It was already an unusually high price when he was type 2 legal, but his going price is even higher now.
Most cards don't reach $20 in price and even those drop to a couple bucks after they leave type 2.
I know this is a good card, but why are people still paying so much for a card that is only usable for fun (I'm assuming there aren't many places that do vintage/ legacy since there are zero that do within 100 miles of the highly populated place I live).
First, he's the best planeswalker by far. Its not even close.
Second, he is used in multiple decks for Legacy, typically as a 4 of.
Lastly, Modern is picking up steam and people are picking up copies because if it gets unbanned in Modern the price is going to be astronomical and be head and shoulders above all other cards until something as power as made. Think Tarmogoyf or duals are expensive right now? An unbanned Jace would easily double in price due to demand in both formats.
One thing is that there really isn't a whole ton of him out there, on account of his being a Mythic in a small set that went out of print pretty quickly.
Another thing is that his price was so high while he was in standard, and it's reasonable to assume that some not-insubstantial fraction of the Magic playing population bought him when he was high. As it turns out, I'm doing some economic research right now on reference-dependent utility, and an important takeaway is that despite traditional economic notions of sunk costs, different models of utility show that people really don't like it when they experience losses relative to their current or expected position (e.g. selling their cards for less than what they paid for them.)

Personally I think at least a part of it is a bit like inertia.
When cards reach a certain price point and visibility, it becomes more difficult for them to decrease in price. Its a natural reflex to be irrationally afraid of "getting screwed". That feeling when you sell at just the wrong moment, and if you had just held on a little bit longer maybe your investment would have been worth even more.
This can hold up a lot of the supply outside of the market and ends up artificially inflating the price even more than it should be.
More people play legacy than you're giving credit for. There's a 20 or so person legacy metagame in my area, and it's by no means a large metro area. Not to mention the SCG Legacy Opens.
Also, it's THE planeswalker. "Collecting all the planeswalkers" is a pretty common card collection, and JTMS is the Black Lotus of planeswalker collections.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.

It's not at all only usable for fun, just because you don't play Legacy/Vintage doesn't mean other people don't.
Jace is really good in Vintage and people still play him all the time.
Worldwake also had the unfortunate spot as being the last set in a fairly unpopular limited format that was followed up by an extremely popular limited format.
Not a whole lot of Worldwake was opened, is what I'm saying.

Uh... Worldwake was the second set in the block. It was followed up by ROE.

But it was the last set in the block for terms of drafting. RoE was drafted independently so there were 3 draft formats in the block: ZEN ZEN ZEN, ZEN ZEN WWK, ROE ROE ROE. As such very little Worldwake was drafted comparatively speaking.

um legacy. A shop in my area regularly pulls in 20-40 people for monthly legacy tournaments, and has been know to have to turn people away because of lack of seats (they're able to accommodate 62 max).
Honestly, Jace is pretty much THE card to have if you play blue. If you have Jace and FOW in Legacy you are pretty much in the door for most Blue game plans.

Is book promo Jace more expensive than JtMS right now? I know for a while there they would fluctuate and one would be more expensive.
There's certainly a lot less of the book promo, that's for sure. Lets be glad it wasn't Mindsculptor as the book promo.
Yes, book promo will almost certainly never go down. Very very limited supply and with a unique artwork to boot.
JTMS actually has a better shot of being reprinted because he was featured in a set and not as a promotion
edit: to give you an idea, book promo jace has always climbed, never fallen and JTMS fluctated due to bannings and rotations and all that fun stuff, that would explain why at certain points one would be higher than the other and vice versa
It's still the best planeswalker in the format. $100 might be a bit steep, but it wasn't opened very much and it's getting tougher to find with each passing day.

Due to real-life obligations, I am taking a long break from Magic which may include missing the local Legacy GP. Apologies for not being able to keep my threads updated.

To be fair, I think that the "Black Lotus" of planeswalker collections is foil Mindsculptor.

JTMS will not be reprinted unless it's as a Judge Promo or some other very limited run. The only way JTMS's price could fluctuate much more is if there was a massive Legacy crash or he was unbanned in Modern but neither of those scenarios seems very likely.

Legacy is played regularly in places. Look at the SCG opens on Sundays. They have pretty great attendance. Jace is a 4-of in some decks. Worldwake was the last set of a block. Jace is played in EDH. Jace is also a card that even casual players hang on to and don't trade away. For some it's the crown jewel of their collection.

3 of mostly, and if jtms is unbanned in modern I'd eat my japanese one.
Otherwise yeah, best walker, sees play alot in legacy, blah blah blah.
