I just buy cards, I don't have the time to haggle over 1$ or so in junk rares most of the time. I sell cards, and I buy cards. I can't be bothered with the trading dance.
I would love to play a game of EDH with you, but this gentleman is still flipping through my book for 1$ in cards ....
To echo what others have said, I've stopped trading pretty much entirely. Mainly because i find that 90% of people will always find a reason why my card X is worth less than their card Y. How many times have I heard:
disclaimer: Not a scenario where trades are standard for legacy or vice versa, talking about legacy->legacy or standard->standard
Them: "Well, X card may be listed at $15, but I really only value it at $10"
Me: "..."
Me: *walks away*
A guy the other day tried to trade his Rishadan Port to me at a value of $70. Seventy. So now I just pretty much eBay my stuff or sell to locals at a price that beats the internet.
Trading is a pain. A lot of folks want legacy staples but act like Im crazy for wanting full value. Sorry, it has to be that way, because the cards wont see circulation again. So, I don't bother. Trading for casual stuff is more fun because those players aren't looking to beat you or complain when I wont trade force of will for equal value in standard cards. Newsflash, a bunch of standard whatever doesn't equate a force that wont see reprint ever. Non legacy folks have to understand that.

I feel the same. The only way I get value out of trading is if I value my time at $0.
I'm a married father and get one night a week to play MTG. I have no desire to spend it flipping through binders and looking up cards on smartphones all to get a $10 card. I'll just spend the $10 and buy it.
I do keep a trade binder but it's really more a "rare" binder. Since I just buy the cards I want I'm not usually looking for any card to trade, and every few months when the binder gets full I wholesale it all to SCG for trade value.
I used to trade reasonably often when I first started playing. Of course, I never really thought about the monetary value of cards that much back then.
I don't trade anymore though. My friends who play get their cards mainly from me, so they don't have any cards I want to trade for. I traded with someone (who I later found out was a giant shark) at my LGS a year ago but got such a bad vibe afterwards I gave up on trading there. If I found a store with a good community, I would get back into trading.
For now I'm just content to get my cards online. I know it's a big loss to not get rid of standard staples before rotation, but at my LGS it's hard to trade cards about to rotate for a reasonable price. The regulars there use their "own pricing system" (i.e. greatly overvalue their cards, greatly undervalue your cards), so it's not possible to get any worthwhile trades done anyways.

Focused on limited for now. Occasionally play some standard/modern as well.

I mean if he was willing to equally give you like 20$ on Jace, Architect of Thought then he's just going by SCG prices and not ripping you off... But if he inversely asked for the Jaces at 12$ he's doing something shady.
I do agree though, I hate the people who say "But I value it at X instead of Y." It's one thing to give me a low ball offer and admit it's such, it's another to outright claim you have some kind of different value system than any that exist.
When I first started, I traded extensively. That was how I got nearly all of my stuff. But now, most players, like myself do most of their business online, which is much easier than trading.
Trading for my area has become more of a ritual than a method of acquiring cards. I haven't been involved in a multi-card or high value trade in ages. Most of the time, its trading some of the random 1-3 dollar rares I got floating around my binder for the same value. Nothing major anymore.
I think, at least in my experience, that most people just get the cards they need and don't really worry as much about having extras for trades.

I find that interesting, because when I tell someone "I only value something X" either because I just want it for future trade bait or to upgrade an EDH deck or something, it is very much my way of saying "Here is a offer lower then what online stores say." and admitting it as such.
This most often comes in to play when I have some Legacy or Modern card that someone wants, and they want to trade me something currently in print.

I use to be very active. I let people know how I dealt with trading and now most come to me and ask if I have something they are in need of. I have no problem giving on one trade, knowing I will get it back at a later date.
I have no problem with most dealer/traders as long as they are up front about how and what they are doing. I usually carry around some played uncommons and commons along with foils these guys love to trade for. I get what I want, they get something they can resell. Everyone is happy at the end of the night.

That seems like a really weird way to phrase things though. I think there's a difference between saying "I'll trade this card, but I want a good deal on it, so would you be willing to do these cards at X instead of Y." and saying "I value it at X."
The big difference in the two for me is that in the first there's a context as to why the value is modified, such as the quality of items being traded being uneven (Standard for Legacy stuff) or simply one person wanting to hold onto something unless the right price is named. The second version just seems like there is a straight undervaluing of a product for no particular reason, it's just such a flat statement...
I mean sure, if you said "I only value Jace, AoT at 10$ because SCG is the only place asking for 20$ while every other store wants 10$" then that's perfectly fine, there's a reason there. The same goes for asking to get value in a trade, such as "I value Jace, AoT at 8$, because you know it's a dual land and I don't really need Jaces right now, but if you're willing to do that then I'll take it."
Though when you just say "I value your Jace, AoT at 8$." as a flat statement it's kind of weird.
I trade fairly little. I maintain a binder. When I do trade, unless they want a card worth a decent drop in the bucket, it usually is more of a I need this card, you need this card basis, rather than worrying that I might be trading a 4 dollar rare for a 2 dollar rare. Of course, since I make sure to know what my LGS has in stock as far as singles go, if I can buy it cheaper than a trade value, I'm going to do that instead.

Been playing Magic for 2 years.
Currently play in Modern with a u/w Control deck.
We have a very active trade community here. Unfortunately my trade binder is down to mostly junk stuff or things too expensive to get rid of cheaply. I buy things online after the fact of trading. No one has what I want or we can't make I deal I just go buy it.
I pretty much only trade on MTGS anymore. I've got mostly niche stuff and only really want niche stuff, so it's just easier to work a deal out on here.
I'm flexible with value of cards and I can make trades of equivalent values to help people out but more often than not I am only trading for Legacy wants or rare/obscure cards for personal collection purposes.

I see your point. It is the lack of supplying a logical reason that comes across poorly. I imagine in some cases it is implied, but its no trouble to me to explain my reasoning. Who knows, might make some trades go smoother.

If it's implied, then it's fine... I'm really only objecting to the rare cases in which the person for no reason is stating your cards are worth less than the price guide you're using and their cards are worth more.
I just started trading after a 2-3 month hiatus. Trading is tough when you are new b/c the sharks are out there. As you become more familiar it gets easier.
For me it's all about vibe. If your pushy/demanding I am likely not going to trade. Also, once you get the cards you really want, trading naturally declines a bit.
I am not really a collector per se, plus this is a bad hobby to "invest" in. Get the cards you want, stay away from cracking packs/boxes and you should need very few cards once you have your decks built.
Large collections are cool and all, but its always sad when cards just sit in binders.
I stopped years ago. If an acquaintance (say a friend of my son's) comes to me looking for something I will think about the trade, but it is not something I bother with much. The only trading I have done in the last six months is on Puca Trade, which I highly recommend.
I tend to "trade" to get new kids who are unsure if they want to play/keep playing magic. It's more gifting than trading but I like seeing younger faces join the game or get into formats they otherwise couldn't. This is also why I never could work at a games store.
No. I find trading is so much of a hustle and hassle that I would much rather just buy my card and hold onto the card I would normally trade. I may have a use for it later, or I might not. If not, someone will eventually come across it on me and offer me what I want. Either way, I don't make the effort.
I used to trade alot when I was a kid. Now that's I got money I'd rather just buy the cards online. They're not over valued by their owners, alot less hassle and bad blood and you can always get what you need.

To be fair Rishadan Port is like 55$ on TCG and it's actually listed as 70$ on SCG ( http://sales.starcitygames.com/search.php?substring=Rishadan+Port&t_all=All&start_date=2010-01-29&end_date=2012-04-22&order_1=finish&limit=25&action=Show%2BDecks&card_qty[1]=1&auto=Y )
