Fetches, and duals to a lesser extent, are the biggest constraint I have on maintaining decks. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for a reprint on the fetches, as that will solve 90% of the problem by freeing up all of the fetches I have in Modern decks. The problem becomes even more complicated with the current Standard format tying up my shock lands, Thoughtseize, and a few other cards. I've alleviated some of the problem by sleeving all of my decks uniformly (KMC Hyper Matte blacks, double sleeved w/ perfect fits) so I can change cards in and out easily, but it's still a pain to keep up with which deckboxes currently have which cards in them. Yea, 1st world problems, humble brag, etc. It's a tough life. I also sold off a lot of extra Legacy decks I'm no longer playing, but I still find myself shuffling around to find Wastelands and other staples when switching between certain decks.
Other than owning multiple playsets of key cards, I don't have a better solution. As they reprint staples (Thoughtseize being a HUGE relief now that I can trade for and afford to keep multiple playsets), things get easier. Over the last couple years, I've also made a point to grab multiple playsets of good cards that are going to see play across multiple decks. I've got 3 extra playsets of both Deathrite Shaman and Abrupt Decay for just this reason. Worse case scenario, I end up trading/selling the extras I don't need as the prices go up after rotation.
So someone shares the same problems. The problem became really apparent for me a month ago when I had to buy a 4th Scapeshift because I couldn't find my last copy, which presumably was in some odd EDH deck. I checked my Captain Sisay and Elves. I couldn't see any other partially constructed EDH decks around.
By the way, do you use the high definition proxies. If so, what website do you go to print them? I think this will be the "new thing" that I do, but this opens up to other problems too unfortunately.
There are other cards that I have a lot of trouble finding and honestly if it is a cheap card, I just buy another. But with Scapeshift, that cost me another $15 when I knew for sure that I bought the playset over a year ago (at the same time as buying Prismatic Omens).
I guess my point with going off topic is that if people have too many decks lying around and that are not in use, it's better to take them fully apart and put the cards in binders. I did this a few months ago, but have so far to go still.
Legacy - Sneak Show, BR Reanimator, Miracles, UW Stoneblade
Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/ Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves
Standard - Mono Red (6-2 and 5-3 in 2 McQ)
Draft - (I wish I had more time for limited...)
Commander - Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build) (dead format for me)
I'm somewhere between casual and competitive. I like going 3-1 or 4-1 at FNM, but I'm not flying to tournaments or even attending many locally.
I've actually gone from "tons o' decks" to fewer as time goes on. Last Standard I went a bit crazy and played twelve, maybe thirteen decks in that Standard... then Standard rotated, and had no-where to play them anymore and felt rather annoyed.
I find I prefer playing one deck for a while to get really comfortable with the ins and outs of it, too. If you aren't used to a deck, you can forget the subtle synergies and alternate wins that are there, and the deck just feels more familiar.
It's also the amount of time you have to play. I play once or twice a week, tops, so I only have so much time to spend between decks.
Right now I have one primary deck in Modern and Standard, and one secondary deck in each, so four I usually use, plus a couple totally casual ones that don't get much daylight. I'm more or less happy with this.

This is me with my cube all the time. I'm always writing down which decks are borrowing cards, or being borrowed from
@FoodChainGoblins: I have a 'library' system I use for checking cards in/out In general, most format staples are checked out and are in decks or a temporary zone and most non-staple cards are in binders, by set, by collector number so I can quickly find those pesky only-playable-in-edh cards when I'm rebuilding decks.
Here is my approximate deck breakdown by environment:
EDH: 9 built (another 5 about to begin construction).
Standard: 5 built (about 8 others close to completion).
Modern: 1 built (no others yet under construction).
Legacy: 0 technically built to be true legacy decks (though some below could count) (1 currently under construction).
Vintage: Same as legacy.
Old Standard/Block: About 100 built (and another 120+ under construction). This is my bread and butter.
For all intents and purposes I basically collect decks. My quirk is a somewhat financially unhealthy fascination with never breaking down my standard decks after rotation as well as maintaining all historically important decks for every standard/block environment (starting in '95 with Fallen-4th-Ice Age through today). I have built, or under construction, approximately 8-12 decks from each of those environments usually including the most predominant archetypes of that period plus a couple of my own homebrews. I also build all the decks with their contemporary cards and refuse to use newer or older copies. And I absolutely never swap cards between decks. The decks are essentially nothing more that posterity pieces since I can rarely find anyone to play them against.
But, when the opportunity arises, there is no feeling of nostolgia like pulling out and playing an old pre-ban Academy or Replenish, Tinker, Ankh Tide, Vise Tax, Necro, ErnieGeddon, RecSur, Pros Bloom (my favorite deck ever), or any of the countless others I have then seeing other long-timers at the shop say, "Hey! I remember that deck. Wow!"
I have thousands upon thousands of cards (I've been playing for 18 years and ended up collecting other peoples collections I can't afford that many cards xD)
That being said I have about 20 decks at a time mostly because that is all that fits in my deck boxes and I can't justify getting more. It's always fun to have non-standard and other themed decks then have your standard(if necessary) for when the time comes!

Apparently, 7.7% of people own 50+ decks...
