Are you over 30 or 35 or even older and play FNM at your local game store? (I'll be 37 in four months.) Do you have a wife and kids and can't play every week, but still try to stay competitive even when sitting down next to a college student, a high schooler or even younger?
Do you think playmats are kind of silly, even though you'd still like to win one?
Yes, that describes me to a tee. I am also nearly 40 and have really lost my competitive edge. In my past 5 big tournaments, I haven't top 8ed even one of them. Even in FNM, I top 8 only 50%. I don't play test barely at all anymore. I play a different deck every week. Still, even with a wife and a kid, I feel that I should do better.
When I was in my 20s and early 30s, I could top 8 half of the big tournaments that I attended and I had some serious stress in my everyday life. Still, I have to admit that I put much more into the game. I'm just glad that I didn't have a non-Magic related meltdown at any tournament during those times. I've even left tournaments at 5-1 during those times. Dumb kids...

35, have a standard deck made, been made for 3 months and still can't play FNM.. Mainly because I work every single weekend and have to be at work at 4am. Wife and kids - check.. I end up playing against my 11 yr old son.
32, wife, 10-month-old son. I try to get out once/week, but it ends up being probably half that.
Have lots of modern & legacy built... standard changes too fast to be worth it, and I don't get enough practice for limited.
I'm no MTG genius, and definitely make a lot of mistakes, but to be honest most of the young crowd makes as many or more than me... the people who are REALLY good tend to be in their 30's or 40's. But that's modern & legacy, not standard.
I win FNM about 5 times a year and top 8 fairly regularly, though I'm on a long 1-2 drop streak due to choice of deck. Hoping to change that now. I get to play in tournaments about twice a month.
My LGS is probably the most competitive in the entire state (we regularly get 40+ and have to play 5-6 rounds of Magic) so it's excellent practice, even if I do poorly.
I have three kids myself and love spending time with family. But since I've been laid off, I've been able to get out to play more. I'm enjoying it while I can.
30. 2 kids. Wife hardly approves of my gaming hobby any more but I make time for a weekly trip to the LGS for either FNM, EDH, Legacy, Cube, or board games (Settlers of Cataan or Carcassonne mostly).
When I was 27 I had my best competitive year - top 8'd 2 SCG Opens and a PTQ, cashed in a Grand Prix (X-3). I'm not sure I have the time nor the opportunity to ever reach that again but I remind my wife that making the Pro Tour is a bucket-list item for me, so maybe one year she will let me grind for it.
Until then, I'm reserved to a few tournaments a year and a weekly FNM.

Old enough to know better, much too young to care.
33, married, 2 kids. I manage to regularly top 8 locally, out of around 20 players. I even came in 2nd last time, but have not won yet. I only manage to play about once a month. Have played since 1995 and am seen as the 'veteran' of t he group here.
31, married, no kids. Usually do Standard FNM because that's what everyone does but I hate it. Throw sixty cards together and bring them and that's what I roll with. Haven't played in awhile since this Standard is so painfully boring right now. Last FNM I went to was actually a Modern Saturday event and I split first with a B/W/g smallpox list. That was over a month ago. In two weeks will be the monthly Legacy event and I can actually make it this time so I'm looking forward to that! Just unsure if I should try something new or stick with Reanimator.....decisions....
Turned 30 this past February and hit FNM and when they come around SCGs with my 12 year old son. I quit during Mirrodin but came back(with my son) during New Phyrexia. I love the fact I get to share it with him and we bounce ideas and test together. Really strengthens his reading, strategic thought and sportsmanship.
Sucks though when we both Top 8 because we usually face each other and his RG Monster deck is a pain. Proud of him though and the respect he has earned at the shop, nobody underestimates or just thinks he's "some kid" anymore.

That's really neat. I can't wait to start slinging spells with my son but he's only 4 right now.

31, engaged and as of last year the proud payer of a mortgage =P
I hit FNM pretty much every week and also show up here and there for EDH on Tuesdays. The main reason I started playing Magic again was to get out and be social, I do not regret my decision. I am fortunate that most of our players are pretty casual about everything so you can play what you want to play and still have a good time.

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.

This would explain why you know so much about Legacy. I have always wondered about that.
Just turned 30 in April. Married but no kids (yet). I don't have the time to keep up with Standard but I try to get to FNM for a draft at least twice a month. I was quite a competitive player from Onslaught-Fifth Dawn. Even made to PT once. Now, I just let my inner Johnny dictate my deck.

35 here, married, and a kid. I started playing around revised. I stopped somewhere in the middle of Urza series. Came back in Ravnica set. Then left again after Planar Chaos. Now I'm back again (can't stay away from this children's game) since Dragonmaze.
I play standard about once a month. I don't even have time to play test (friends live too far).
Let's add: Who here's spouse hates this game? Mine does!
35 here (turning 36 in September), unmarried, no kids. I started playing around Revised, stopped after Weatherlight, because of Everquest/Dark Age of Camelot/World of Warcraft (I still play World of Warcraft two to three nights a week). I came back to Magic during Mirrodin Besieged, but didn't play in any tournaments until the M13 prerelease.
My ex-girlfriend hated Magic, so I rarely played Magic, aside from FNM. Nowadays, I currently play in draft/Standard tournaments an average of two nights a week. If I want to play Magic outside of the LGS FNM I'm looking at a 30 minute drive (one-way). Typically the people I play against are teenagers/college kids who play in tournaments four to five nights a week. I know I can't commit that much time to the game, but I try my best.
Regarding the playmat question: I was stoked when I won my LGS Theros and Born of the Gods Game Days. There's a competitive store (30 minute drive) that does monthly 1k constructed tournaments that give out custom playmats for Top 8, but I have not played any constructed tournaments there due to wanting to get more practice before I commit 40 dollars plus six to eight hours on a "serious" constructed tournament.

Focused on limited for now. Occasionally play some standard/modern as well.

Honestly not sure if sarcasm?
Regardless, I have more legacy knowledge than skill. I know most of the big decks and a number of obscure ones pretty well in terms of lists and basic strategies, but don't necessarily know all the interactions or lines of play. Skill requires knowledge and repetition, and I have less repetition than I'd like. Still, I do ok... overall legacy record is about 60/40 playing mostly tier 1.5-2 decks, sometimes with budget subs. That's locally... I'm sure I'd do worse at an SCG open or something.
I've found modern harder to learn so far... in some ways it is more varied. It's also less like the "old" MTG I remember playing in the 90's. Record is around 50/50.
Standard, when I played it (briefly), I found to be dominated by younger players (early 20's). I think once you have wife/kids/career and can only play occasionally, most people either quit or move to something that you don't have to "keep up with" so much... Either legacy, modern, EDH, or cube.

Same for me, except replace Legacy with Modern. Also, I currently play Standard, but today will likely be my last FNM for a while. I just got too much stuff going on in life right now to be keeping up with the Joneses. And my previous post was not sarcasm.
33 no kids and a spouse that's whatever about the game. I play fnm infrequently (usually sneak into t8... rarely win it all) as I use my Fridays for EDH with my friends while the missus is at her fun Friday night bowling league. It helps with her having a thing to do. I can't wait to have a kid in the hopes I can one day share this game with him/her.
I find mats annoying, especially when it's crowded, but I do own one.
I never underestimate my opponent based on age... My deck is more apt to screw me over than my opponent.
I'm 40 with a son who will turn 20 this year. I am married with two kids. I've been playing MTG for about 14 years, though I haven't really tried to be all that competitive in meatspace for the last 7 or so. I went to FNM with a buddy this year when I could, but I certainly wasn't impressing anyone with my skills.
44, married with 1 child (who's 15). Lost my job, so opened a toy/game store. Now I run games and play games 4/5 times a week. My son plays too, and my wife helps out when she can. Magic is the best game I've ever played and being at the shop with fellow gamers is the best thing that ever happened to me. It's definitely a rocky road business-wise, but I wouldn't trade this for anything else
34, 35 in Sept. Actually stopped playin FNM right before Maze. Just not into Stnd anymore.
Do want to get out and try a different format tho. Liking Pauper and Vintage these days.
Totally opposite ends of the spectrum but fun to jump between the two.
Also, props to Stevenus for doin what makes him happy... keep at it man.

I'm only 26, but we have well over a handful of players at my LGS that are over 40, much less over 30. In fact I think we only have five or six players under 20.

Don't play Standard any more. Costs too much to get what are mostly sub-optimal cards for Legacy and Modern.
