Hey all, first time posting in Magic General. I'm currently not playing this game very much, and haven't gone to an FNM in a long time. I do hope to start going again soon, but I've a problem. I can't figure out quite when to move my standard stuff. I'm thinking probably right after M15 hits, but I'm not certain. Any and all help would be appreciated.
You should probably look to move your stuff soon if you are not going to use it. There are not a lot of big cards out of M14 outside of Scavenging Ooze and maybe Archangel of Thune. Mutavaults will keep some value, but not at the high they have held during this Standard (baring a reprint in the next Standard cycle of course). RTR block however has good stuff. Shocks are worth holding onto if you are ever going to play Modern. Abrupt Decay is only going to go up. Even Deathrite Shaman will have long term value since it sees Legacy play. What else... Voice of Resurgence for certain... trying to think if there is anything in GTC specifically but coming up blank.

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.
GTC has Domri Rade and five shocklands. The former is a card that could be $8 in a year, or could be $50, and it's really just about impossible to predict. He is certainly strong enough to see Modern play.
The cards that will be hammered by rotation:
- Sphinx's Revelation
- Blood Baron
- Advent of the Wurm (not that it is doing well price wise now but one good result of WG aggro in a tournament and it will)
- Jace, Architect of Thought
There's more but these come to mind as cards that are excellent* in Standard but see no Modern play at all.
* - Advent is out of favor at the moment but it is an inherently strong card.
As for Mutavault - it will fall and rebound in time if not in M15. If it is in M15, it will fall and not rebound. Modern demand for the card is still above its present supply.
I'm going to move Baron as soon as I'm not playing him, but Revelation I'll hold onto- mostly because I plan on building UWR Control in Modern, but also because I think it'll hold value. As for the other cards, yeah, I'm gonna dump a lot of those. Domri I think sees a decent amount of Modern play.

Sphinx's Revelation is played in Modern in WUR Control. Also, Mutavault is only used in 3 Modern decks. While it will rebound eventually, it will take a while.

In general, I guess a good answer to your question would be "it depends". If you plan to play Standard competitively until the new block hits, they you might not have a choice but to hold on to some RTR/M14 cards that would be key components in your deck. If you're more of a casual player, you can actually try to "rotation proof" whatever deck you're playing and start moving your Standard legal cards starting now. I'm not an expert in MTG Finance but I believe that most of these (RTR/M14) cards have already reached their peak prices and it is more likely that their prices will go down in the next few months rather than go up (unless there's a breakthrough deck that involves specific cards).
Some cards from the RTR/M14 sete that you might want to hold on to include (Shodai provided most of these cards from the thread mentioned above):
Mythics/Rares
(mid-high value)
* All 10 Shocklands
* Mutavault
* Voice of Resurgence
* Abrupt Decay
* Deathrite Shaman?
* Sphinx's Revelation
* Domri Rade
(low-mid value)
* Supreme Verdict
* Loxodon Smiter
* Detention Sphere
* Counterflux
* Boros Reckoner
* Nivmagus Elemental
(for the commander/edh crowd):
* Cyclonic Rift
* Trostani
* Jarad
* Niv-Mizzet
* Chromatic Lantern
Every year it gets earlier. Also, everyone else is thinking the exact same as you, so the market is flooded with Standard staples that are rotating. There seem to be plenty of buyers, but be warned, most of these buyers are looking for deals on Modern/Legacy playables that they think have bottomed out. None of them would touch Reckoners with a 10 foot pole unless they're given an absolute deal that they could move quickly. I mean, ask yourself, would you pay $40 for a set of a card you're going to use for a few months? In my opinion there's only a small subset of the market that would- namely wealthy people who have recently joined who are looking to build competitive regardless of the cost.
Anything that is rotating out this year that YOU DON'T PLAY, aside from shocklands, should likely be sold nowish. If you're not playing it and you're not going to, don't just wait until the last minute, especially if it has any value. It's not going any higher, or, if it somehow does, it won't go much higher. Beat the pre-rotation rush & plunge by selling nowish.
you probably should have moved them 4-5 months ago, as everything (except shocklands and abrupt decay) have been plummeting. I think boros reckoner has potential in modern because he is powerful and combos well with other things. domri rade took a big hit in the past week or 2, he was sitting at $30 and now $22 mid, with some low prices around $15. he may go lower, and will be a great pick up. same with sphinx's revelation. most of the cards from m14 will drop substantially, like archangel of thune initially- she is played in pod and is an angel (so a fan favorite) and will eventually go back up, like avacyn. nightveil specters will see the biggest drop, back down to $.50 range.
Also, anything from RtR/M14 to hold on to?
Thanks,
~X

Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
