I quit Magic recently, because all my friends moved on from it, it is a highly social game and as such I do not see myself playing it without my friends.
Sadly, I spent 10x as much money as they did lol so it burns a little, but oh well, all my cards are still high value.
So I'll quit until they are into it again, maybe the next set or block...
Would you quit in this situation? I literally have no 'friends' at FNM, only people I recognize...
If SCG were to drop legacy (entirely).
Wotc doesn't support it enough and local legacy has been on the decline, if the last large legacy events in the US were to dry up I'd probably quit the game. I already dropped standard, barely touch modern, and draft sparingly.
I might keep a cube or two together, but I certainly wouldn't have a reason to play sanctioned magic.
I suppose I would quit when noone within reasonable travel distance will play or learn the game. When my high school group dissolved for the most part, I still built decks & brought new people into the game. When I started hanging out with a local anime group, I brought new people into the game. I've yet to run into a period when I can't find people who play or are willing to learn.
I quit when someone stole my binder. Either a former friend or roommate. This was around innistrad block and I was stocking up on zendikar fetches and foil snap casters. Unfortunate really, but I can't seem to stay away from the game for long.

There is no reason being friendly and being competitive can't be synonymous.
I stopped with paper around Odyssey block. And MTGO for free is totally clumsy, clicking cards for every action is clumsy and the programs that do have rules enforcement aren't great.
Depending on the competitive level that you want to play at, some decks cost the same as a computer. Huh.
If your friends taking off prompted you to quit, then I would get to know more people at your shop. The main shop I go to, I know about 40 different people by name. That particular shop is quite large, and has a lot of people in attendance daily, so I suppose that makes it easy. I just wouldn't limit yourself to your close friend circle in terms of magic, branch out or try a different shop, there is three in my immediate area. In short, if lack of friends is the problem, it is an easily fixed problem.
To answer the question though, I'd probably quit if my collection was taken. It has taken awhile to build it up, and I just don't have the funds to rebuild it. That would prompt me to quit magic, unless of course I won the lottery.
I currently live in North Carolina and play Modern every saturday. I would "quit" Magic if when I move back to California none of the LGS support Modern. I'm heavily invested in the format, and have quit playing Standard and have little to no interest in Limited or Legacy. I have EDH decks, but they're mostly for fun matches before the Modern event happens. I would probably never "quit" MTG and keep the cards until an LGS supports Modern. I'm also not a very fond of the idea of mtgo due to having to rebuild my Modern collection.

I have no friends. I have to drive 30 miles to play mtg. Im broke half the time when it comes to having money for cards to use in decks. But even then i will gladly play with total strangers each week because i love the mtg commu ity.
I'll quit when I stop having fun. That's it for me. I don't want to ever dread doing something for sake of the social aspect. I do things because I enjoy them or I have to. I want to play Magic because it's fun.

I've done it before and it's the only way I can see myself quitting again is if everyone around here quit. Everyone around here quit a few years ago but right now it's the strongest it's been in years
if the game ever gets too expensive, I can always just play at a casual level since that's all our Friday nights are here anyways
I quit at the introduction of Khans after seeing how terrible the metagame was shaping up. Sold off all my valuable cards, made some good money, focused on other hobbies. One of my new friends used to play magic and after educating him on the toxic standard environment he got the itch to return to tournament play......fast forward a couple weeks he's placing consistently with a Jeskai Aggro deck. And I dont mean top 8's which is pathetic at FNM everytime he was getting top 3. I'm teaching him fundamentals, lines of play, and how decks operate using my commons and im about 8-5-0 against him with my $10 mono-white heroic deck.
after my two month hiatus I returned to tournament play, shocked the store with 3rd place against a line of tournament perennials. So at this point I think I just need to face a few unpleasant magic players to quit for good. The standard environment sucks, Modern and Legacy are outrageously expensive to head into from scratch if you want to win, and a couple unpleasant players ruins the game.
Even if WotC bankrupts, I don't think I'll quit completely unless someone says that MTG cards can cause cancer or something.
Even if they caused cancer, I would probably accept it and continue to play Magic. I may choose a specific amount of time to play it, so I maximize my fun, but it wouldn't stop me completely. There's people who have hobbies like smoking, etc., etc. and they are more than willing to accept their fates later on.

I feel you. I actually have not enjoyed Standard for quite a while. The last time I was close to enjoying Standard was playing UW Delver. However, I mostly just enjoyed winning and using the winnings to buy Legacy staples. The deck in itself was not particularly stimulating...
I have played Modern ever since we've had 30 players consistently at my LGS (although it has bottomed out occasionally to 16 players rarely). A Standard player recently asked me how come I don't play Standard anymore. I just tell him that I have not liked it for a while. I absolutely HATE Midrange. Combo is my favorite archetype and Control is my 2nd favorite. I wouldn't mind Midrange so much if I could play a Control deck that smashes it. I wouldn't mind facing Abzan Midrange, Sultai Midrange, Mardu Midrange, and some Green Devotion/Monsters Midrange if there was some Esper or better yet, UB deck that crushed them. I don't enjoy playing Midrange either. I have avoided playing it most of my Magic career except when interesting lists by Andrea Mengucci or Jundmaster Willy Edel have interested me enough to try it a week or so. (I have played them in Standard like GR Devotion, which had a Combo type of game plan, and Kibler's GR Thundermaw deck before.) I even like playing Aggro better than Midrange.
And when I say, I feel you, I also mean with the prices for Modern and Legacy. I know many good Standard players that would try the other formats and occasionally DO suboptimally try it, but it just is too expensive to get in. During Zendikar Standard, I bought fetches for $10 each and FOIL fetches for $25 each. This was a hell of a lot of money, but the prices now are just astronomical. I have learned to hold on to staples that are good in Eternal formats, but for a recent player, they just can't afford to pay $500 to $1000 for a deck that may be good only until Treasure Cruise is printed. I would honestly own maybe 2 Modern decks only if I didn't have my cards from 9 years ago to the present.

I played quite a bit in St. Louis and then moved out west and the Legacy scene out here is atrocious. I toyed with the idea of selling my cards a few times, but I kept them and over time have made more friends and have been able to start playing again. I wouldn't get rid of them because I don't know people, I would just take a break. (:
As far as quitting, I don't think I'll ever quit but I could easily sell down to 1 Vintage/Legacy/Modern deck in order to put a downpayment on a house or purchase a car outright if the need called for it... or if my wife needed it to be so haha.

The same thing that made we quit last time (2000-1 ish), no one to play with. As long as I have people to engage with for an activity I enjoy I will keep doing it. If I lose that group I tend to just quit.

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.
I'm not really sure what would make me quit at this point. I have the cards to play most vintage decks without proxies. I have the cards for a lot of major legacy decks. I have some EDH decks and I could build modern if needed. Eternal formats are most appealing to me since I don't have to buy in over and over again. I did buy into vintage online though.
I feel like the game might just slowly fade out of my life. I used to play legacy every Saturday but things with work and relationships change and I just don't have the time to be there every Saturday in the afternoon. I've played at Eternal Weekend and GPNJ, but besides that, I'm made it to few sanctioned events. I play here and there with two plays groups but it's hard to always be available after work and no be tired.
I imagine I will just grow more casual over time truthfully. Eventually, I could see myself selling my cards if it went down that road.

I put down magic cause when I went t school I need to put everything a side(mostly magic) so I can get through it and graduate and focus better on my job and it just went on auto polit and kinda forgot about magic for like 2 years and a half.(1 year for school 1 year and a half for my job) and i am kinda back in at least right now I am collecting and buying singles to when I get back in playing I will be set.
The only thing I could think of that would make me quit Magic would be if there were absolutely zero locations I could play paper Magic magic within a reasonable travel distance (under an hour). This includes stores, clubs, playgroups, etc. The only thing that would make me stop, is if I physically could not find people to play with. If that happens, I probably would invest more in MTGO.

Quick side note: Standard is "toxic" right now? Geeze, I think it's never been better! Every archtype is represented. You asked for a control deck? Play the UB one that is doing well; my brother has 4-0ed 3 weeks in a row playing it.
Anyhow, back to the OP: I don't think anything would; even if Wizards stopped making the game, I'd still play at home with my friends. I think Modern is the most fun constructed format they've ever had (perfect mix of powerful, but not degenerate), and I will play it as long as I'm able -- even if my friends quit, even if my cards were stolen.
