Ive noticed that a couple of websites (such as this) offer trading services. Can someone explain to me how this works?

First come the goblins. Hordes of them. But soon the ramp produced by xenagos attracts monstrous token-producing hydras. Towering over the battlefield, these 12-headed killing machines are protected 2 archetypes of endurance as they crash any resistence left
So there isn't any system to stop people from scamming you??? Im not risking my few cards like that...

If you trade within your own country, criminal laws against mail fraud should protect you (your country may vary).
The main protection is a reputation system, and the convention that if two people trade and one has much less reputation than the other, the lower reputation sends first.

Good. Honestly, in order to use the postal system to trade you need to have a little flexibility and acceptance that there are risks AND that you are responsible for managing those risks. If you are this against it based on what people said you probably don't have the mind set to trade online.

Agree with everything Galspanic stated. It does require faith in the other party but for the most part this isn't a problem. Just trade with users with a lot of refs first to build up your own trade references.
However, it sounds like you are a little closed off to the idea, so it's probably a good idea that you aren't attempting a trade.
It's really not that difficult. I have been scammed for $20 ONCE and it was "my fault". I should have known better.
Golden rule: If the trade/sale is too good to be true, IT IS!
If you don't want to trade, that's fine. You need to have some trust and be open to trying something new or else there's no point.
I was skeptical at first, but after trading here for over two years, I have over 240 trades completed here and my collection has grown farther than it ever would have if I didn't trade.
Please, for the love of all that is good and holy, don't trade online. People who are inflexible or jump to conclusions and exhibit really black and white thinking are very difficult to deal with in real life, let alone in an online transaction. You might have been better off doing your own research than asking an open ended question on a forum and making up your mind after two posts from strangers. Just saying.
Trading online is fine, and I've done it in the early days of playing cards. But as the cards I look for have become rarer/more difficult to find I haven't done it in a long time. The few times trades didn't work were eclipsed by all the trades that worked fine.
Trading on here has been for the most part issue free with me. I deal with the people who have good reps on here and if someone is newer or I don't have nay reason to trust them, they send first. Online, I have noticed many people seem to be a little bit more rigid with their dealings, and I probably can include myself in that. If you ever got decided to change your mind, deal with people who have high reps and are established members first. Getting scammed is highly, highly unlikely. No one will throw away 200+ feedback, get banned, and possibly have mail fraud charges for a $20 card. That's just stupid. You'll have to send first for a while, but if you're smart about who you deal with, then you're taking bigger chances with the postal service than you are with your trade partner.
Package your stuff well, always opt for insurance on anything you wouldn't want to lose, and you'll be fine. I've negotiated trades for forces, an Unlimited Sea, other duals, and some fairly higher level stuff to great success. For cards on the lower end of the spectrum, I do try to find it local first, but for more exotic things, I've always been pleased with the trade forums here.

Yeah, I did a lot of online trading back when I played Yu-Gi-Oh. Now, not so much. I don't try to build up a collection, I just build decks. It's a lot easier to just buy singles from an online store or at my LGS, and cash in cards I don't need to my LGS (gotta support the local brick & mortar!) than spend the time and effort required to trade for everything.
The fact that I have a steady job now, and was in grade school when I played YGO also plays a significant part in it.
There are several reasons why i dislike trading online.
First, said reputation system. if you deal with sites like magiccardmarket.eu, you will learn that a small but not unsignificant part of mails get lost in the mailing system.
So, if you have little reputation, you have to take the risk of your own mails getting lost as well as that of the mail you get. You take double risk, your partner takes none.
why should i do that?
the second part is the rising amount of counterfeit cards. While you might spot them in a trade in person, you get to see the cards only if you open your letter.
If you got a fake that way, its hard to prove you didnt swap it. the same might be true with the condition of the traded cards.
Mail is very rarely getting lost unless you buy uninsured from Italy, Spain or Portugal. The mail service in Germany, Sweden, France etc. lose less than 0.1 % of the mail and if you buy insured letters it's even better. I'd say 0.1 % of the trades is an insignificant number, but that's just me with my statistics degree.
One issue here is that while experienced online traders know that the mail systems in Italy, Spain, Brazil and Portugal are unreliable, those are countries that are generally considered quite advanced by most of the world. Before I started selling on Ebay, I would have considered somewhere like Indonesia or Thailand higher risk than Spain or Italy, yet the opposite is true.
