I would like to collect some cool (can be casual or slightly competitive) magic event ideas for my LGS to use. Something different from your normal FNM/GPT/Win-A-Box. Something outside of the box and just fun to play. Thanks guys!
My playgroup wants to try out a form of Vanguard using the planechase mechanic. So instead of using just one vanguard card, you roll a dice to change it. We haven't sorted out the fine points yet.
I don't know about other formats besides that, but in my store they do a cool game involving the picture from the card, in the magiccards.info page they have a page called "art game"
So it goes like this, the store clerk brings his laptop and maybe 6-8 players get together, and the point is to guess the name of the card just by seeing the image, and there are various difficulties, it gets good and friendly it's like pictionary or something.
And the winner takes a blind pick from a kind of pot with more or less 1000 cards, it can be from a common to a mythic (of course there are only like 5-6 mythics ) I think that they are Standard cards.
Highlander tourneys [the Old School - 60 card deck only variety] are always fun. Want to ramp it up? Have everybody bring 5 monocolored decks. Choose the decks randomly after pairings. Then take a page from THE Old School - winner gets a rare from the loser's trade binder [similar to Ante - it will probably never be anything awesome, but it adds to the fun]. WOOT!
I know it's not what the OP was asking for, but it looks like the rest of us have evolved this into a "cool alternate format/ways of playing ideas"...
Tower format... Easiest played with a freshly purchased Fat Pack, but can be done otherwise.
Suggested players: 2 or more, preferably 4ish, but shouldn't be exactly seven.. Open all the packs, remove the tokens (keep land in), shuffle the packs and the lands together and create one giant tower of cards.
Flip over the top seven cards so all can see. Each player starts with three cards, then takes a card from the seven revealed, then draws a card from the tower (deck). Once the seven cards are depleted, renew them from the top of the deck. You may choose to increase life totals (typically I do 30, rather than 20 for four player games).
I don't know if some people play this, but our playgroup often plays 5 Star Multiplayer because it can be very political. 5 players are required to play the game. The 2 people sitting next to you are allies meaning you cannot attack them or cast spells directly targeting them. You cannot block for them either. The two players across from you are your enemies. The winner is the first person to eliminate their 2 enemies. It's a very interesting twist as each other player shares an enemy and ally with you and it can be a "I scratch your back, you scratch mine."
I'm not sure about storewide events, but Momir basic is always fun. There's phone apps that make it real easy to do. The other thing we do is mental magic, which may be one of the funnest formats ever if you've been playing for more than a few years. A person at a store has an actual mental magic deck build with all the interesting mana costs. You can also just do it with booster packs. Everyone who signs up for fnm gets a pack, so you open it, shuffle it, and play mental magic with that. It's a good time passer, but not something a store can sponsor
Why wouldn't you be able to target them (unless the card says "target opponent")?
In classic star the turn jumps each other player (so that the turn always goes to an opponent.) This can be a bit confusing sometimes. If the two people sitting next to you are your opponents and the other two are not, then nothing changes, except that the turn order can be the usual clockwise order.
Since it's just casual, it's something our playgroup tweaked. The "can't target spells toward allies" rule was something to prevent allies from backstabbing one another. Burn spells, for example, can still be used on the board to prevent your ally from winning, but cannot Lightning Bolt your ally to remove them from the game. I can't remember the exact reason why someone did this, but he ended up winning the game as everyone else was on low life.

What about horrible drafting? You can do it with a cube or packs (cube might be best because it removes the money draft aspect). The goal is to draft 45 cards and make the worst pool you possibly can. Once everyone has drafted their pool you give the pool to another person chosen at random, they make a deck out of it, and you play however many rounds until a winner is chosen.
Here is a cool idea me and my friends have slowly been developing. Their is still a lot of tweaks and mechanics with life and deck rules but so far it seems to go well. So the basics of it is that you start out with 5 mana out of your deck on the battlefield. We kinda came up with it since at least one of us always got mana starved. As for life he have not been able to decide whether it should be the standard 20 or or raised a little higher to 25 or 30. With the deck limit it seems better to have a restricted 60 card deck like standard. We have also debated as to whether or not it should be higher like 75 or 80. Multiples of the cards in the deck I think should be 2 at the max but again everything is still up in the air. If you guys have any ideas for this or if you try it for yourselves and find something works better I would be more than happy to hear it.

I forget the term, but in my youth, there was a similar yet much more refined version of this. Five players sit in a hexagonal circle (i.e. the formation at the back of every Magic card), each plays mono-color, and it's a free-for-all. No alliances aside from politics.
- Chaos draft. 8 people, 24 boosters no duplicate boosters.
- EDH Emperor. A 3v3 style with lots of team strategy
- Chromatic. A style where you fight your enemy color or bargain with other colors to gain the upper hand (use monocolored decks).
I was thinking in a two player game you could draw from your opponent's deck every other turn and the same for them. Might be kind of a hassle since the decks would get mixed but if you have written down what cards are in the decks I don't think it would be too much of a hassle sorting them after the game is over. Or just use one deck between the two players to draw from. When the deck runs out shuffle the graveyards and keep playing.

A custom set/cube intended for league play with ante rules. I printed up some old powerful cards (2 for each color plus Lotus) with the added clause "...then, put ~ into your ante zone," with silly and punny names. You can take a sweet legacy or powered cube and switch the Ante Package in for variety every so often. I have a number of other custom ante-themed cards plus a bunch of old staple cards to fill out the cube. Its very silly but unfortunately you can't really use real ante cards cuz they're either Contract from Below or garbage... Jewelled Bird is OK.
Plane Constructed that they just did on the Magic twitch last night seems really fun.
Only thing I would add is being allowed to take cards from core sets that clearly represent your chosen plane as well.
