I humbly disagree. Innistrad is a goldmine filled with diamonds that is laced with titanium. Liliana, enemy dual lands, snappy, geist of st. traft, plus a slew of other worthwhile rares. My money would go towards a box of this.
In every new set, I purchase a fat pack to get over the desire to crack some packs. Whatever I have not collected during the prerelease and the fat pack get bought.
Since I am a casual player, I am still trying to convince myself to wait and buy singles when cards rotate out of standard. Unfortunately, the "I must have it now!" voices in my head win out for the most part.
I always get a least one fatpack per set, but mostly because I collect the spindown dice and have uses for the box. I was gonna buy the packs anyways, might as well get my dice while I'm at it.
Also, I'm the kind of guy who builds with what he has: I've only purchased/traded for maybe 10 single cards instead of just cracking them, my upcoming Thromok EDH deck is the first deck where I really am seeking out specific cards I don't have,.
If you're buying the Fatpack just to open cards then it is totally not worth it. $40 for 9 boosters is not economical and plus you're not guaranteed a mythic in a fatpack. However if you enjoy the player's guide, dice, and the box then it is a decent investment.
Buying a fatpack (or really any sealed product) at retail markups and then opening it to sell the cards inside is not economically sensible.
Certainly you have a chance to win big, but the same is true on a different scale of a slot machine or a lottery ticket. The possibility of success doesnt make it any less of a bad idea.
On average you will lose money or maybe break even (which is still losing money if you value your own time and effort at all).
I like them. I mean, if you're looking for specific cards you might as well buy the singles, but if you want to get a bunch of packs, fat packs are a good way to do it. Comes with a bunch of land, a spin down, a box, and an insert that is actually somewhat collectible to some people.
Fat packs are only worth it if you're willing to hoard them for a few years. They go up because they only have one print run.
Ding ding ding, we have a winner!
Honestly the people that open these are just the people who like opening packs in general. They know they can save a lot of money by just buying the singles they need, but they buy them anyways. Well, thank you for keeping my LGS in business.
The only thing harder than trying to make money on full retail $4 booster packs in a low value set, is trying to make money on $4.5 booster packs in a low value set. You'll always lose in the long run.

This. Fatpacks are no different from regular boosters. Even though there's 9 boosters, no one is guaranteed a mythic. The OP should have probably asked if the extra contents (box, encyclopedia, and dice) were worth the extra $5-6 when you probably could get another booster.
I think from a collecting standpoint, they're a pretty good deal. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting the exclusive storage box/deck boxes, spindown and especially the visual encyclopedia for a new set.
As long as my budget will let me, I try to just purchase a fat pack to satisfy the pack-opening addiction and for the bonus stuff, then just pick up whatever else I need online or trading.
I will say, though, I don't like using the fat pack storage boxes for actual on-the-go storage...every time I would go to grab one off of a table, the lid would just slide up. Toolkit storage boxes are better for that, I think.

Or should I save a bit more for a booster box? Or get both? I plan on getting gatecrash, but... I don't know. :/
Fat packs at my LGS are 42.00$
Only buy the fatpack if you want the boxes, booklet, dice, lands, etc. from it. If you enjoy the extras, it's a great buy because you only need to pull 1 mythic and 1 shockland to basically breakeven right now. However, if you don't want the extra stuff, I'd say just get singles and avoid the box altogether. There's nothing you're going to pull from a box that is going to make you happy that you spend $119 on it.
I had to get a fat pack because I wanted something on release and well it's the only thing here that's printed in English. Personally, as a newer player I see the value in fatpacks, storage and a wad of lands is pretty good for me, plus any cards I have in a different language, I just hand them the book and say look it up. For the more experienced collector however, if you want want value for your money..
Boxes all the way.
Edit: I got Gideon, Champion of Justice in my GTC one but likewise, nothing in my R2R one. It's not guaranteed.
I like the boxes, spindown, and players guide. I usually use the players guide to make decks. Its easier to look through those then 1000s of cards. Sometimes i get lucky, and get really good pulls. Sometimes crap. I will buy 1 or 2 per set, just to have. I spend a lot of money on magic tho.
Are the boxes themselves worth anything? I have been getting them since world wake. I missed Mirr. Besieged, and NPH.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.
The Innistrad block as a whole was insane value
I am partial to AVR because I'm a huge angel fan and was abroad when it was released: I bought a booster box and opened it up but then had to stare at my cards for 3 months before actually playing them (not to mention the box had INSANE value, like 2 Cavern of the Soul, Tamiyo, the Moon Sage, Bonfire of the Damned, Gisela, Blade of Gold Night and Avacyn, Angel of Hope)
But I bought like 3 boxes of Innistrad so I agree it's a good pick

Duskmantle Seer and two Lord of the Void and my friend got Aurelia, the Warleader and Aurelia's Fury out of his
I don't know where you guys get your fatpacks but the ones I get from my LGS in Ottawa, Ontario Canada have been very, very good to me

Crypt Ghast was all the rage in my playgroup
I traded them away for some nice returns!
It's no Aurelia, but that's not a bad card. But, then again, I'm no pro. Extra mana is nice in paying for those extorts.

Mind you, though, I don't want this to devolve into a "what was in my fat pack" thread. You know where that goes.
