I saw a lot of people bashing the newly spoiled lightning berserker online, and it got me thinking - has there ever been a creature with firebreathing that was actually really good? A staple in any constructed format?
You'd think that such an iconic and flavorful mechanic that's been around since alpha would get pushed more often.
The only one I can even remember playing recently is Inferno Titan - is he the best firebreathing creature?
Firebreathing has never been amazing, but it is often under-rated. Directly converting mana into damage to the dome or to have a creature trade-up in combat is never a bad thing.
Firebreath is most the time similiar to trample, just "extra" and it doesnt matter most of the time (much more so in limited where creature combat actual exists, constructed is more defined by its quality removal).
Firebreath cards are rarely unplayable, most of them are fairly good if you have enough red mana, similiar to blacks shades, which are also much more a thing for limited.
The good thing about that abilities is that they become good in the late game as mana sinks. Everyone will at some point flood out and get in a stall. The one with manasinks (abilities that need mana and can be used multiple times) will have an advantage.
Early on you really dont want to use the mana abilities if you can avoid it, but later, pumping a creature for +7 or more is a huge deal, makes a tiny creature into a must-block, especially with evasion its even better , it just sucks if you have to trade your 1/1 firebreath with just another 1/1 , you really want to trade up for something bigger.
So similiar to trample and vigilance , its the kind of ability they often throw in for creature in the fitting color (being green, white, red) , nice to have, but rarely important.
