The guys at my LGS are usually pretty cool. Heck they've even embraced my son who is 10(9 when we started going) and helped out quite a bit.
But there are some new people from other stores that are showing up being complete arses to everyone. Worst one is a guy who will not shut up during playing, now I don't mind some banter or conversation cause this is a friendly game. But this guy is just chattering the whole time and it drives me nuts. My son beat him with his WRR(which he built himself after reading stuff online) and that guy goes off on him about oh your dad bought you this deck and so on. My son just replies "Of course, I can't get a job yet."

Newsflash: In casual multiplay you don't really care if you win or lose. You're there to play as many different games as possible and have as much fun as possible during those games.
2nd this. Or 3rd...? whatever.
When I play in casual games, I wanna play quickly and efficiently. Especially in EDH. I'd rather play three 1 hr EDH games then 1 long silly 3 hr game. x_x
And for me, the players *I don't like* include those that remind me about all the static effects on the field, turn after turn. Like having Basandra out and stating, 'remember you can't cast spells during combat' for the 5th turn in the row. No **** I can't cast spells during combat! Perhaps it was just a combination of him just properly maintaining gamestate, a lack of non-combat spells in my hand, and his gradually growing board control growing, but it was just...UGH! X_x *Calmly and a bit sarcasticly* "I've well aware that I can't cast spells during combat."
I just thought of another thing that irritates the hell out of me...
About half of the people at my LGS do the quick hand shuffle thing (the way kibler does) and they do it very LOUDLY... I understand that it's just a habit you picked up but can't you do it quitely. The worst part is that some of my casual group pick up the habit... We've since broken them of the habit by sanctioning the use of Stop That in all of our playgroups games... Now I just have to convince the other people at my LGS to convert (for casual games at least, unless Wotc reprints it in M13 of course... :awesome:)

Cube. The best way to play Magic. PERIOD. Come over and check it out. Also, check out my Peasant Split Card Cube.
The World of Pokemon RPG has been rebooted. Come over and check it out.
People who have to shuffle their opponent's decks, especially when they don't do it gingerly. Why can't you just cut like everyone else?
At higher REL levels, you HAVE to shuffle. I don't get to play FNMs and stuff often, but when i do, it's kind of just habit for me to shuffle. Nothing against people, and if you're not cheating, there's no harm in me doing it.
Also, most (the vast majority, actually) people don't shuffle enough. If i see you sideboard, and then do 2 riffles and present, your deck is not even close to randomized. Here i can do one of 3 things -
1) Accept that all their sideboard cards are clumped in one place, and not randomly either
2) Ask you to keep shuffling
3) Shuffle your deck
Both 2 and 3 are going to piss you off, and 1 is not going to happen, so i just do the one that's easier for me. I shuffle your deck.
People during casual multiplay who have 20% of their deck consist of Divining tops, brainstorms and other cards that make you look at your library, rearrange it, shuffle it or in any other way force you to ponder a certain amount of time due to the decisions you can make. It slows the game down to a crawl. Often they play as if they're playing in a tourney and every decision can be a game deciding one.
Newsflash: In casual multiplay you don't really care if you win or lose. You're there to play as many different games as possible and have as much fun as possible during those games.
This, a lot. Especially in EDH where the decks are all huge. Goldfish your damn deck before bringing it to a 4+ player game, so you actually know what you're looking for when you pick it up to search/scry/Ponder.
Luckily, while my playgroup has a Sisay, an Intet, a Scion, and a Maelstrom Wanderer (me), we're all fairly good about that.
I don't like, (note; not hate) to play against really serious players. Two weeks ago at FMN I played against someone. He's a nice guy, and I like him. But he's good, and he is rather serious about magic. I'm a newbie and rather casual. At the first round we get to fight each other. I get out a Descendant's Path. I have humans on the field. The first turn I forget it's trigger, and draw a human before he reminds me of the trigger. I tell him I drew a human and he let's me put it on the field. He tells me not to forget it again. He did nothing wrong but the whole time I feel rather on edge.
I won the round because he was very generous and reminded me of my triggers. In no way did he do anything wrong. But at the same time it was no fun playing against him, the mood was all wrong in my oppinon.
I like my magic relaxed and casual-of-sorts. I don't like it when games put me on edge.
I hope I made sense there.
I definitely understand how you felt, since people can be strict even in a casual FNM tournament. I know I definitely feel the same way sometimes. But after all, you said it yourself, he didn't do anything wrong in reminding you of your triggers. Even if you're a casual player, if you plan to play in a tournament, try to remember these small details. Maintaining a proper game state is a big deal. Personally, I find a game of MTG frustrating if we realise like three turns after the fact that something was done wrong (like forgetting to transform a creature during upkeep) and then trying to correct it.
If it helps, place any cards with an upkeep trigger in a noticeable spot, or say the phases of the beginning of the turn (untap, upkeep, draw, first main) to yourself so you don't forget!
As for my pet peeve, it's sort of like your's - playing against an opponent who can be too serious. I get that they are playing to win and keeping that poker face, but it'd be nice if they could smile more and make jokes, haha
But I sometimes have the feeling that more experienced players get annoyed when duelling me. They are really nice guys, but their seriousness can sometimes really make you feel unwelcome.
I'm the same way, actually. I'm kind of new ish, so at FNM I tell my opponents that I'm new and to help me by pointing out any rules that I break. Most players are happy to help me out with reminders. Perhaps it's just the players at your local game store. You might have luck at a different store with a more casual crowd. Another thing that I would recommend is just testing your deck over and over by yourself as a way to remind yourself about upkeep triggers and other things.
I know I have bad habits. I shuffle my cards in my hand when I'm not looking at them. I'll call out worst-case scenario cards against my opponents when they draw, for example, if a Bonfire off the top would wreck me, I'll say "Bonfire?" or "Wipe my board?" Sometimes when my opponent's tapping lands I'll try to call out what they're playing, sometimes humorously like "Doran!" or "Child of Alara!" and sometimes not like "Delver, go?" or "Restoration Angel blowout!" Sometimes I'll complain if my opponent drew the only card they could to win the game (even if it's just an untapped land, odds were still in my favor) or if I fail to draw a single land in 15 cards (which is like 8.9% to happen), but I try to keep it light and C'est la vie.
The people I don't like playing against are generally pricks or depressed people. If you complain about my turn 3 unburial rites into elesh norn, I have no sympathy for you. That's what my deck's supposed to do. Good luck next round broseph.

Like I said, I can only go by my own experience, which is now 18 years. Kind of disheartening when you think you know something and you find out that you're a notch below a low grade moron.
The type of player that when they are losing/in a bad position they just shut down and start acting like a complete and total *****. One of my good friends is actually like this and he's actually the person who taught me to play Magic. Seeing him turn into one of the kinds of players I hate the most is just unfathomable since I consider him so good. Whatever, don't be a tool because you can't play around counters/removal/basic crap.
Slow-playing is terrible. I can't tell you guys how many times I've gone to a draw because my opponent was sitting there taking the full two minutes every single action during a freaking casual Legacy FNM. The worst is when their decks consist of Brainstorm, Top, Jace and Ponder's and they purposely slow play on purpose because they know they're losing. Like, seriously; these decks aren't cheap. Don't tell me you just bought them today and decided to play. It's a control deck; you don't have to sit there thinking about it like you're playing TES or Cephalid Breakfast. Please grow the hell up and take the loss like a man. Ugh.
Another one is the kind of player who sits there and comments on your every move. "Oh, I probably would have Snag'd this creature and not that creature :D" just to mess with you. It's the most annoying when they're losing badly and you know you're the better player/playing flawlessly anyways.
Also the old grandpa types are kind of annoying sometimes. "Back in my day the best two drop was Grizzly Bears"

Mhjames: mtgsalvation: I DON'T SEE HOW THIS CARD IS GOOD. I KNOW PATRICK CHAPIN USED IT AND WENT 8-0, BUT THAT WAS A SMALL TOURNAMENT. THE CARD IS TOO SLOW. YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THE OPPONENT HAS A SPELL IN THE GRAVEYARD
I like the players who don't try to justify why they just lost to me by rattling off the mistakes they made as if it was their decision to lose. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside whenever my opponent says something like, "I would have had you if I played my Druid's Familiar last turn instead," and I get to reply by revealing my Geistsnatch and gesturing to my open mana.
I enjoy the company of players who understand that me shuffling their decks is not an accusation of cheating. You are required to shuffle your opponent's decks at higher REL events, and I think this is a habit everyone should pick up. I'm trying to randomize your assortment of cards, not cut it in half and cross my fingers. If you can't afford to drop a couple bucks on some protective sleeves, you can't afford this hobby.
I especially love players who don't ask to take back their mistakes at regular REL events.
I'm usually ok with other players, each player/person is different.
However, I cannot stand those who curse/swear a lot. I don't even know why they do that. This one guy at my LGS says the F-word every other word in his sentence. I remember him being able to resolve into the maw of hell during a draft and started swearing really loud. Even when trading he swears/curses a lot. He literally says "Do you have a ******* [Card Name]? I need a couple for my ******* deck. These other 'mofos' don't have em."
Also those who show disrespect to other players and even judges.
Players that forget that all LGS events are for FUN and that you can't MAKE A LIVING doing it. Play cards have fun, don't berate all the new and bad players.
And slow players. I know the cards have tiny words on them, but every turn doesn't need to take 5 minutes.
The players that aren't there to have fun. It's one thing if you're having a miserable go, and aren't exactly feeling chipper about the day, but the ones that are either PTQ wannabes or rage monkeys are just not fun to play against.
I can't stand people who play the game competitively. I'm talking about people who only want the prize at the end, and the glory of winning. For me, magic is more about the fun things that happen during the game, the cool interactions between cards, and the interesting gamestates that evolve. but some people have to win all the time, and i really don't understand that mentality.
My friends always try and get me to go to FNM with them, and when I do, it's always the same 10 or 11 people playing their tier-1 standard decks. those kinds of decks are no fun to me, because they're so expensive and are very seldom as synergistic i think they should be. my decks are always "build around" decks, where there's some synergistic strategy between the cards. that doesn't work out so well in a competitive format. All of this isn't really so bad, it's just the nature of the event. but the people there are frequently mean and look down upon me, telling me that my decks are bad or being paternalistic to me, "hey let me look through your deck and tell you how it can be better". The answer is always "buy more expensive cards that work well on their own". That's no fun at all.
People who won't. stop. complaining. ever. And can't take a loss without playing the blame game.
It grinds my gears how with some players, every time they lose it's because of "manascrew" or "bad draws" or because "their sealed/draft pool has nothing good in it." Bad luck happens, but when I beat you 8 tournaments in a row, it's not because you're unlucky.
I can't believe this thread has got to four pages and no one's mentioned bad hygiene yet because gawd almighty that's the absolute worst. I hate playing in the summer because not only is it hot and cramped in the store, but it smells like absolute death.
e: seriously it's not hard to shower every day and put on some deodorant. The person sitting across from you will appreciate it.
at the kitchen table: the guy who gets so excited to play his big 8 casting cost dragon, makes all kinds of comments about how he's going to win, windmill slams it with a **** eating grin on his face... and then does nothing but ***** when it dies to removal or gets countered and refuses to play you for weeks afterward.
at fnm: the dude who goes on and on and on and on and on and on about this is jank, thats jank, this guy is so great, thats jank, this guy did this at this other tournament, this card is jank, your deck is jank, jank jank jank, meta meta meta, pro pro pro. shut up and play the damned game.
"You're dealing with a primarily anti-social demographic with MTG players."
I'm reminded of the person who said it's because you're dealing with a room full of people who are each used to being the smartest person in a given room.
Since I cant use the quote feature on my cell ill reply thusly. I dont go to anything but fnm so the 4k analogy is not relevant to people shuffling my deck. But I thank the previous reply for helping me know why strangers may not know if im cheating.
I hate the super-serious wannabe-pro type of players. It's FNM, dude, there's nothing on the line but a few packs at best. There's no reason to have a stick in an uncomfortable place just because I'm acting casual, making conversation, etc. I go to FNM to have fun, not to pretend I'm actually on the Pro Tour.
I have to make a comment on this.
At my FNM, there are serious players, although not as many PTQ type players as you'd expect. First place at our FNM was $75 store credit for 56 players. Our store (the Monstore in Montclair; you can look it up) has everything from Power 9 and Portal 3K to Legacy and Standard staples. So FNM definitely has something on the line.
I played in a S.D. TCG Player tournament, got top 8, and got $150. Do you think I'd rather do that or win 1st place at my FNM 3 times in a row? Do the math.
That being said, I still don't think that people at my FNM mind my competitive spirit. Sometimes people ask why I play Delver, but honestly there are other Delver players, not just me. I have also had my share of humbling experiences at FNM, so I can't be too cocky (including losing to a BW Tokens build by a guy who played MTG for 2 weeks).
Legacy - Sneak Show, BR Reanimator, Miracles, UW Stoneblade
Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/ Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves
Standard - Mono Red (6-2 and 5-3 in 2 McQ)
Draft - (I wish I had more time for limited...)
Commander - Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build) (dead format for me)
Please, Paypal gift me $40k. I'll totally pay you back.
Same logic. Pro tours are a 40k prize to first, why would I blow a PTQ to assume you aren't a cheat or liar?
Its not the even about your suspition of cheating. Iv had judges in top 8 instruct to sufficiently shuffle my opponents deck after I had tried to only cut. Its just a good practice to get into.
Personally I hate playing against unknowledgable players. I hate having to be that guy that has to inform my opponent about the rules of the game they choose to play becuase they are going to look at me like im the ******* even though its the rules.
I will play what wins, not what is convenient. Personal preference is nothing, The win is all that matters. I will netdeck at every opportunity, but I will not let that stifle my creativity. Style points do not appear on tournament reports. A good deck with an incompetent pilot is nothing more than a dressed up match win. I will crush my opponent mercilessly, and expect no less from him. Victory is its own reward, The prize is just a bonus.
