I recently found a listing on ebay for a guy selling a 1k lot of magic cards he/she supposedly got from a storage unit auction. The seller seems fairly legit because his past feedback is made up almost entirely of vintage items, not cards. I was looking at the photos and spotted a black lotus, didn't know what edition. I was afraid of taking the gamble so I did not bid the $201 dollars needed to win the lot. After all, it could've been a proxy or fake the seller put into the lot to attract attention. Now I feel like a lost out :/. What do you guys think? I need to get the guilt out of myself.
Yeah seems kind of fishy. The fact that it seems like the only older card in the lot (correct me if I'm wrong) I think you made the right decision in passing on it.
not to me. looks like a rip off, this lot, i mean.
This seems kind of fishy, as well.
This lot is for over 1k+ of random magic cards. A while back i had purchased a storage unit and found these magic cards in them. I have been selling them in randomized 1k+ bulk lots of cards. I do not guarantee any specific cards in these lots so please do not complain or leave bad feedback for not receiving a specific card. I cannot accept returns due to the nature of the item, since i cannot be sure if you cherry pick the best cards from the set and mail them back. I have almost no knowledge of these cards so please do not get very technical with the questions. Please do ask any questions regarding the lot and i will be happy to answer however. Thanks for bidding! *No returns or refunds, please with ask questions before bidding!*Payment due within 4 days*Item is ready for shipping
Good call on your part I think. I saw this one and seeing the lotus screamed "FAKE" to me. If you look at the other cards, it's all recent stuff(AVR,RTR), and not even any rares iirc.
If you zoom in on the lotus, it looks like a (badly) trimmed CE.
Perfect setup for scam.
No way you can tell from the picture.
If you ask and selling doesn't know the value he'll get a hint and react.
Third or fourth picture has the lotus conveniently centered, while half hidden.
Finally, sell as 50$ worth of bulk as 200$ with a proxy so it can't be reclaimed.
Yeah seems kind of fishy. The fact that it seems like the only older card in the lot (correct me if I'm wrong) I think you made the right decision in passing on it.
Theres a few older lands and i see some 7th edition cards but yeah i think you're right
Looks kinda fishy, but you'll just never know now, will you? This is going to bug you for years.
I think you probably made the right decision. All the cards are like blah blah blah blah, barely can see those... oh hrm Black Lotus peeking out at me... blah blah blah.
I think it was *probably* a rip-off. But you'll never really know.
It could also be some cheapo rip-off Lotus that they printed down at Kinkos in order to sell crap cards on eBay.
Yeah, there's no way it wasn't intentional that all the other cards are fanned out with not more than 1/4 of an inch showing and BAM conveniently that Lotus's entire art is showing smack dab in the middle.
My guess is he bought a bunch of packs, harvested the good rares, and sold the rest as this sketchy lot. The lotus is probably a proxy or maybe even shopped in. I guess you'll never know for sure but if you regret it just go spend $200 on lottery tickets. You probably have about the same odds to make a hefty profit.
Well, if it's too good to be true, it probably is. He says that he split the lot up into groups of 1k each, and he says that the picture shown is the 1k you will be getting. Look at his feedback, and you can indeed see that he has sold other 1k lots with different pictures. In the other lot pictures, there are alpha/beta cards, so that lotus could be the real deal.
Here's a close up picture.
The top left corner looks odd, but that could just be the flavor text of the white card making it look weird.
Not that it matters now, but I would be wary of any such auction. Although the seller has perfect feedback, I still find it very suspect for reasons already stated. Also, take into account the prior MtG auctions - same amount of cards, yet much lower starting price($120 vs $200). This, combined with the placement of the Lotus in the card spread, indicates to me that the seller is probably aware that the Lotus image is enough to entice people to think "It's only $200 for a chance at a Lotus! Even if it's fake, there could be other good cards to make up the difference".
If you can burn $200 and forget about the package arriving and never look at your bank account, then take a chance on that kind of auction. Otherwise, expect to be disappointed.
Extremely doubtful. All of the cards are modern cards and then there is just a Black Lotus... thats cute.
Exactly what I thought.
A while back i had purchased a storage unit and found these magic cards in them.
Yet he's got a bunch of RtR in there.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
There are a LOT of auctions on eBay that have been "found in storage auctions" or are from an "estate sale". Almost all of them are ambiguous and shady. People just do this to sell off their bulk cards for hundreds of dollars to suckers. Just be glad you didn't pay 200 bucks for junk commons and a fake black lotus. The more you look around ebay the more you will see similar types of shady listings just like this one.
He's probably also playing off of the possible hype from a Storage Wars episodes where they find a Magic collection in their storage container with a bunch of draft crap and then randomly a Lotus (plus CE Pearl and Twister).

I do not guarantee any specific cards in these lots....
1. Quote above.
2. He is ignorant of the cards.(legit for about 10 minutes then the poster of the auction gets an email from someone explaining to him what he has and he yanks the auction)
3. All of them are crap except this one card he tries to tactically hide...oh, the one worth a couple thousand btw.
4. One picture is centered perfectly on this ultra rare half hidden card he knows nothing about.

You could wait until the feedback shows up. "Defaced collectors edition card, gold border hit with Sharpie..."
