Argh I had a sleave break on me during game day... now I have 59 useless sleaves... this is the worst thing :S. my friend bought them online cheap somewhere I don't remember.. but they are the best sleaves I have ever had...had them a year and half :S.
I bought new ones but they came in packs of 50 :S...(I have had even larger sleave breaking problems with the other companies sleaves so I am trying these ones)
So I have 100 new ones now, 59 of the good sleaves and 59 damaged sleaves of another... and 200 thin plastic penny sleaves.
Now do I sleave my standard deck with 60 of the 100 sleaves and then have 40 useless sleaves?.. or do I sleave one of my casual decks with the 59 sleaves and tape the broken one for casual where no one cares that one is marked
Then use the 100 New ones for my EDH deck... currently sleaved in thin plastic.
I mean nobody should really play 61/41 cards in any sort of competitive event, and unless you manhandle the cards you should never break a sleeve, and the rate of mismanufactured sleeves is really low, and all things considered sleeves aren't even that expensive considering most of the time one card in a competitive deck is worth a pack of sleeves. So it's a total non-issue. I've never broken a sleeve on any of my Standard/legacy/EDH/limited sleeves, and some of them I've had for over two years.
Oh, I thought he was talking about playing a spell that is countering a spell with counters on it as it comes into play, but I see you guys were just discussing whether he was flashing a creature with flash in order to flash a flashback or just flashing a creature with flash but not needing flash in order to flashback a spell without flash.
Hmm, I think the dragon shields that come in a box of 100 actually come with a few extra, like 105 total, and kmcs come in a pack of 80 so you have extras if one breaks. I don't like getting cheep sleeves especially if the deck is worth a couple hundred dollars.
As for what to do with them... I use under 60 amount of sleeves for draft deck purposes.
I have ended up with a lot of odd sleaves over the years because of picking up singles so I just use them for tokens or PW emblems. You can also use them for sleaving your commander so it's easier to spot them when you first grab your deck.
I'm also in the process of switching all my decks over to Ultra Pro matte black sleaves so it's not a problem if one gets damaged. We also have a very small play group and it's not hard to learn which decks are in which sleaves so soon they will all be the same.

I have a habit of sleeving up every card I want to trade to keep them in as good condition as possible, so old cracking, peeling, sleeves just go to that.
Generally my trade binder is the graveyard for abused and misplaced sleeves. If there are 40-45 Ill use them for limited, but often ill just buy a new 50 pack for that.
Turn them into draft sleeves is the only thing you can do. You can't buy additional sleeves of the same color as others have suggested since the sheen on the weared ones look drastically different from the new.
If you use the same sleeves for SB cards and don't change sleeves when sideboarding, over time the maindeck sleeves will get more wear than the SB ones. In other words, the sideboard cards will become marked.
If you use the same sleeves for SB cards and don't change sleeves when sideboarding, over time the maindeck sleeves will get more wear than the SB ones. In other words, the sideboard cards will become marked.
You'll also tell your opponent exactly how many cards you're changing.
And it makes it so that your main deck sleeves receive greater wear from pulling cards in/out.
It increases the likelihood of a card receiving accidental damage.
-----
To all the people who keep sleeves for longer than a year, I really have to wonder; how often do you play?
I've never had sleeves last more than a couple months. I've had 3 month old sleeves be disqualifiable in a tournament setting for top 8.
Well, my cube once saved an orphan puppy from a burning building. Then it went home to make love to the prom queen in a consensual fashion. It also regularly finds five dollars in its jacket pocket.
The worst is when a sleeve company sells sleeves in packs of 50, and each pack, despite being the same color, is different in some way.
KMC and Player's choice are not guilty of this. Dragon Shield and Ultra Pro are.
There was one time I used Ultra Pro sleeves, and I can totally tell which of the 10 cards came from a different sleeve pack.
What KMC and Player's choice are guilty of is this: If one sleeve collects too much dust, or becomes dirty, because you left it in the open for so long, with that one card sitting on top, that one card sleeve will look different from the rest.
It also does stink that after using the same sleeves for so long, and one breaks, you have to toss all 60 sleeves just because 59 will look worn, and 1 would look new.
Sleeves are supposed to protect against marked cards, but it would defeat the purpose if sleeves themselves get marked too.
Unless I find someone who has the exact same sleeve and wouldn't mind giving me one, I'll just use them to sleeve up nice cards in my trade binder. To avoid this, I just usually buy the 100 pack of sleeves in basic solid colors (black, blue, etc.) instead of anything fancy.
I generally use old sleeves/colors that I don't have enough of for extra cards that I might want to use later. I keep my crappy cards in one of those long white 900 count boxes, penny sleeve cards that seem interesting, and put good cards into better worn out sleeves. Usually when I buy sleeves I buy 3 packs of 100 of the same color so I have enough for 5 regular decks with no leftovers. My friends do this as well, and most of the time I just trade 60 for 60 of a different color with friends just for variety.
My cube uses around 2500. 720 cards and 100 of each basic, double sleeved. Then add in tokens. (Single sleeved, but sleeved).
This is the reason there's 4 boxes of dragon shields from the same lot and a box of perfect fits chilling in the closet. Sleeves break.
Using them for your limited decks is probably the best suggestion, followed by sleeving up trade stock or tokens.
I have about 50 thin plastic penny sleaves for drafting. Although sometimes there isn't enough time to sleave the draft deck before the first round.
I bought ultra pro sleaves and they just all broke. I intended to sleave my EDH deck with them but I broke one on the first shuffle then one pretty much every time since.
Dragon shield is twice the price of other sleaves. And I have sleaved up decks worth less than a pack of them. Id rather buy a planeswalker.
Huh? Trade binders have sleaves you put them in a sleave it is just attached to the binder. Why would you need another sleave?
Yeah, sleeve quantity packaging is kinda hard to fit with Magic decks.
Based on experience, what seems to work best is: 4 packs of the same 50 sleeves. With that, I break it down as such:
60 sleeves for a 60-card deck (sleeve SB in & out) x 2 = 120
11x of each basic land type for draft = 55
25 cards for your 40-card draft or sealed deck (you won't go over 25 nonlands in a 40-card deck, anyway) - 25
That totals up to a nice 200. Alternatively you can go 75-75 for 2 normal decks + SB if you can make sure that your sleeves won't looked marked, and the 50 leftover for draft. I like having sleeved lands on hand, though, as it allows me to spend more time analyzing the best deck to put together/playtest a draft deck.
EDIT: Wait, what, Ultra Pro being fragile? I do the usual shuffles (riffle, pile, mash) and these have rarely happened. I've been playing since Darksteel, and I've gone through just four sets of their standard-colored sleeves. I mean, I don't expect them to withstand the test of time but considering their price I still think you get what you pay for.

Some people treat their cards a little more violently than some of us, and they also happen to have big mouths and talk about how hard they smash their cards together and call it shuffling. I wouldnt support Ultra Pro around here, people will call you a liar and many assortments of other unsavory things.
