I use a small swiss backpack. Something with enough pockets to hold a few decks, dice, paper, pens, and some random trades or loose cards. Just some lightweight bag that fits you best is the best thing to get. Depends on your body size and type too.
I have a kipling seoul that can safely store my laptop and binder altogether. It's made of a very resistant fabric, I've had it for years and it still looks brand new.
I bought a batman backpack at Target for one dollar and I am in love with it. I always carry around a playmat, two monster binders, one three ring binder, a notebook, two decks, dice, pens, and my "fun" tokens. Plus I have room to spare. I couldn't be happier with my backpack.
heh i am overkill for backpacks ... i have a Maxpedition Condor II and an 5.11 Rush 24 that i alternate between... but if i do not feel like lugging everything with me other then a few decks and a small binder i go for my Hazard 4 Kato
It should be:
Lightweight
have room for what you need
attached to your body at all times.
Don't get one too big as it will encourage you to bring crap you don't need, which will make your pack heavy, and will mean you will want to set it down somewhere. Once that happens you are asking for theft. I use a small Timbuk 2 messenger bag no bigger than a large purse, and when it is not over my shoulder it is at my feet with a tether around my ankle. It is sad that I have to be so cautious, but theft is bred from opportunity.
I'll stand by Wenger/Swiss Gear as I've owned a couple (for general backpack use).
I also agree with the poster who said to not go too big. Keep it smaller/reasonably sized. You want something that is easy to keep on/near you at all times and not carry the world in it - I recommend looking at messenger style bags.
I just use my backpack I used in highschool (about 10 years ago now) that I got from staples for like $30. It's worn, but an expensive, brand new looking bag is a sign that thieves look for.
I've got a black Columbia backpack that can snugly hold a card binder in the back compartment and a stack of decks, playmat and bag of dice in the front compartment. Plus there's a small front pouch for extra goodies and another one at the top if I need to cram in one more deck! I use it for college supplies and Magic alike.

I use a canvas bag put out by Games Workshop a while ago, it was made for gamers, and has dice pouches, a place for counters, ect, and has been through about four years of constant use and abuse with me, and only needed one repair.
I tried a casual google search and couldn't find much on it now, but I do know that the company that made it made a non-Warhammer model, and likely still sells it.

I use a Hazard 4 Evac Plan-B for pretty much every event. I never trade, so I dont have to worry about binders on site and the bag holds everything I need for the day (decks, pens, notebook, dice, tokens, snacks, etc).
The last five backpacks I've owned have all been from my local Army Surplus store. They're big, durable, have lots of compartments, and offer the best quality to price ratio I can find. In all honestly, I'll probably never buy a bag from anywhere else ever again.
Anyhow, the best I can come up with myself is a game in the top 8 of a PTQ back during Urza block in which we were starting game 3 with time already expired, so the tiebreaker rule was that whoever had more life after 3 turns would win. And I lost to... healing salve.
I use a Samsonite Vizair Laptop bag for my Magic cards. It holds massive quantities of stuff (multiple deckboxes, binder, card storage box) and is comfortable to wear for long periods of time. It is on the bulky side though.

Focused on limited for now. Occasionally play some standard/modern as well.
national guard backpacks you can get from the recruiting stations in the us. they have nice pockets fro storing dice, pens and paper, as well as fat pack boxes. and you can store 2 to 3 boxes in it with a large trade binder. and you they have a secret compartment under the bag next to your back where you can store your value card binder, and its hard to even see if you dont know about it.
and it has a spot on the strap (meant for knives or flashlight) to store a phone or ipod.... and you can store snacks and water no problem without fear of spillage. and they are pretty light weight.
Ive been using the same Jansport backpack for going on 10 years now. This pack has been to more conventions and tourneys than most people ever get to go to. I doubt that they still make this one, but the brand is decent at least.

Boogaloos has some great backpacks that are both large and comfortable, but expensive:-//
My previous schoolbag worked very well, it was a cheap Quicksilver bag. Relatively large, but not too bulky and comfortable, you can easily adjust the belt. This is my backpack that I have used for about 3 years. It ended when it started to crack at the bottom of my lunch. The cooking of the belt disappeared and hurt my shoulder.
