I havent read the whole thread, but I skimmed through it, and i am here to say that combo is very alive in standard right now with Temur Battlecat/Ascendancy Combo. It can win on turn 4, which is decent in standard terms. It is backed up by big stompy green critters. I like it a lot, but I won a game last night with it and was told how crazy cheap it is to win with combo-MORESO in this person's mind than control. To me, nothing is worse than control, and combo is usually weak, so this stance took me by surprise. So i ask you all, what do you hate more, losing to someone with a smug control face, or losing to someone who finally got their combo deck to win?
What about losing to someone with a smug combo face?
I would rather play against a Combo deck. I feel like when I face a combo deck I usually have some tool to break up the combo, or at least potential to interact with the parts. With Control, I feel like counter spells prevent me from playing.
Just my opinion. And, only from a Standard reference point.

Lol I hear ya. To me its different. To combo off is a joy, the joy of having something work when youve been down trodden to that point. Its a face of joy, not smugness- imo anyway. Control is more smug, because the whole game they are deigning to let you do things. You dont have a way out when they murder/death/kill/counter everything you play. It just feels differently to me. Also from a standard only place- which combos in standard usually take like 5-10 different parts to work haha.... It you lose to combo in standard its not because they win, but because you lose- if that makes any sense at all lol
