Baleful Strix is a card that has been somewhat taunting me. I'm no pro player, and really don't have any serious pro aspirations, but i like to put together a fun decent deck whenever i have the chance.
Right now i'm having fun experimenting with Blue/Black and i've yet to meet a better 2 drop than Baleful Strix...
The thing is... if i put Baleful Strix on my deck, it becomes legacy. And i wanted to play Modern.
Also... Baleful Strix is god damn expensive. And only available on Night of the Ninja Planechase (i really wanted Wizard to port this card to another set....), and it's a bit hard to find Planechase around here, so i end up salivating over a card that might not be worth the investment in the end.
I was looking for good alternatives to Baleful Strix that fit in Modern, and also some general opinion on the card itself. Is it really worth the investiment in the current play environment we have for around? After all... it is a "Legacy only" card.
If you're looking for the deathtouch end, Tidehollow Strix is very similar. If you're looking for the card draw, you could try something like Alchemist's Apprentice. It's difficult to replace because there are few cheap, deathtouching flying cantripping creatures out there, in fact it's probably the only one. I don't think that justifies the $17 though O.o
However, in today's culture of Justin Bieber, Jersey Shore, and Twilight, where every song on the radio, every program on television and every site on the internet is just another monument to the pinnacle of human stupidity, it's certainly not the worst thing that people could be watching.
Bit less sarcasm perhaps? That was a very helpful answer...
And yeah... it's pretty much the same card, or at least they are similar in usefullness... i'm trading card advantage for some extra muscle, which is not bad in a Deathtouch flier for 2.
Depending on your deck's composition you could do worse than augur of bolas if you need card draw.
Not really on need of card advantage, but it is always good... it's just a fun "with friends" deck that runs on a very slim mana curve, it is actually quite fast with Jace's PhantasmVampire NighthawkHarbor Bandit and Kraken Hatchling but i could use some more efficient 2 drops, and actually any of these Strix would do a fantastic job it seems...

Ah, well, if you're looking for further suggestions, the folks in the Casual subforum tend to be pretty helpful.
How was that helpful, he gave you incorrect information about a card.
Power really doesn't matter so much when it comes to deathtouch. They're not exactly the same, but close enough that I wouldn't make a huge deal about people calling a 2/1 deathtouch and a 1/1 deathtouch the "same card".

Hoi, hoi, u embleer hrair

Strix creatures in a blue/black/red or blue/black/white deck. Have 4 tidehallow and 4 baleful. Have red or white buffs, depending on the 3rd colour, that give first strike. Deathtouch + first strike + flying = one of the best combinations you could have. and it isnt even high mana cost. White enchantments tend to give other things as well, like vigilance
Plains - John Avon - 230
Island - Jung Park - 235
Island - Vincent Proce - 237
Swamp - John Avon - 238
Mountain - John Avon - 242
Forest - John Avon - 246
The point everyone is trying to get across, that you seem unable to comprehend, is that both creatures have Flying and Deathtouch. Their p/t isn't that important, as long as they can do combat damage.
However, the thing that makes these two different is the card drawing.

Especially given that everybody in the discussion probably looked at magiccards.info pages and should have been able to readily tell what the poster meant.

And on that day, the people rejoiced for 12 moons.

There's nothing really comparable at all in Modern that gives you a decent body for 2 in U/B and also draws you a card.

4 Foil Tidehollow Strix cost 5 bucks, while a single regular Baleful Strix costs $17
This is actually a really cheap badass Common, i was surprised with the price point being this low...
And look at that, it has a friend in Parasitic Strix
2/1 and 1/1
I guess that means the same card? lol wat?

For example:
Swaghorn Elves
G
Creature - Elf Druid
When ~ enters the battlefield, draw a card.
T: Add G to your mana pool.
0/1
How does that card compare to Fyndhorn Elves, hm?

I second this--I love that card.

That s pretty minor mix up. a 2/1 with deathtouch and a 1/1 with deathtouch will do that same in most games.
I would just go for the cheap strix and calll it a day.
