Wizards of the Coast has just announced that they're getting into the money printing business!
I was thinking about hoarding a lot of coins before the prices skyrockets.
After all, not only is it real silver, it has images of real cool art on them. And it's backed by Wizards of the Coast, so you know it's legit. Each coin comes with their own certification of authenticity! This is just the coolest thing they've done since as far back as I can remember!
I thought this was fake but was incredibly surprised to to see it was real. Mere days after announcing $75 precons, Wizards of the Coast seeks to harness the collectable nature of their playerbase and channel it to the elaborate 'buy silver' schemes that have become popular as of late.
If silver is so awesome, why do they want my dollars for this? Nonetheless, it would be sweet to pick up one of these, as silver dealers I have browsed require you to fork over $500+ dollars minimum. I just want $100-200 to see if it can outrace my Wastelands.
Unfortunately, I think the lame JTMS picture* and limited supply is going to inflate the price of these silver products to unreasonable proportions, so getting it at the fair price of silver is probably out of the picture.
(The only silver I have is a $7 dime someone spent at my job a couple years back)

Decks:
Legacy: RWBG Goblins RRR Burn WBU Affinity UBR Sac-Land Tendrils! BBBPox
Next possible deck: D&T, but that just wouldn't be right.
Modern: R Goblins (work in progress)
Standard: I only care about standard when Goblins is a deck.
Limited: I only care about limited when Goblins are in the set.

Why would you ever expect to pay anywhere remotely close to the base metal cost of silver for a piece of silver that has been specially cut, printed on, packaged, and niche marketed to special collectors???
If you want silver just to invest in metal:
1) Look up the price of silver
2) go to your local pawnshop, and ask for whatever their crappiest silver jewelry is that has no aesthetic value and that they are willing to sell for as close to the price of silver as possible
If you want a little more assurance of being able to resell, you can pay a bit more over spot for things that are stamped and such, but it's all a bit of a gamble as to what people will believe later anyway. Which is the main reason I wouldn't really recommend investing in silver physical metal anyway, unless you're preparing for some sort of social meltdown.
Otherwise, it's probably a lot safer to invest in silver financial equities on paper if you expect its price to go up (or remain stable) and want your money in it. No ambiguities there.
I've been playing since Unlimited. Big into eternal formats, play Vintage regularly. I give you this background because, apparently, this makes me violently not the target audience for this product.
This is wildly retarded. I cannot conceive of any possible thought process that lead anyone at Wizards to say: "You know what we should do next? Let's find a country that will let us mint legal tender with Jace the Mind Sculptor on it." And, in the incredibly unlikely event someone had such a stupid idea, I cannot wrap my mind around a group of people deciding this was a good idea and spending money doing it. HOWEVER -- both of these things happened!
I guess it's at the final step now. Are there people who are actually going to buy Jacebuxx?
I really hope they make a seedy late night infomercial for this. With a dude dressed up in a cheesy Jace outfit telling the viewers how they should "avoid future regret and missed opportunities by investing in REAL PURE JACE SILVER for a low price of five times more than silver is worth!"
They can play it right after reruns of I love Lucy or something.
Rabid collectors with way too much money who live in New Zealand?
Who else would want silver minted New Zealand currency with Jace plastered on the front of it?
Did we really need a coin with the Queen of England opposite from Jace the Mindsculpter? If they wanted to do this, why not just make a collectable token that wasnt an actual coin in some random country?
Though it does bring up the question of... which side is tails?
I think history indicates that this item will probably go up in value. The first time Magic does anything, it becomes collectable. The Elves vs. Goblins Duel Deck is the example I can think of off the top of my head. Retailed for $20, work $100+ now. I don't know enough about the non-card Magic products to say for sure, but looking at some life counters and other random stuff, it is clear that junk like this will go up in value.
Haven't decided if I will buy. I don't know if I care enough about making the $50-100 I expect this to appreciate in the first year or so to make it worth the hassle.
As someone who plays Magic, collects silver coins, and has a fond nostalgia for time spent living in New Zealand, I'm basically the target market for this and I'm definitely getting at least one.
That said, how many other people could Wizards possibly expect to be interested in something so specialized and so far from any other Magic product?
They only mint as much as people want, if they don't sell them they still have silver than they can remelt, there is literally no way to lose money on this. I don't see why they wouldn't do it.

It sure looks awesome, but I only have so much money for Magic that I can't start collection Magic coins too. Cardboard. I only have money for the damn cardboard.

Just because it's a "coin" (rectangle?) and created by an internationally recognized mint, does not necessarily make it legal tender. Many (most?) collectible coins/bills are not legal tender.
That doesn't mean it has no value, but it does mean you can't necessarily hand it to the checkout guy at your local Walmart and expect it to pay for your purchases.

Or possibly google "industrial silver shot" and get a bag of random chunks of silver for only like 5% over monex spot rates. Here:

for ~$2,000, you can get silver 3% over spot.

Agreed. It's impressive how they somehow did something stupider than "Protection from target player".
Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.

Not like I'd buy it anyway. The Queen of England on the back is a deal breaker for me.
I'm curious as to why the Queen of England would be on the back of New Zealand currency.

Because Elizabeth II is the queen regent of New Zealand. (She's the monarch of sixteen countries including the UK.)
