Me and my friends bought 2 FTV Relics and 4 booster boxes of Zen. We didn't even get a penny off.
Me and my friends have spent well more than $2500 every year for about 4 years there and to not even get anything off that purchase was a little annoying.
Even when they didn't ahve enought people for a FNm (we don't play) I fronted the rest of the cash on multiple times so people could still have a draft. This is the one reason why I don't go there anymore.
My LGS sponsors a few players, who also happen to work at the store. It doesn't seem to be bad business. If they lend a playset of FoW, they know they will get it back, what's the problem? As long as you know the person you are sponsoring and they are also buying a lot of cards for you, why the heck not?
40-50$ a week for a card store from one person is a lot, considering I buy a deck once in a while and usually only pay for FNMs.
I don't think it's a bad thing so long as it isn't taken overboard. If it starts to affect the gameplay, like another poster said, then it'd be a problem. As for my personal experience, for a while I attended an LGS that let me enter tournaments for free and regularly gave me free cards, but I get the feeling a lot of it wasn't because of my patronage if-you-know-what-I-mean. At the other two LGSs I've attended, including my current one, I just get occasional deals on cards, which I vastly prefer.

Im not sure what you mean, and slightly interested to what you mean.
My store is selling FTV at MSRP to regulars, and in some cases cheaper, but at $50 to outsiders.
My store may attempt to get like 10 holiday boxes and sell them at just above wholesale, as in in the <15$ range, hopefully 12. Meaning I can get my 8 for under $100, which would be amazing. But that is because I preordered those 8.
My store does other stuff too, they sold COM products at a loss for a day, I think $12.50 a deck, and cool stuff like that.
When Getting products at MSRP is considered to be a perk....
The owner of my LGS gives me first crack at most of the new singles he gets in. I've spent a ton on singles at the store over the past couple of years so if he picks up a bunch of stuff he'll let me take a look at them before he prices them and puts them in the showcase. No discounts, but early access before they go out to the public. I've picked up some nice stuff, like a foil Windswept Heath, a playset of Bobs, etc. He also gives me a fairly decent value on stuff for trade, but usually because I trade in lots of good stuff that he can flip easily.

I've been going to my lgs for the past year or so, not gonna lie, there are some pretty sweet perks.
I bought $3 in singles last Thursday, and it came to like 3.20-something after tax. When I said I'd run out to the car to get some change he offered me a soda and we'd call it even.
$0.20 off a soda, pretty sick.
business wise, it makes sense for them to be friendly to you. you probably wouldn't drop 50 bucks a week in a place that didn't treat you well. Also, it might be that the shop owner is a genuinely nice guy. My LGS is ran by some pretty chill people. they know they're a smaller store, and that their buylist is sometimes lackluster compared to the bigger shops downtown, so they go out of their ways to be friendly and build a regular customer base.
My LGS just gave out free team shirts with their name on it to the regulars. Also, they recently started a reward system where you get perks and free things for every X events you participate in.
When Getting products at MSRP is considered to be a perk....
When you get $140 in cards for $35 you should be happy as a clam...also of note your clearly don't know that MSRP means manufacturer's suggested retail price. They don't force you to sell at that price, you can sell your products at any pricepoint.
I kind of have perks at my LGS although now I work there so I get a lot more perks for being an employee.
As for perks for regulars. Why not. There are loyalty programs all over the place nowadays so if your LGS doesn't have perks for regulars they're just being stingy as someone buying 50 dollars worth of product a week from you is quite incredible.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
Two good condition Bayous are like $80-90 on Ebay...you should probably double check the price if it necessitates a payment plan.
The Bayous are for a Legacy deck I am putting together slowly. There are other expensive cards that I need for it, too. In the end analysis, there are often other things I want more than those two cards for the money we are dropping with the store.
If I were to ask them, I am about 99% positive they would hold them for me until I could pay. They have held items for me in the past, but so far, I have never asked them to hold more than a week or so. We live out of town, and they know we have to travel to get to them. But, we do drop by AT LEAST a couple times a month, and we often bring orders for other people in our town and pick the stuff up for other shoppers. The LGS store calls us their "ambassadors" in our town.
Yes, we definitely support that store, and don't go anywhere else for prereleases. We are "their people" from out of town. So, in addition to the money we drop there, we are also partially (largely, actually) responsible for about 25 other people dropping a lot of money there, too. Yeah, they do like to see us coming. And, they take care of us.
There is more that we do for and with them, too. They have let us have some no-longer used flip charts used for teaching MTG, and we do that in our area. In the past 5 years, our gaming group has gone from 5 people to over 40, and that LGS is the number 1 place for supplies outside of booster packs (lots of people get those every week at Wal-Mart). Singles and boxes, they get from the LGS.
So, in just about every way except officially, I am a part-time free employee there, and, yes, they pay in discounts on product and good treatment.

In small business land, it's not always that easy. Target and Wal Mart mark things BELOW MSRP all the time because they make it up with overpriced groceries and having their own "house label" clothing and items they can mark up 300% without people blinking. A small game store uses MSRP as a way to stay alive and know that other shops in the area SHOULD have that same item for the same price.
If it wasn't for doing trading/store credit... I'd say many of our beloved shops would go under in a heartbeat.

This may be from Firefly, a science fiction show, and it may be about Serenity, a space ship, but it is very true for real life and just about every Local Gaming Store:
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: But it ain't all buttons and charts, little albatross. You know what the first rule of flying is? Well, I suppose you do, since you already know what I'm about to say.
River Tam: I do. But I like to hear you say it.
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: Love. You can learn all the math in the 'Verse, but you take a boat in the air that you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
BTW, Firefly is epic. Watch it, you will love it, or you have no soul.

Its normal. I have a $50 tab at my LGS almost every week that I always pay on every other friday. sometimes more. the owner of my regular LGS knows people like me pay for his children's college and he shows his appreciation by doing this for me.

My store grandfathered me in to their 'club' program which gives something like a 10% discount on almost all products they sell. I've been going there for nearly 18 years at this point. They will even (on occasion if I ask the owner rather than the employee) hold an FTV for me, despite their store policy of first come, first served for the limited-run items.
I'd much rather spend my money at a brick and mortar store where I'm greeted like an old friend every time I walk in. And as the years have gone on, the amount of money I spend per visit keeps going up. I think they appreciate the long-term loyal customers, too - especially in this economy.
Which, if you care to examine, was the big screen sequel to Firefly. Most fans consider them to be one and the same series, just like Star Trek: The Motion Picture is considered to be a continuation of the Star Trek television series.
As to whether or not I know it is from the movie, yes, of course I do. I own the DVD of the entire series and the movie. In fact, it is the Collector's Edition of the movie, complete with all of the extras (like River's interviews at the "university" where she kills the interviewer played by Joss Whedon). I consider myself a Browncoat.
Does that make the parallels any less valid?

I could see why it could be annoying to some people if two were to enter the same tournament, and one guy was just basically borrowing the store owner's cards left and right, and the other guy asked to borrow some cards and got nothing only because he only bought like 4 boosters where the other guy bought 4 boxes of the new set that came out. Its not exactly straight unfair, but it could still lead to some bad feelings for new potential customers.
