Is there, at this point, any way to become certified as a level 1 judge without a level 2 judge to perform the test / interview procedure?
We no longer have a level 2 judge in my area, and the level 1 judge that ran a shop sold everything, closed his shop, and washed his hands of magic. Another competing store is now requesting that I judge there events, offering me 1 pack/head for Paid FNMs, and up to a playset of FNM Promos if any are left at the end of the month. They are also offering more compensation for saturday events, preleases, and PPTQs, GPTs, SCG IQs, and States Events.
However they requested that I become Level 1 qualified, and then eventually level 2 so that they can use me as Head Judge for events that require it. The thing is they are having to bring judges from out of town to do events that require Sanctioned Judges, and they out of towners are bending them over, Demanding 2 boxes of current in-print product. Some of them are demanding foreign language boxes as well. I think this is outrageous for smaller events.
Sounds like youre in an area of scummy judges. I know the pain, you will probably have to travel to get certified. Same reason I never made the jump. Its dumb as hell that you need a level 2 when the coverage of level 2s is abysmal.
There are several level 2s about 2 hours south of here, In fact my wife used to date one of them, and no doubt she could get him to certify me, if we lived 2 hours south of here and I was willing to to join the racket they have going on demanding 2 boxes of of KTK, preferably in Russian or Korean, with free entry into the event, and other compensation depending on length/players in the event.
Probably going to have to drive 3-4 hours north to find a good judge to certify me.
Just know you dont need to be a judge to "judge" an event.
You can simply be the rules guy in any FNM / event in a store, if no judge is present, then "you" are the judge, even at level 0, as is the event organizer (which in that case would be you).
Being level 1 is nice ofcourse, but if all there is the qualification you might allready have, then nothing stops you from "judging" an event if its in everyones best interest that someone does, level 1 or not.
As soon as you can, get certified, but you really dont need to rush it just to be level 1 for no other reason than "being level 1".
If it required its clearly different, but if the store really NEEDS a level 2, they might even support you further to get certified.
