And here I am thinking I'm doing the right thing when the girl at sonic gave me my $17 in change and my original $20 back. I told her, gave her back the $20, probably saving her job.. Most you guys have no conscience at all.
MTG related, I ripped up a Unlimited Black lotus in a tournament one time, because this guy was harassing me about trading it or him buying it (it was "worth" $50 back then). I'd have given him the card if he wasn't so damn pestering and trying to shark me with countless stupid rares such as Ivory Tower and Personal Incarnations. I gladly ripped it up, just to show him I didn't give a damn about the "value" of the game.. Glad I kept my other lotuses though, now that I think about it.. A good story to tell, but man... I never expected it to be that expensive now.
The change thing is different to me because someone could lose a job over it and it was money instead of cards. I generally try not to shark young kids or new collectors, but if you took the time to build them reasonable decks from their cards and even add your own, then short of taking a foil elspeth or similar, I wouldn't call that sharking as long as you were genuinely trying to help them out.

Yeah you sure showed him! That thousand bucks today might be enough to pay off your mortgage, or help pay your kids college fund. But you were gonna show that shark who's boss!
P.S. That was sarcasm by the way.
Also, talking about a conscience, like you have some sort of moral superiority over others who don't share your same esteem of values, is quite ludicrous at best.
In one scenario, she gets to keep her job.
In the other scenario, she loses her job.
I've been fired from McDonalds, Sonic, Gamestop, Brookstone.
And then I realized. "Huh. These jobs suck." and I got into doing what I loved.
You my friend, by not getting that girl fired, may have played a hand in keeping her in a dead end food service job that she only keeps because it's there and paying her bills. With her back to the wall she doesn't get the gumption to quit or the scenario where she gets fired from her job, thus able to collect unemployment to try and find out what she likes.

Chances are the person working at sonic in this scenario is around highschool age, as most roller skating fast-food servers tend to be, so unemployment and needing the motivation for bigger and better would probably be a waste here

I was 12 when I started doing what I loved for a living. Finding that out isn't age specific.
Also roughly 60% of people working fast food are over 20.

Actually very informative study, thanks for posting. You could also say however that 60% are 24 or younger so most are high school or college age.
But this post is supposed to be about finding rare and old cards at great deals. I actually just left a Barnes and Noble that had all of its RTR block 80% off. They had fatpacks, lots of boosters, and intro decks in a big clearance bin.
Seen the same girl at IGA this morning.. She remembered me.. Said thanks because she could've lost her job.. She actually has 2 jobs.. Trying to put herself through college.. I guess I should be sooo sorry that I kept her in a dead end job.. What a bad person I am.. And to the post that said he got fired from 3 or 4 jobs.. You know who gets fired? People who aren't good at the job they're doing. I'm 35, been working since I was 15 and I have NEVER been fired from a job.. Anyway, sorry to derail the thread.
If I was the OP, I'd probably have paid the guy what he asked as well, but I would've told him that I'd keep the cards and appreciate the deal.. I can't say if I would have told him about ebay or not, because it is the sellers responsibility to know the value of the stuff he is selling, but I'd probably still feel bad.

Buy. Up. All of it. Or if you don't want to. Tell me where and I'll buy it all. Deathrite Shamans and Sphinx's Revelations oh my ♥
And to the post that said he got fired from 3 or 4 jobs.. You know who gets fired? People who aren't good at the job they're doing. I'm 35, been working since I was 15 and I have NEVER been fired from a job..
Wait. Whut?
I kind of like that I was insulted for being fired from menial dayjobs.
Oh, I was also fired from this one company cause I would rock out to ELO on my headphones while doing data-entry. I got fired like.. on day 3.
But you know what the neat thing is? I get to work an hour a night, and get paid what most people make in 2-3 days.
But you're right, I should have really kept up with that job at McDonalds so I could be 35, stalking a girl at Sonic and IGA to brag that I gave back 20$ on a website.
Stalking? You got issues kid.. I went shopping at IGA, so now I'm a stalker.. My wife wanted a shake at Sonic.. So I'm a stalker.. LMAO...And bragging? Aren't you the one doing that saying you "get to work an hour a night, and get paid what most people make in 2-3 days"?
You need to read up on some definitions, because you're making yourself look mighty ignorant on here. I'm not going to bother replying further to you, as I'm sure a mod will come in here and warn us both.
I logged in after forever because I was so curious as to what you do for a living in order "to work an hour a night, and get paid what most people make in 2-3 days".
On topic: Raided a box of commons and found some bolts, vapor snags, goblin ringleaders for around 7 cents each. Easiest 4 dollars I've spent ever.(Not so much a unicorn compared to a mox...)
One story from the opposite side: Guy sees that some youngster has a Noble Hierarch among some crap cards and offers him 5 CZK (0.25 dollars)....kid has no idea how good it is (just a 0/1 creature?) and accepts the deal...... This is just plain wrong....
I think Mark Twain would be a good reference for this situation
"It is better to take what does not belong to you than to let it lie around neglected."
—Mark Twain, More Maxims of Mark
I know there's a bunch of 'Don't rip people off' stories and such, but the question that always comes to mind is 'What do they want?'
Sure you would never trade your Noble Hierarch for a pile of random rares that wouldn't be suitable for a Standard Constructed deck, but what about them?
In that kids specific situation, do you think he'd be willing to go get the extra 150$ for a playset to make that Noble Hierarch actually work in a deck? To a newer player saying
Veteran: Great you have a 15$ card
Newbie: Really that's awesome! ..Now what?
V: Now you need 3 more.
N: Oh.. Okay I guess!
V: Oh and you need 4 of this 10$ card.
N: Okay..
V: And you need a landbase, probably around 150$, or for a more diverse landbase, looking at 2-300$
N: o-o Whut?
V: Yeah, and then a bunch of these 4$ cards a couple of these 3$ cards.
N: And then I can play?
V: Yeah with a competitive deck.
N: Okay cool I suppose.
V: At least until the next standard season, then you have to get new cards!
But this post is supposed to be about finding rare and old cards at great deals. I actually just left a Barnes and Noble that had all of its RTR block 80% off. They had fatpacks, lots of boosters, and intro decks in a big clearance bin.
Excuse me while I go check my local Barnes & Noble.
Well but imagine the kid finds out he just basically gave away 30$ card.....it could lead even to him quitting the game...
If the kid has a binder for sale and has a 5 CZK stamp on the card then OK, I will snap buy it, but if he doesn't know, then offering him 5 CZK coin is rubbish....
If 30$ was going to make him quit the game, then having to spend more than 30$ to have a competitive standard deck would do the same.
The same people who 'would quit over being jilted 30$' are the same people who get 'mad' when their spells are countered.
Well... I did find a almost NM alpha Mana Vault for 200 dollars or so. And then i later checked the net , they sell them for about 700 dollars or so. Quite the nice find. Oh and i got an Emrakul for 2 terminus, worth 3 dollars a piece at that time, but i couldn't trick the dude, so i made him go through my binder so he could get a way better value for it :).
It's really hard to find the unicorn deals here where i live in sweden. It gets even more difficult if you don't have a car (which i don't have).
Oh and i got a Almost NM Sol Ring for 80 dollars i think. It's worth way more.
So yeah, no huge deals, but there was some sweet ones.
Seen the same girl at IGA this morning.. She remembered me.. Said thanks because she could've lost her job.. She actually has 2 jobs.. Trying to put herself through college.. Yeah man. What a dick by not letting her get fired.
My opinion is that if they are selling at that price, I'll take the deal. Especially if it is an unknown person. Ifit is someone I know our someone I'd probably see again I may think twice about telling them however
If you're the kind of person who doesn't see what's wrong with taking advantage of someone to the tune of several hundred (in some cases thousands) of dollars, then maybe you should go back to playing Yu-Gi-Oh where that kind of behavior is the usual. And I think it's even more of a dick move to knowingly accept the wrong change from someone knowing that it could cost them their job. It's a shame that parents aren't teaching their kids right from wrong these days.
If you're the kind of person who doesn't see what's wrong with taking advantage of someone to the tune of several hundred (in some cases thousands) of dollars, then maybe you should go back to playing Yu-Gi-Oh... *snip*
Stereotyping Yu-Gi-Oh! players, that's totally gonna make your argument go over well with people. /sarcasm
Not saying you don't have a good point that scamming, taking advantage of people **when that does happen** is bad, just ... just feels like such a cheap, unintelligent, and illogical move to generalize like that.
Older packs were kind of see through so he probably checked if there was power before dumping.
I ... agree with being suspect, but can you really conclude that just because somebody has the capability of something automatically means they have done it, or can you only assume that the possibility is there?
