Masters over a FOIL Gifts Ungiven. It was only worth $25 at the time, but I seriously am not used to opening that kind of value. I guess part of this is because I never crack packs and rarely play Limited, although I did play MM Drafts at my LGS whenever I could and did open some value in Kiki Jiki, Vedalken Shackles, Arcbound Ravager, and Engineered Explosives in 4 drafts. When I opened Kiki Jiki, I almost crapped my pants, more for the play value in Draft than the $.

At that point is take my $200 pool and drop and do drafts etc. the promo card and play mat giving me $250 for my $75 investment. If it's farm and cryptic command then heck yeah I'd drop.

We are talking about Day 1. Sealed Deck portion.
I have been having this conversation. You have to be kind of lucky to make enough on a pool that it is worth dropping. You need 2 or 3 Specific Rares or Mythics. If you don't get Goyf because it alone is probably worth it. I would probably drop and go draft or something. Flipping that card to a dealer would probably keep me in drafts all weekend.
You have to get really lucky in draft. Foil Rare that is one of those top tier cards in addition to your Rare being one too.
