So, i bought a fat pack of RtR today, and when i got home with it i opened it up to find out that before i purchased it, apparently someone had opened all the packs up, removed the rares, and then re-shrink wrapped the whole thing. The store was cool about letting me exchange it for another one, but it was a huge pain in the rear end. Anyone else ever had something like this happen?
It wasn't vandalized, it probably just had a packing issue. It sometimes happens - not unheard of but rather rare. Wizards is pretty good about fixing it, so if you ever have a messed up pack or other product, let them know and they will make it right.
I actually know of someone who repeatedly does this. Everyone knows about it, it's kind of awkward because he almost seems proud. He keeps buying fat packs, commander decks and such, guts them, and returns them. Doesn't hurt big retailers too much but I just imagine someone buying these, perhaps as a gift for their kid, or some kid saving up their allowance for that sweet new bunch of packs or some commander or pds product and getting a bunch of basic lands. It's kind of creepy but aside from avoiding him we don't know what a reasonable reaction would be.

We know that. Bunch of younger players or their parents may not. Back in elementary school, I didn't know gaming shops were a thing. My friends and I got our cards from the bookstore in the mall.

I could go to a walmart right now, but a fatpack, gut the packs for the rares, and return in citing that the packs were missing rares and are faulty?
And essentially get my money back/exchange for another?
yes, you could. you'd be a jerk for it, but you could. I was worried that walmart was going to give me some "we cant return items like this once opened" song and dance but they switched it out no problem. The return lady even said it wasn't the first time it had happened at that store.
Its happened to me before. I just got another one. They even let me keep the commons and uncommons! Thanks target!

See, i find that hillarious.
For instance, you could be a guy to do that, and awkwardly agree when the cashier says it happens sometimes. Not saying you are of course, but it seems like a circle, a domino effect.
1 guy does it, then another buys that box. Then has to go back.... and you dont know if HE'S the one doing it.

I kind of agree with that except I know the one I returned isn't going back on the shelves to screw someone else over, as I did not return it in a re-sellable condition, and I saw it get placed into their RTV (return to vendor) bin. That they told me it had happened before suggests it's a walmart employee, or that it happened somewhere higher up the distribution chain.
At my local box store I often find the foil promo cards removed from the front of decks and with the new RTR packaging I have to checks the side to make sure the pack hasn't been removed or opened. I've learned that for the most part big stores like Wal-Mart could care less because technically the product is still considered property of the distributor until the point of sale. The week RTR dropped there were stacks of open commons/uncommons sitting on the floor where someone opened a large quantity, took the rares and left.

That is seriously weird... Who didn't notice someone sitting in the aisle opening packs of cards???

You have to remember that we are expecting severely underpaid corporate employees to "care" that someone is ripping off cards from a trading card game. At the end of the day we value cardboard with mythical figures on them - They are hoping to clear enough hours to make benefits. If I were in their shoes it wouldn't be an important issue to me either.
They actually took the time to re-shrink wrap the fat pack boxes?
When Innistrad had just come out I went to Walmart and every single fat pack box was opened. The outer packaging was just stuffed inside the box along with all the commons and uncommons.
In my opinion it was amazing that they were able to open 5 or 6 of these as well as all of the boosters without anybody noticing.

I work retail, not at Wal-Mart, but right now as busy as it is with Christmas no one is paying any attention to anything. People walk out with TV's, liquor, DVD players, etc. so having someone watch a guy look at trading cards isn't very high on our priority lists.
That is seriously weird... Who didn't notice someone sitting in the aisle opening packs of cards???
Especially weird, because they would be infinitely more unlikely that they would get caught if they were to just shove the boosters into their pocket/coat, leave the store and open the packs elsewhere. They would even get to keep the commons and uncommons.
I used to work at a Walmart store, and their policy (at least, at the time) was that hourly employees CANNOT stop a person and accuse them of shoplifting, even if you see them do it first hand. The only thing we were allowed to do in that circumstance was to call for a manager, and hope the shoplifter is still durdling around 15 to 20 minutes later when the manager actually shows up.
Even if you set off the alarm going out the door, you are under no obligation to stop, and once you are outside of the store, you're pretty much home free.
I don't suggest doing it, as some people have morals, but it is incredibly difficult to get caught shoplifting these kinds of things from Walmart. The people that get caught are the people doing stupid things, such a ripping open packs in the middle of the store, pulling the rare out and stuffing the rest of the contents back in.
I could go to a walmart right now, but a fatpack, gut the packs for the rares, and return in citing that the packs were missing rares and are faulty?

Yes! You can do that! It is illegal, and if you get caught you go to jail, but you can break the law and see how long you can get away with it!
"Wait! So I can take this gun, put a mask on my head, and walk into a 7-11 and they'll just give me all the cash they have in the register???"
"Wait! So I can hang out at my LGS, wait until someone turns their head for a second, and when no one is looking I can take their trade binder and just go home with it??"
For those that got any damaged or missing product and cant/dont want to take it back to the place you bought it from, contact Wizards customer support.
I had a duel deck with missing planeswalkers. I ended up just needing to pay shipping to get a new box, and they threw in a couple packs to make up for the shipping.

very rarely will you go to jail for stealing anything under 5grand unless youve been busted like a million times. ( wish people would look up stuff before they start talking smack). As for returning them without the rares its basically your word agaisnt the stores. Sure they can spend tons of money pulling survelliance videos and pay someone to go through them for hours to nail you but trust me when i say they won't.Its a sad thing but i know someone who does this on a regular basis. We have 3 walmarts so he buys one pulls the rares puts the packs back in and retruns it to a different walmart.Walmart then does one of two things. A- they send it back to wizards as a damaged product or claim under the retail code and they get a new product or refunded their money or B-they shrink wrap the box and put it back on the shelf to resell as is. So to summarize yes you can do this with out pretty much any fear of getting caught but i hope you a better a human being than this now can we please close this thread?
Setting all of the morality nonsense aside. The real problem is you have to drive to and from "big box store x" multiple times costing some amount of gas and more importantly time. Then go through and pluck rares and whatever of value and reseal them all again taking up a non insignificant amount of time. There is a very minimal chance of getting into trouble. The real problem is its just such terrible EV on your time. I mean you could just go get the packs retail for like under 30 bucks. Then you have the problem that opening packs trying to crack rares is always terrible value and to top that off the inefficiency in then reselling or trading the cards.
The only people which this would be worthwhile for are very young and can't be employed. Any adult doing this is literally worthless with no actual skills or contributions to make to society.
