I'm traveling this weekend with my girlfriend to visit her family. We were planning to play gameday at her local shop on Saturday so I messaged the shop owner on Facebook (we've been there before a few times) to ask when it was. He responded by telling me the time and entry fee but also said that you had to have a minimum of 10 Theros cards in your deck/sideboard to play. This is the DCI sponsored gameday and I was under the impression that the DCI is pretty straightforward on how their sponsored events are to be conducted and that stipulation is not (and has never, as far as I've played) been a requirement. Am I incorrect?
Long, long ago Wizards ran a Pro Tour in which players had to have five cards from each legal set. This was because Homelands had just come out and if they didn't have that requirement, no cards from Homelands would have been played.
There is no longer any such requirement. As long as your deck (including sideboard) consists solely of cards printed in Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, Dragon's Maze, Magic 2014 and Theros, you can play it at the Theros Game Day.

There are few men in this Parliament for whom I have greater respect than the leader of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. I admire him in my heart, because time and again he has had the courage to say what lays on his conscience, regardless of what the world might think of him. A man of that calibre is an ornament to any Parliament.

Use 10 theros basic lands if you are not using any theros stuff, and if they give you crap about it tell them that DCI rules overrule whatever stupid house rules they are trying to get away with.
You are a guest at a magic shop your rarely attend, I don't see what the problem is here. Perhaps the stipulation was added to create a more leveled playing field because having 10 random cards can seriously damage a tier 1 deck's design. Oh well, if you don't like it, don't play. But those are my thoughts from an EDH player who loves house rules and changes to deck design on the spot as it encourages creativity.

I only learned one thing in kindergarten: The bigger you were, the less you had to share!

Enjoy your house rules and whatever you want where it belongs, at home. Messing with things like this then sanctioning it with DCI is a big no no.

You might want to do a Theros count on the high end decks out there. This does nothing to level the playing field, if anything it makes it worse by weakening some higher tier decks, but most are unafected.
Drive the point home by having 10 Homelands cards in your deck.
That would be quite the feat, considering there are no cards printed in Homelands currently legal in Standard.

I wasn't aware of how much the DCI dictates how a tournament has to be done. I meant no disrespect but sometimes certain stores read things differently in the rules and if no one has said anything in the past they have no reason to believe their methods are not allowed.

I remember something about 10 cards in deck for a promo (?).
But, mainly, at Scars or MBS gameday there was a thing where you had to use 10 Mirrodin aligned cards or 10 Phyrexian aligned cards to get a button or something? I don't remember, I just remember having the button cause a flat tire on the way back from a tournament in a different state.
Anyway, I'm sure the store owner's just confused about some things, and I don't think he thinks it's a 'house rule'.
