I wasn't playing Magic when Mutavault came out in Morningtide. In light of it being reprinted in M14, can my fellow forum users provide some insight into how its used and what combos it can utilize?
Tap a land for mana, use said mana to animate mutavault. It can now attack/block. If your opponent isint paying attention, it can be used to often take them by suprise to give you an advantage.
Being it is every creature type, it can do all the above with the added benefits of tribal decks. (buffs, landwalk, triggers etc)
I believe its main use is in Merfolk decks, as their tribal deck is basically all Lords, making Mutavault into a 4/4 or 5/5 when animated.
I did not play when it was legal in standard, but I would think a control-style deck would be the most likely candidate to use it right now. It probably wont have much impact in the current standard, as it isn't going to do much against AoS, Resto Angel, Thragtusk and Thundermaw.
As said already, it's just like any other man land. It has some very interestint interactions though since it's a changeling and counts as all creature types. One of the most interesting ways to use it was a way of adjusting the amount of faeries you controlled when you casted spellstutter sprite to counter a spell. You can tap the mutavault to activate itself which is a pretty useful ability. On top of that, it is extremely beneficial with any lord effect (except for master of etherium's lord effect).
The fact it has all creature types makes it very versatile. It can count towards the 5 vampires you need for Bloodline Keeper and the two for a Feast of Blood. It's a Faerie, so it helps out for Spellstutter Sprite. It's a Giant, so it qualifies for Giant's Ire, etc.
Basically you know how Glint Hawk and occasionally Rakdos Keyrune saw play because they dodge sorcery-speed removal. Well, this is like that, except there's next to no opportunity cost to play it, because its a land. Basically if you're a 2 color deck that isn't using something like Geralf's Messenger, throw 4 of these in and you'll never get flooded.
Modern D&T likes it for it's interaction with Blade Splicer. To be honest, however, it is a cheap to activate manland that can be put in any color deck so that alone makes it good- the creature type aspect makes it great.
Lot of people talked about merfolks (it was also used with Faeries in lorwyn), but before M13 rotation, I could see it in an Mono-G Elf build with the new Garruk andCraterhoof Behemoth maybe.

Interesting. I hadn't considered any of those points, especially the things about Mutavault's interaction with tribal decks. I guess I'll have to get one for my merfolk EDH deck.
It'll see play in control decks for sure, especially once stuff like nephalia drownyard rotates. Once that happens, there won't really be any tribal either, unless theros happens to be so. And let's all hope that sliver's aren't constructed worthy. It's an extra creature when you need it, and mana early on. Most decks can use it, and probably will, once innistrad is gone.
Lord of Atlantis gives +1/+1 to other Merfolk. When mutavault is activated into a creature, it too will received the bonus.

nope slivers are going to suck arse
Mutavault is an excellent use of spare mana, generally in tribal decks. As far as i know, it sees play in fairies and merfolk mostly
