I was thinking about getting a box from an older set to draft with some buddies, all cost aside what is the most fun set to draft.:)
Edit: i was thinking maybe merquadian masques
In the same way you can tell someone is from the XVIII century because he is arroused by ankles, you can tell someone is from USA because he feels nipples disturbing.
I quit for a long time so I missed everything after the 1st Kamigawa set so my drafting bias is based on that. I really enjoyed both Odyssey and Onslaught Block, especially Torment. Judgement, Onslaught and Scourge were ok but had their hitches.
I'm a huge fan of the swamps, so Torment was great fun for me and others at my local shops.

CASSILDA: Indeed it's time. We all have laid aside disguise but you.

If money isnt an issue, Modern Master is THE best set ever for drafting ever made, but it is costly.
After that triple Rise or triple RAV/RRG/RGD are all good.
Invasion was solid, as was triple Innistrad
Really depends on your budget.
Agreed about Modern Masters. I often see people complaining about the price of Modern Masters Limited, but usually you have to pay to play. The price is about as high as the extra fun factor that you get.
Time Spiral block was also good, as was Zendikar block.

Legacy - Sneak Show, BR Reanimator, Miracles, UW Stoneblade
Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/ Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves
Standard - Mono Red (6-2 and 5-3 in 2 McQ)
Draft - (I wish I had more time for limited...)
Commander - Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build) (dead format for me)
I actually wish to add one more suggestion, If you want to draft on the cheep, get some homelands, that is a surprising fun (if slow and extremely underpowered by our standards) draft.
Man, you really know how to kick below the belt don't you?
Wellwisher.dec was brutal.

Time Spiral block was really fun to draft overall. Suspend was a terrific limited mechanic. I think I actually liked 3xTSP the best, with all the old-school purple cards running around. I remember winning a match on the back of Sacred Mesa; once I got the Mesa out, I don't think I played another spell the rest of the game. Just cranked out Pegasi as fast as I could.
I've been drafting since Weatherlight. (Mirage-block drafts were not really common in Europe, Urza's -block was the first real highly drafted format with Tempest somewhere in the middle. And please don't draft 3x Weatherlight. Shadow and Empyrial Armor really make the format bad.
Depending of what you and your friends like here are some suggestions of good formats, I've liked to draft.
1) you are into slow and grindy games and know enough to cut the most popular archetype from ruining your fun.
- 3x Mercadian Masques or full block (Just don't let anybody get all the rebels)
- 3x Coldsnap
- 3x Kamigawa
- 2x Kamigawa + 1 Unhinged
- 4th - 10th edition (altough can be bomb driven)
- 6x Homelands
2) Great gameplay, but bombs end many games
- Magic2010, 2011 and 2012 (Surprisingly good formats and fun now)
- 3x Rise of Eldrazi
- IPA-block
- Time Spiral, either 3x TSp or full block, Both are great.
- Original Ravnica -block
- Full Kamigawa-block
- Onslaught -block
- 3x Innistrad
- 3x Lorwyn (tribal synergies can steamroll drafts, if people don't know the format, but otherwise great gameplay.)
- Mirrodin block (the better players you play with, the better this format is. If people know to what to pick high, lashdraft and other niche-strategies suddenly open up. If nobody knows what they are doing, somebody will just steamroll others after getting almost constructed level deck, so your mileage might vary.)
- 3x or 2x Unhinged (Surprisingly 3xUnh is playable, but subbing one booster from low powered set is even more fun and lets you run two drafts from one box of Unh. I seriously recommend Kamigawa, as the long card names and limited power level really sync with Unhinged.)
3) If money really isn't a problem (but format must still be playable
- 3x Legends. It's slow and grindy, and some uncommon bombs, like Karakas are nearly unbeatable against some decks.
- Un-draft. Unlimited, Unglued, Unhinged (our local store ran this once)
- Urza's -block. Best way ever to see how formats change is to do first 3x US and then full block...
And if you ever get the chance, run old drafts with foreign cards and only allow people to check what the cards do after the draft. I really loved to do 5th edition and 7th edition drafts with asian product, when nobody had ever seen some of the cards. Both sets had a large number of new arts that haven't been reused.
And above all, have fun. Cracking old boosters, for drafting purposes, feels really good.
Innistrad was such a novel format. Who would have thought that milling and flashback could be so good. Also from a flavour standpoint it was just simply terrific.
Zendikar was good because you never played with such a large amount of agressive weenies.
I also think Shards block was very skill intensive as well. You always had this problem of how high do you consider the mana fixers? Although it had some issues with flameblast dragon and behemoth sledge I still think playing three colour limited decks was a new and great idea.
3x Innistrad stands out in my mind as the best draft format ever. So much so that I want to build an Innistrad pseudo-cube just to keep drafting it. I'm not a cube fan in general.
Is modern masters THAT good of a draft compared to like ISD or TSP because i'm considering it.
Yes.
Think of the best drafting set you have ever drafted, TSP, ISD, RAV.... its better then all combined.
I personally have been playing limited forever in this game and Modern Masters blew me away how good they got it. I know many that would draft MM year around if it was available, me included.

Drafting Modern Masters was quite an experience... I actually made short rib beef bourguignon and we drank wine while drafting. It was a silly but really enjoyable day.
(Real quick question on the side of this conversation: I'm new, but a lot of posts at MTGS compliment Theros as well-balanced for limited play. For those recommending other blocks as fun, how does Theros compare? It's the only set I've ever drafted, so I'm not sure where it rates on the fun scale. Just curious, thanks!)

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)This for sure. Errant Ephemeron vs Durkwood Baloth! Shivan Meteor targeting Stuffy Doll!? All then of a sudden a timeshifted card shows up out of nowhere. "No way! War Barge and Merfolk Assassin is broken!"
It's really random and fun.

I was more a Sparksmith kind of girl when it came to Onslaught. Fun draft block, though. Would draft again if I had the opportunity.
Champions is still good though, ONS ONS LEG is also worth a go.

Just not triple shards. That was a bit boring.

Or, if you like Modern Masters, you can go a step further and try Cube drafting.
