I'm on a break from paper magic and have been since the RTR prerelease. When I get back into it, I want to start a theme deck league. All I know is I want it to involve staring with a theme deck from before intro packs were made (I've got my eyes on either the Snake one from CoK or Kjeldoran Cunning from Coldsnap). The only problem is, I don't want to have the new cards just be from the newest set, I feel like it would just evolve into a standard deck at that point. Suggestions for how to acquire cards for this? More theme decks, packs, what?
That kind of defeats the purpose of a league. Everyone would have to buy singles then. I'm thinking tournament packs would be fun though to add every week.
So you want to start a sealed league where instead of 6packs you start with a starter deck? Interesting idea.
You should ban Rats' Nest as a choice.
Rat's Nest in itself isn't too good of a deck. The problem is Umezawa's Jitte, and theme decks usually come with artifact removal, and there are ways to deal with it. I'd say there are way more powerful theme decks out there such as the 3 sliver ones.
It's a cool idea, but it'll be very difficult acquiring unopened theme decks from that long ago. I've heard about Walmart repacks, where they effectively tape together two theme decks and sell them as a product. Perhaps that's worth investigating?
I'm not sure you would be able to find an unopened Rat's Nest deck... another potential pitfall is the power level of different blocks. I did not play during Kamigawa but I would assume that any precon deck from that block would not be as competitive against other blocks (Lorwyn comes to mind).
I've been running a very successful league using the Return to Ravnica intro decks. Started with unaltered intro decks, added some packs into the mix on a week by week basis, did an organized rochester draft, and i've finally caved and allowed open trading of cards.
Did something like this last year in place of usual Arena League format. We started with any intro deck that the shop had in inventory, then added 1 booster of player's chioce after each week, for the duration of 4 week league. At first it was a great idea that gathered lots of interest. Unfortunately, some players made poor deck choices, or poor booster additions that left them entirely out of contention. For example, 1 guy chose an infect deck from Mirrodin as a starting point, but the store only had 2 boosters from New Phrexia left (and they sold those before he could claim them for Arena).
You may want to limit the intros and boosters to currently available stuff, but still beleive it is worth doing.
