When I first started, I thought lumberknot was an amazing card, so I jammed 4 into my G/R deck. I jammed alot of other cards in there too, it was really awkward.
Also, my entire starting group was kinda funny. I ran B/W exalted, and it was the only "aggro" deck in our group at the time. People hated to play against it. Oh how things have changed since then...
Long time ago my friend trying to sell me a Dark Confidant for $10 , he said "Trust me, you won't regret if you buy this card, it is worth the price"
Then I wait a few day later still can't decide to buy this card or not so I used the money to buy other cards like avatar of woe, skeletal vampire, bunch of big creatures for $20 and didn't buy Bob.
I wish I had pretty much any of the three collections I have lost over the years and kept playing regardless of those pitfalls.
Collection 1: Alpha - Chronicles. That collection was sold out from under me by my parents due to Chronicles decreasing card value and them not liking that. I didn't quite understand it at the time, and in hindsight...oh god.
Collection 2: Mirage - Urza's Destiny. This was sold out from under me due to a cross country move. I was much angrier this time as I liked my cards and had even rebuilt part of the first collection.
Collection 3: 7th Edition - 8th Edition: The big cards from this collection got stolen from me during a rotten day of high school. I played a LOT of Onslaught block and don't want to think about how many fetches were lost.
Collection 4: Current collection is largely M13 - now. I lost a fair amount of will to play after the third collection was swiped and rarely played for many years. I missed out on glorious times from what I hear and it saddens me that I was so stupid.
I remember that when I first started playing, my friends and I started with 7th edition intro decks and built up our collections from there. One of the mistakes we made often was on weekend playing against adults, we'd get beat by an adult, be so amazed by what they played, then go and buy as many cards as we could at once that was close to what they were playing.
I remember one night loading up on Merfolk and Counter Spells.
Also, never knowing about the second main phase, we weren't the brightest bunch of kids.
Asking my friends in middle school to get me Prophecy boosters for my birthday in order to get an Avatar of Woe (thought she was the coolest card at that time). Later on in high school, discovering that there is a precon deck containing said card!
Traded Call of the Herd, a valuable card at that time for a junk rare.
Thought onslaught fetch-lands sucked because you had to lose 1 life.
Had my deck passed during lunch time because someone wanted to see what I had. When I got it back all the rares were stolen.
I basically learned Magic by teaching myself (without a rulebook to go by) and back when I first started I didn't know Mana emptied at the end of phases. So I would keep a notebook nearby where I would write mana totals down. Of course that changed as soon as I actually got to see a game of magic getting played so I never actually played a game with that mistake in effect.
When I started, I thought that if a creature had vigilance, it could attack multiple times in one turn. So, if your opponent has an empty board, that Standing Troops will win you the game!

When I was new to magic. An older cousin convinced me to have only one copy of each card in my decks, he said it's more fun playing that way. His reasoning is that I can only have one "superman", one "batman" and so on... as a result my first decks lost to almost anything.
I played with that cousin often, so it took months before I realized that it's ok to have play sets of cards in my decks.
When I first started playing, I didn't know that there was a combat phase, I just assumed you could attack any time during your turn and as many times as you wanted providing you had enough untapped creatures. I would put Hidden Strings on Deathcult Rogue and continually attack and untap it.
Surprised nobody's mentioned it yet because it's such a common noob mistake...
I had no idea that activated abilities could be played more than once per turn. For a long time I wondered what the big deal was with cards like Shivan Dragon - so it can attack for 6, big deal? And I had no idea how Necropotence could be card advantage when all it does is replace your draw step...

I thought instants and sorceries were like trap cards from yugioh. So i would play them face up and activate them rounds later.
Also, I thought that you had to attack creature by creature instead of one attack.
Yeah, I came from yugioh.

2 years ago my friend got me back into magic so we went out and built RDW just a few hours before FNM started so I didn't get to learn the deck, mostly proliferate and bloodthirst, were triggers I missed a lot.
Collection wise: I played a decade ago but after a few years I didn't feel like playing anymore so I sold most of my rares at the time including breeding pools, overgrown tombs, a foil stomping grounds, flooded strand, polluted delta, chord of callings, so I was a little mad at not keeping any of them since most only went up in price.
Tried to cast Necropotence, targeting my opponent in order to prevent them from drawing cards

Let my friend who taught me how to play magic respond to my attackers by tapping them. When I found out... man. But that was the way he was taught too, so it was not malicious.
Bought a starter pack with a friend back in Revised. We were only 12 at the time and didn't understand the directions and tried playing with a single shared library. Nothing made sense so we gave up.
I finally got into it a year and a half later during 4th Edition when another friend formally taught us how to play.
With all the money I spent on 4th Edition cards, man I wish I got to invest in it during Revised.
I thought that declaring one attack per turn meant declaring one attacker. My friend and I would have 2-3 hour duels that always ended with me getting my Chromium out on the board.
And I traded 9 dual lands for an unopened box of 4th edition. This was when duals were $12-$15 each.
Also, my entire starting group was kinda funny. I ran B/W exalted, and it was the only "aggro" deck in our group at the time. People hated to play against it. Oh how things have changed since then...

An awesome deck was composed of 19 lands and 4 shivan dragons, 3 force of nature and a lord of the pit with at least 4 royal assassins.
