did anyone else catch sunday's episode of family guy? this may have been a repeat, but i hadn't seen it before and thought this was worth mentioning here.
for those of you who don't want to read it, i'll put it in spoiler tags.
peter mentions something about a bunch of virgins waiting in heaven and then it cuts to a scene a bunch of "geeky" guys behind computers in heaven. one of the "geeks" speaks up and says, "we're playing magic: the gathering."
it may have been a bit different from that, but you get the general idea there. i, personally, found this hilarious. i was just wondering what your thoughts on it were and if any of you would be offended by something like that.

i am a self proclaimed geek. i can't deny it. i collect star wars toys. i love sci fi and fantasy. i play magic. i have over 2000 comic books. i mean... let's just be honest. i don't really like the negative connotation that goes along w/ it. i thought the skit from family guy was funny, but it can sometimes be annoying that everyone assumes that all magic or d&d players or star wars fans wear glasses w/ tape on them and always wear button ups w/ a pocket protector.
and i totally aspire to become a level nine magic player one day. that would be awesome!
Just for the record, it was the latest episode of the series, and the quote was refering to...
...the virgins that supposedly wait in heaven for suicide bombers. After one of them says "We're playing Magic: the Gathering," the suicide bomber standing at the pearly gates screams "Osamaaaa!" in despair.

"...because without beer, things do not seem to go as well."
That was completely hilarious. My mife is constanly calling me a nerd for playing Magic. She calls them "Nerd Cards". She doesn't like Family Guy and almost never watches it, but she was watching with me and thought that it was funny enough to TiVO.
I loved it!

Oh wow. I don't think the outside world knows what Magic is so I don't think they'd get it. I'm happy to see Magic in pop culture though. This game needs a whole lot more attention. BTW, I don't find this game too nerdy. It's fared better than D&D at least.
I'm pretty sure the Simpsons already had a MTG reference... it was with the Comic Shop guy... he was playing or something. It's vague and I could have made it up.
Anybody remember watching Home Improvement back in the day and there were oversized Magic cards on the wall of the boy's room?
When Seth Rogan hosted Saturday Night Live he made a reference to magic in his opening monologue, it was a joke list of things he wanted to do when he was famous that he wrote when he was 12 and one of them was "Get every magic the gathering card"
Thats awesome dude.Seth rules. He must play...I wonder if hes anygood...
Any ways to find out?

that's awesome. that's exactly what i would do if i were famous. i'd have THE collection.
Hmm, I wonder how expensive it would be to buy a playset of every card?
Actually, it's good that these people do it too, gets the word out about our hobby
If I am ever famous, I promise I will endorse M:TG
you wouldn't really a need a playset of every card. there are cards that you would probably only need 1 of. like a lotus, the moxen, etc. but yeah, it would definitely be freakin sweet to have any card you needed for whatever deck you wanted to build. how cool would it be to be able to just order a playset of all the cards in a new set on it's release date?
That would be filthy expensive dude...could you even DO that technically?Who could you buy a playset of every card in a set from as soon as its released?I dont know of anyone...not even ebay...

you can normally get playsets of at least commons/uncommons on release date from sites like starcity. they offer those kinds of deals. and rares could probably come later. but either way... that'd be awesome!
I've seen Magic in another sitcom called Still Standing. They didn't call it Magic though. It was supposed to be some other game, but I forget the name. However, at one point in the episode, two of the people were playing the game and I could make out the familiar Magic logo on some of the cards. It was funny, yet sad at the same time because the guys playing had to dress up like wizards and such.
for those of you who don't want to read it, i'll put it in spoiler tags.

i remember that. king of queens is one of my favorite shows. i think they just did it to be silly instead of slamming on regular/professional players.
I admit, I am a geek. As long as it isn't excessive or anything, I'll laugh at a good joke.

I found that extremely odd when he said that too, and so inaccurate.
