And then you look at the record sales numbers for the last two sets....
And Theros is also incredibly popular.
MTGO is already considered mostly a failure by WotC, and they've proven that a *lot* of people will play their game on paper. I don't think these digital only card games will ever compete on that level.
With games like Hearthstone, Solforge and Hex coming out MTG, and ESPECIALLY MTGO are in real trouble.
Unfortunately while wizards has tried, their are being completely outclassed in the digital world.
If they don't do something seriously better than what they've done within the next year or so I think MTG may become a second class TCG
I say this not because I'm trying to take down magic, but more because I love magic and have a bias to want to see it do amazing.
So your point seems to be that you think other online games will relegate Magic to second class status despite the fact that:
1) Sales for MTG have NEVER been higher
2) Tournament attendance has NEVER been higher
3) Card sales online and off have NEVER been greater.
Yeah, the MTG online client sucks and looks like it belongs with SimCity 2000 on a 486. But frankly, you don't appear to know anything about what you're talking about. Absolutely ridiculous.

Your prediction sounds familiar. I seem to remember similar things said about various games in 1995. None of those games are still around, magic is about 100 times bigger.
The only way MTG will ever fail is if WotC does it themselves. It's more popular than it has ever been, despite Maro's best efforts at destroying the game.
As someone who plays world of warcraft I must say. Hearthstone and from the looks of it Hex have a completely different target market. MTG is targeting the hardcore, in depth strategists. Whereas those other two games are making a more simple and accessible game. MTG isn't very threatened by these since i feel the good strategic people are going to prefer MTG. From people i've talked to hearthstone is a nice simple game, but nothing serious like MTG. On second look Hex is just a complete ripoff of MTG and will likely fail if it was in paper.
I would liken it to dota vs league of legends. League of legends is the newer, 'shinier' version of dota, but has less depth and aimed at a younger audience. While it may have a nice level of polish on it, the gameplay is inferior. Dota is the more complex predecessor where the best players play just like MTG will remain.
Sorry to those who I offended in this thread. Didn't mean to hit a sore spot.
I'll try to briefly elaborate on my position.
1) I feel like things are going more and more digital. Whereas a digital calendar was a huge fail in 1995, it's a huge success now. Whereas digital monopoly for your PC in 2000 was a huge fail, it's quite reasonable on iPad now.
2) I feel like the digital TCGs are LEAGUES above MTG in terms of gameplay. Now I concede that in competition and popularity magic is #1, however, these are some very successful, very smart people making the other games and if gameplay is great, that could change quickly. Especially with people like Blizzard behind the wheel.
3) Magic might be better, but that doesn't mean it will be the #1 game. Someone else used the example of League of Legends vs DotA2 vs HoN. Perfect example. LoL was (is?) the #1 played video game in the world. By comparison I think HoN and DotA are both better games. I don't want to see something like that happen to magic. Being #1 makes you the "go to" game for many people. Magic RELIES upon it's prevalence -- if it ever dropped in popularity and it became difficult to find people to play against... I'd worry it would really hurt Magic.
I guess I just worry about it and see these other "start-up" companies making games that I find great and ask, "Why isn't WotC doing something like this?".

Just bloggin a lil too I guess. =p
It's alot easier to get 10 fools to play your game then 10 good players. That's what a game like league of legends and hearthstone has going for it. But Hearthstone will always be a 'side project' and never competition for MTG.
I always wonder why people think they must have hit a sore spot when they say something stupid and people point out how it's obviously wrong.
The pointing out isn't what made me (or others that do the same) think that. It's the abusive and hostile language that is indicative of an emotional response. It's the aggressive attacking nature of the responses that make me feel that I've offended some with my OP. That's why I apologized.
I do think MTGO is one big missed opportunity, particularly adapting it to the tablet age. We might not even be talking about hex if WotC had their act together. But that missed chance isn't going to kill Paper anytime soon.

If they seem pretty easy to understand, it's because the rules of Hex are virtually identical to Magic.
Compare the following:
Yesterday to Evacuation.
Poca, the Conflagrater to Rakka Mar.
Onslaught to Overrun.
And don't forget Serra Angel with a miracle cost.
If YGO and pokemon failed to kill MTG, what makes you think these would?
You mean the record high sales and attendance of MtG?

I'm not worried.
Wow that particular example is blatant.
Anyway, I think we're pretty much done here unless OP wants to defend his horrible arguments.
And Plumeveil. (Although the pun is cute.)
And Rite of Replication.
And check out their innovative mechanics, such as trample, defender, flying, indestructible, lifelink, haste, hexproof, vigilance, and first strike!
Magic is huge right now. When you go to basically any Walmart, Target, Big K etc. what card game is there always the most of... MTG.

There's this thing called an homage...
People play magic because they love the game, not because it's convenient.

It was for me for a while. Damn that is a fine game.

This OP is like people who think the Kindle is going to stop books from being printed.
To be absolutely fair, the Kindle was a prime reason why Borders has been going under :/
