Maybe I would feel better if my tax dollars weren't paying for a "starving artist"'s welfare, but they are so I don't.
A few people are blatantly trying to miss the point here. I'm not talking about someone stealing someone else's art and claiming it as their own. I'm talking about Wizards commissions an artist to do work, they pay the artist whatever they agree on and then wizards puts this art onto tradable cards.
Me doodling on MY cards that I already paid for and then selling them, is none of the artist's business. Alter artists aren't claiming the original art (which is only a small part of what a magic card is ) is their's. They are simply making a magic card that is more desirable to other people. It has zero to do with the artist Magic hired.
Party X prints out Artist A's art and slaps it on Artist B's work and calls it Party X's product and sells it for a huge profit. That is pretty despicable no matter how you look at it. THAT is the real problem here. Art is stolen to hide other art and call it "theirs".
THAT is the point. Not whatever you think about a little smiley face on a Mizzium Mortars or something.

Hi everyone, Steve Argyle here. I'm an MtG artist.
Just want to let people know that the folks at MVP Games are selling stolen artwork...They've removed the artists names and signatures, and any copyright information on the original images.
Requoted for your convenience, THIS is the actual issue in the OP. Not you doodling and selling a defaced magic card.
Maybe I would feel better if my tax dollars weren't paying for a "starving artist"'s welfare, but they are so I don't.
When artists are being stolen from, it's harder for them to make a living from their work, and therefore they are more likely to need outside assistance*. If anything, you should be championing their IP rights -- if for no other reason than to "get them off the welfare" that you are so concerned about.
Get off your high horse.
* not that they necessarily even seek it out, but for the sake of argument let's assume that some do.
Just for the sake of argument, what is being stolen from them?
(I like stirring the pot, don'tchya know, makes discussions more fun)
"Stirring the pot" just for the sake of doing it detracts from the discussion. It's only "fun" if you're a troll. We have enough side arguments going on in this thread already.
Their work is being used without their permission and credit and sold for a large profit.
This is not about the art on the cards themselves. This is about altered art being printed on cards without crediting the altering artist.
I propose that this thread be locked. It's highly volatile and there are many conflicting views. People are starting to troll and I got attacked for presenting some reason into the discussion.
We're getting well off-topic here. Debate is a much better place for arguing ethics and the like, so if you want to take your argument regarding what is right or wrong about "alters," feel free to move it along.
