People that say this are overly hard on their sleeves. I have tons of Ultra Pro sleeves, ive only ever split 1, and it wasnt even from shuffling.
This is false - I've split them on two different occasions from shuffling, and neither was any harder than I've shuffled normal Ultra Pro Sleeves, KMC or Dragon Shields in the past.
Once you've shuffled a deck sleeved in dragonshields, its pretty hard to then shuffle a deck sleeved in ultrapros without splitting a sleeve.
With dragonshields you can shuffle the deck way faster without ever worrying about damaging the cards.
With ultrapros you have to handle them more carefully to avoid splitting them open.
Really, this is sort of like saying a cardboard box is just as durable as a steel one as long as you are careful with it.
This is so true. Just over a week ago I dusted off my Modern Merfolk deck which has been in regular Ultra Pro sleeves. It's my only deck with those, everything else is in Dragon Shields or KMC Matte sleeves. After about 40 seconds of shuffling my deck, I split 5 sleeves.

I bought a pack of Dragon Shields and a pack of Ultra Pro with some MTG art on them around a year ago. The Dragon Shields were for my EDH and the Ultra Pro was for my Modern deck. Not a single Dragon Shield sleeve has split so far. None of them have so much as a few scratches on them.
The Ultra Pro sleeves fared much worse. I lost close to 10 sleeves that have split and the majority of them have dented and scratched the clear protective plastic. I shuffle them the same way, pile shuffle, and have had a few Ultra Pros sleeves split this way. I have yet to try KMC sleeves, but I've only heard good things from them.

Make sure you grab the KMC "HYPERS" as those are giving Dragon Shield a run for their money as best sleeves ever.
So after a few weeks with the KMC Hyper Mattes, they are by far the greatest sleeves on the market. Dragonshields are in second place, but are too hard and sharp for my liking.
Ultra Pro (any of their lines) is awful. I was at a GPT a few months back, my deck sleeved in brand new Ultra Pro Mattes - and I almost got DQ'd from the tournament because my opponent (who was a judge((luckily he was also a friend so let me off))) said to me that he could see I had a Huntmaster of the Fells in my hand because he could see the Ravager of the Fells through the back of the sleeves.
I don't mean to call yiou dishonest, but I really find that hard to believe. I have a bunch of UP mattes and while they are not my favorite sleeves, I cannot see how you would be able to see through them. Granted, I am not under the same glare that you might be in some card shops, but I just did a test with a stack of a dozen cards (4 different double-sided cards including Huntmaster) using both black and blue UP mattes and I could not tell whether the card was single sided or double sided.
I also must just be gentle on sleeves (as I said I have had the same UP for more than 10 years), but between KMC (glossy black, blue, and Super Blue), KMC matte, Dragon Shields, Ultra-Pro Matte, and Ultra-Pro with images on the back, the only kind that has split significantly more than the others are the Ultra-Pro with images on the back. I shuffle by splitting the deck into two equal piles, then mashing them together using the bottom corner of one pile meeting the bottom third of the other pile. I do it rapidly and firmly, and the only sleeves I end up tossing are ones that get scratched a bunch- which is very hard to do with Ultra-Pro Matte sleeves.
I consider them to be the least ideal of the three manufacturers, but y'all are making them sound like they are garbage, which I have only found true of the ones with images on the back.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who hasn't had problems with Ultra Pro. Yes, they may not be the highest quality ever but they sure aren't the total garbage everyone is making them out to be. I've literally never had one split and I mash shuffle as much as the next guy.
Regarding seeing through the back of Ultra Pros I've noticed that anything other then black can be seen through slightly. Especially white. For this reason I only use the black sleeves when I buy Ultra Pro.

I have been contemplating trying out double sleeving with super mats for my edh decks, as they run some expensive cards. My issue with ultra pro mats are that they are very inconsistent with the quality control - I've boughten two different red mats that are different in length. I have had a couple split as well. Overall I do like them though. My main reason for wanting to double sleeve is that I always notice little flecks of debri in the sleeves. I do run some foils that I notice slide around a bit.
My concern is how big the tower of 100 cards would be. I saw a 60 card legacy deck in them this weekend which was quite tall. What are your experiences with this? Is a stack of 100 constantly falling over? Do they fit int the ultra pro hard tower case (the one with the dice compartment on bottom)? Thanks

I double sleeve my EDH decks. It does make them a bit bigger, but not terribly so. It does not fall over if you use KMC or Draginshield for the outer. There a link in my sig to a video with details on double-sleeving, btw.
Also, the new Ultra Pro SATIn Tower is made to hold a 100 card double-sleeved deck. It's a really neat EDH storage box for only about 8-10 bucks.

That's what I wanted to hear - thanks :). I will be picking up some to give them a go.
FYI, I picked up the KMC HYPER Matte + KMC perfect fit that everyone's been raving about these past few threads.
Whoever said it shuffles like butter, he is exactly right. I couldn't be happier with these sleeves - only downside I can think of is that they are only offered in two colors. These are definitely my sleeves of choice for any tournament type deck.
That being said, I still defer to Dragon shields for any decks that don't see heavy play/shuffling. Those things are still great.

Guess what? I just found out KMC is coming out with HYPER Mattes in different colors. Woo. Such a fan of these. "Shuffles Like Butter" should be on the packaging.

Do you know the release date?
Also, I have one small problem with the hyper mattes. The top corners seem to split a little more than the regulars. I've split very few KMC mattes, but I split two hypers during a tourney. Could be because the sleeves are shorter?
I can totally understand game art, fantasy art... even sci-fi art for card sleeves, but what I saw from Ultra Pro the other day made me laugh and wonder what grade of hydroponic wowee-zowee herb they're smoking: GRUMPY CAT sleeves? Oh Lord, please, oh mighty Lord PLEASE tell me why Grumpy Cat is on the back of a sleeve...

So I scanned a bunch of pages of the thread and really didn't see anyone talking about Ultra-Pro Matte sleeves, are these any good?

If you don't want users pointing out a fallacy in an absolute claim, then don't make absolute claims that you only assume are true. Many, many users have posted with negative experiences using Ultra Pro Matte Sleeves who have specifically said they were not being harder on them than normal. It's a service to tell other people of bad experiences with a product, instead of telling them something else based on an assumption so they go spend their money on a faulty product.
If you're going to pass off an untested theory as a fact, then don't be surprised when someone calls it out as being wrong. It's not harassment, it's stopping the spread of misinformation.

They have a really nice feel when shuffling, and are affordable, but they are the most likely to split. Also, the Ultra Pro Mattes have a "anti-glare" front that is kind of...glazed...and it makes the card a little dimmer to view. Foils are not as shiny (if at all) in the Ultra Pro Mattes.
The new KMC "HYPER" Mattes have the same great feel but don't split as easily and don't have the anti-glare front.
This is so true. I wanted to try them as they are a bit cheaper than KMCs, but man the difference. They seem smaller, the cards tend to warp in them as they are way too tight. I was so disappointed I threw them to the bin
I had this issue, too, and at first it definitely bugged me a lot, but if you don't mind leaving them in there they stretch out, and your cards won't be bowed/warped.

Sure, each users end result may vary, like so many of you that beat your cards together as hard as you can without thinking about it. By saying my claim is false and then saying that absolutely that your claim is correct is absurd. Ive been stating nothing but my personal experience, you saying that I am lying about my personal experience with several dozen packs of sleeves feels like a personal attack, from a mod no less.

Some will say that they split easier than other single color sleeves, but I have never found this to be the case to any significant degree. They are certainly not as great as KMC, but they are not that much worse than Dragonshields. The one area that they excel in is that the surface is the most scratch resistant I have ever found (have not tried ultra-matte). After hundreds (if not more) of shuffles all of mine have the same finish they came out of the package with. If I was getting a set of sleeves for a long tournament I am almost certain that is what I would get, especially since I apparently do not shuffle them in such a way as to split them as often as other people do.
I had this issue, too, and at first it definitely bugged me a lot, but if you don't mind leaving them in there they stretch out, and your cards won't be bowed/warped.
I also found that once you get them in if you give the sleeve a little slip back and forth (right to left) they settle in flatter. The one great thing about them is that you can double sleeve them bottom to top very easily- they just slip in without shifting in the sleeve.
Has anyone found a store in Europe that sells the hyper matte sleeves? Have been googling but without any luck. I'ld really like to try them out but I'ld have to pay more for shipping costs than for the sleeves themselves
