The worst trade I ever made was my $25 for my LGS's Born of Gods pre-release
Same!
I'm pretty ahead on my meta studying and traded a Jace AOT for an Archangel of Thune.....back when the Angel was 15...now tcg mid almost 21 and jace is dropping and will definitely drop with the release of the duel deck. Do I feel bad?
I don't remember what I traded them for, but I no-longer have Time Sieve, Misty Rainforest or Desert. Pretty upset by that now I actually understand Magic to some degree. I think I got some big-stompy creatures for them.
Back in onslaught, I remember opening two fetchlands from 1 tournament pack. I think I traded them for goblin sharpshooters, which was probably pretty fair at the time. We all used inquest to price out or cards, so some of the real world values were way off. I traded a foil 8th edition shivan dragon for an unlimited berserk, and traded a foil platinum angel for something else, and both of those were worth $50 according to the magazine (but probably only $10 at the time).
Nowadays with smartphones, there's different types of ripping. I've seen people try to trade cards at tcg high for tcg low, or what might be $5 in their favor on tcg is $5 against on scg, or there's the person who is trading steam vents for sacred foundry (land for land is fair, right?), when sacred foundry is significantly more. I don't think I've ever seen someone trade a Jace for a dollar or anything like that.
When I first started playing a bit more competitive (I was more casual when I first started) it was when RAV first came out. I traded my Dark Confidant for 4 Watchwolf. Everytime I look at or read about dark confidant now, I get upset.....
I basically don't trade anymore, but about a year ago I made the worst trade I've ever personally made. I was planning on playing UWR Geist in an upcoming SCG event and we were testing Aurelia's Fury and I really needed one and didn't want to spend $30 to buy one. So... I traded my friend a Jace and a Griselbrand (probably $25 total at the time) for a Fury... oof.

My worst trade ever was about 8 years ago, just before I quit Magic. I had grown tired of the game and wanted to cash out. I found a nifty online store that paid a decent buck on their buy-list, and decided to sell my collection at the time. This collection was worth about $2500 at the time. However, if I had just sat on it, it would probably be closer to $10000 now (Pretty much a playset of every card from Rav block, Kami block, Mirrodin block, plus many money rares from Urza/tempest).
Now, this would not have bit as much if I had ever received payment for my collection. As a 16 yo kid, I figured i'd just ship them the cards and the store would be honest enough to ship me a check.
Weeks went by, never saw a check, and when I finally went about trying to track down the store it was gone! The number was disconnected and no contact info left.
I got the police involved, and ultimately it turned out the store did actually exist, but that it had gone bankrupt. Because of this, they had no obligation to repay me. Completely my fault, completely stupid, and a mistake that I learned from!
These days, I am slowly growing my collection, and every once in a while I feel a little sting when I pay $50 for a single card I had 4x that I basically burned. However, that is life. The good news is $2500 is nothing compared to what the collection currently is, and my expendable income is in a place I never thought possible! I guess it was good i put down the game for a while and focused on school and developing my career!
I play almost entirely on MTGO now, but while travelling for work in Augusta, Maine I did manage to trade a very short-sighted LGS owner my 4x Bonfire of the Damned for his 4x Windswept Heath straight up.
People who "disrupt" people making "unfair" trades are ridiculous. How would you feel if you were a electronics store, selling a TV, and I pointed out to a customer that he/she could get the same TV for significantly less online? You would feel pretty peeved, and rightfully so.
I wouldn't do that sale in the first place? I wouldn't bring myself to sell something to someone on a price 1000% higher than it actually is. In fact, I doubt such a store would stay in business for long. Far as I know, in my area if you can get say, a TV cheaper online, our stores actually price match to that (within reason, and provided you have proof).
I'm saying this all in context of a trade being truly "unfair", like if I traded a Shockland for 4 foil fetchlands. As far as my trading goes, I'm always fine losing 2-3 dollars if the trade was like 30 dollars in the exchange.
Are you saying you'd actually be morally fine ripping off a new kid who just started magic by doing something as ridiculous as trading a bunch of garys for a Nykthos?
That really is the important part. It's one thing if two adults are entering into a trade and one doesn't know what they are doing and gets ripped off. Yeah, the shark is a jerk, but I'm not sure I'd feel compelled to step in.
An adult ripping off a minor though, that's different. I'm sorry, I just couldn't allow that.
Well, to put that into perspective, I (who you call "shark") am 13. Does that make it morally more or less acceptable to "rip people off"? What if the other person was slightly younger (10-12)? Age should not be relevant!
Honestly, it boggles me that people are actually taking up this argument.
You're boggled that people are taking up the argument that they feel morally compelled when one party is getting MAJORLY ripped off?
Yes, age shouldn't be relevant. The only time I'd not care about ridiculously skewed trades if both parties know what they're doing and one guy simply doesn't care.
Worst trade was when I started the game (around Theros), I was looking for just in general good "red" cards to use. Traded away some decent stuff for a foil Lava Spike.
Took me awhile to learn that 1. Lava Spike wasn't standard legal and 2. The thing didn't even hit creatures.
When I first started playing I opened up a Call of the Herd from a tournament and swapped it for a Ghitu Fire and Planeswalker's Fury. I think Call of the Herd was at least $20 at the time. As a kid I thought it was a good trade since I was getting 2 cards for 1 and the cat picture was cool.
While not a bad trade at the time because of equivalent value, I traded Avacyn,ANgel of Hope for an Angel of Serenity. Now, my plaset of angel of serenities wouldnt buy an Avacyn the value is quite disparate it haunts me.
Worst I've seen but was not around to stop was Griselbrand for Nefarox. Needlesss to say, i had good long chat with the guy on the wrong end of that one about checking value etc.
Not necessarily a trade, but when I wasn't all that into Magic, around 2008-11, I gave a Thoughtseize, Cryptic Command, and later on a Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas and a Sarkhan the Mad all to one friend who clearly wanted it more than I did. I had no idea the value of those cards.
I would say that most of these comments weren't even about trade, but looking back at heignsight and then looking at the price now
My worst trade:
My Tundra and 5 Scalding Tarns for His 4 Mutavaults.
My first big trade and somehow he got me to agree to valuing the Tundra at 60.... it was NM....minus a indent from a pen mark or something. Live and learn right?
Worst trade ive ever heard of is some one trading a tybalt for 2 blue zendikar fetches. I asked the dude who traded the tybalt about it and he saidit was the best trade he ever made. I hear two rares for a mythic is pretty good
They were both $30 and I didn't understand how hot standard cards aren't good investments. Nobody really knew that at that point the dual lands would start sky rocketing either. Tundra had been $20-$30 for years.
I'm not sure what I got, but I know I traded a Berserk when I first started playing in Jr. High druing UNL/REV days. I always thought it was a dumb card since I had to kill the creature afterwards. Why would I want to do that right? Most likely I traded it for a Leviathan or Sea Serpent or some stupid fatty that was worthless.
In the same way you can tell someone is from the XVIII century because he is arroused by ankles, you can tell someone is from USA because he feels nipples disturbing.

Your analogy is severely flawed. It assumes that the situation in question is a fair exchange of goods mutually agreed upon and
not predicated upon deception. In reviewing your argument, I've attempted to fix the analogy for you.
You are in an electronics store, attempting to sell a 21" black-and-white television to a blind man, explaining to him that it is in fact a
72" Hitachi HDTV. Someone intervenes and kindly explains to the gentleman with poor eyesight that you are being less than forthright with him
and seem to be engaged in shenanigans.
I traded an Obliaterate for a Decimate at the time I didn't realize that Decimate was so conditional (before the 2004 ruling). What made the trade worse was I played B/R almost exclusively.
Worst trade ive ever heard of is some one trading a tybalt for 2 blue zendikar fetches. I asked the dude who traded the tybalt about it and he saidit was the best trade he ever made. I hear two rares for a mythic is pretty good
But it is a pretty good trade for the tybalt guy.
tybalt's worth like nothing, fetches are worth way more.
I once traded an Elbrus, the Binding Blade for a Batterskull. She refused to trade any way but card for card and wouldn't accept any other cards I tried to give her to make up the difference.
I traded a Korean foil Chandra the Pyromaster for a Voice of Resurgence and two Temple Garden. I checked mtgsalvation's opinions of the card when it came out and tried to get rid of it like a hot potato (lots of people saying how bad it was including my playgroup). In just a few weeks, that card spiked like crazy. I was a sad panda for a while.
It's still greasy to not inform people of the value of their cards, but in fairness they live in this world, where everything has a value and the internet exists. Look the damn **** up.
I can't look things up because I can't afford the monthly data plan on a smart phone on a college student's lack of income. So I should be treated as less than another who can in a trade?
Bleh I'm sorry I'm taking this thread off topic. Ignore me.
Um... yes. If you willingly negotiate from a disadvantage that is no ones fault but your own. You have options. Research prices ahead of time or print a price guide or ask the person you're trading with to pull up the value and show you.
Knowledge isn't a right. No one is born with it and I don't see it as the job of those who have it to give it away. Do your research or get what you get. If you want to educate people feel free but you're under no obligation.
Same!

Maybe a little, but I needed that 4th angel!
EDIT: I love the new Card image feature.
