I happened upon photos of it while looking through registration information:
I find good playmats for large events to be pretty important. It's a piece of advertising and it's an awesome way to show others what you have been up to in the Magic scene. Now, I'll be the first to say that you should never judge the quality of a GP by its playmat, but look at this pile of garbage!
It could be a placeholder, I hope, but it looks like very bad photoshop...like CF waited until the last minute and then put something together out of panic. Thoughts?
It looks like they are serious about it. Kinda hoping that they just didn't want to leak a card yet and refrained from announcing a playmat, kinda like SCG is doing with GP Charlotte, but that seems to not be the case.

One of these day I have to get myself organizized.
Wait, that's the actual playmat and not a placeholder image?
The new art for the Etched Champion is fine (whether it's better or worse than the original is a matter of taste and besides the point IMO), but the sheer number and size of the logos completely ruins it. Why not have a plain, single color mat with logos, since the logos are obviously the centerpiece here?
It took me awhile to realize that it was even the new Etched Champion artwork... it's so boring. The amount of self-promotion is kind of sad - I mean, SCG had barely any for GPNJ last year - like, the brainstorm playmat has GPNJ in the top left, ultra pro in the top right, and the SCG icon in the bottom left, and it's transparent so it doesn't really even hide anything. I'm not sure why the playmat needs 1/6th of it covered with the vegas sign that is in every vegas picture ever taken.
If I was going to this event, I'd be half tempted to get a shirt that said "I just spent $500 for GPLV and all I got to show for it was this stupid playmat."
That playmat goes for all 3 GP's, each one having a different photo in the bottom corner. Chiba has a beach photo, and Utrecht has one of the Dom Tower, its most famous building. It looks odd, but I've warmed up to it.

Every Modern Masters 2015 side event has a playmat for the player. These playmats are going to be different and will be released on April 22 according to CF's twitter.
My guess is that the event playmat was Wizard's design and we'll get a much better one from CF for doing side events.
The playmat for side events is the new Vendilion Clique artwork. You can also trade your Etched Champion mat for a Clique one if you want (while supplies last, if you keep the mat in good condition).

Compare it to, well, everything else.

That's unfortunate. Maybe I can find a way to make it more interesting by getting as many recognizable signatures on it as possible...

Much better than the Etched Champion mat.
