When Avacyn first dropped I had a bunch of Burn at the Stakes and one Bonfire of the Damned. I needed to get my hands on a few dual lands, ended up getting scammed by a supposedly stand up guy, traded me a few lesser value duals for the Bonfire. The entire situation was a blur to be honest, we had just finished playing a draft, I was talking to two different people at once when he asked me about it, and I traded without even realizing what I was doing. I kept telling myself I had another one at home anyway, but when I got home I found that wasn't the case; the jackwang had rused me by saying "well they are worth the same anyway," and I bought into it. My fault, to be honest, but I still regret it even now.
If it makes you feel any better. I traded over 1000 dollars worth of cards for 5 dollars worth of POGS converting the prices to the prices today. Compared to you who was actually scammed, I feel like such a big dummy. I freely traded them thinking I got the better bargain. This was back in '94 though. Was still a kid.
You know what, I know a guy who will intentionally trade with kids to scam them out of their good cards, using cards with cooler artwork or that were foil garbage to get the cards he wanted from them. That really, seriously pisses me off and I commend you for still playing; if I was one of those kids who got ripped off I probably would have quit.
The pog thing reminded me about how my brother in law traded all his magic cards circa 1996-1998 for Highlander TCG cards. He's got a full set of all the highlander cards so he must have had a decent amount of magic cards from that time. I'm just imagining he probably turned $400 worth of magic cards(probably worth $1500 nowadays) for what is essentially completely worthless now.
Like most people, selling all my cards when I quit like 15 years ago. Nothing else major; I almost bought a foil playset of entreat for like 30, bonfires low too, etc, but I don't blame myself for not doing that.
Selling two different collections of cards between 1999 and 2009. Had some good stuff from between tempest and urzas saga blocks and some more great stuff the second time from odyssey to time spiral blocks. All together only made probably 700 between the two times. Got back into it (again!) and kick myself for all the shock lands, mox diamonds, and other cards i could really use that are gone. Makes me wanna curl up and cry...

That's just plain evil. The guy must have issues for him to do that. I deem him the same level as a child predator. LOL, I really never realized what I had done until I started playing magic for real when the Odyssey Block came.

That's sad. I don't blame him though. Those cards could have been future treasures for all he knew at that time. Sadly they ended up flopping.
Man, worst story like this I have ever heard came from my best friend. He started playing magic when alpha first came out. He ended up quitting because he had spent several hundred dollars on a deck to play with, and then they banned all the cards he had purchased to build this deck. He didn't sell his cards then, he just put them in boxes and stored them. Fast forward a few years. His wife and he split up, but only temporarily, they got back together in about a year. Well, when they got back together, he was going through all the stuff he had left at his house, and couldn't find his MTG cards. His wife tells him that she sold them all (his whole collection) in a yard sale for $10. He went and looked up prices at a local store and said that (at that time) the collection had a price tag in the thousands.
Now, when he told me this story, I didn't play magic, so I really didn't grasp the full impact. I started playing years after he initially related his tale to me, and it all kind of clicked. I called him not too long after I got into the game and asked exactly what cards he had. He started rattling off names like Black Lotus, Mox this, Mox that, etc. He had playsets + of all the P9, plus god knows what other $$$$ cards. He hadn't checked the price on cards in years, and it was a huge kick in the nuts when I told him he could have probably bought a house with those cards nowadays.

Sounds like my friend who had a Beta B/R Land destruction deck with mint condition cards including Black Lotus and all of the Moxen. It was late 94 when he had left his deck in his jeans pocket and his mom washed the jeans with the deck in them. Not really a bad trade/sale story but it hurts my brain nonetheless.

I cut up a foil daze for an art project in highschool. I had stopped playing magic for a few years so O had no idea it was worth what it was.. I still have part of that foil daze in my uncommons box, hurts me everytime I riffle through it lol. I also remeber trading some show and tells and intuitions for total jank when I was a kid.
I cancelled a preorder of Bonfires at $5 a piece...
I did the same for a playset of $12 Snapcaster Mage. :sadbanana:Needless to say, I was pretty upset for a while. Doesn't look super bad right now though...

I regret almost all the cards I've sold, because they're worth so much more now. I think sold a pair of Sensei's Divining Tops for like $4. Liquidating most of my collection did fiance a new set of a tires back in 2008, but had savings I could have used instead and should have held onto the cards.
What I lament most is not spending $25ish on on Magic when I first saw an ad for it in a comic book in way back in the day. Must have been Alpha/Beta/Unlimited. I didn't start playing until my mom convinced me and friend to switch from Spellfire in 4th Edition days. If I could go back in time I'd channel all the money I wasted on nonsense into original set cards and be rich today.
I started to play around 94 when I saw couple classmates playing in high school. Keep in mind, there is no internet and i am clueless the cards in each set.
Anyway, I thought the game was fun and start to play with them. Couple weeks after, I decide to buy a box. I went to the store and buy a box. Unfortunately, the store run out of revised box. Thus, i purchased a box of fallen empire. If i went to a different store, i would probably have a box of revised now.
Keep moving forward, I saw my friend play a green enchantress deck that use Bayou, Savannah, Taiga and Tropica Island. I thought the deck was good and copied his deck. Now, I am mad now because blue is my favorite color and I dont have Volcano Island, tundra and underground sea.
My biggest regard is knowing these MTG classmates. Now, thousands of dollars spend on MTG along with thousands of hours. I could use the money and time for something else.
Sold my collection a long time ago, i started during unlimited. I had a couple lotuses, bunch of moxes, pretty much a couple of each power 9, i had a ton of antiquities, dark, arabian nights, legends, ect... I sold the collection probably 1995 or 1996. I sold it to buy Warhammer 40k garbage. I never thought magic would last and i thought i was getting out with money in pocket...boy was i REALLY wrong.
One time I was buying a few packs. The shop owner asked if I wanted one off of the left side of the box. I said I was sure I didn't. So he opened the left pack and inside was a foil Geist and an Olivia Voldaren.

As for myself, I traded 2 Bonfire of the Damneds for a playset of Archwing Dragons right around the release of AVR.

Ah well.
1) This guy (my friend) goes and trades a Jace, Memory Adept when he was 30 dollars for a Worldslayer.:-/
2) Another kid I saw trade a Snapcaster Mage and Phantasmal Image for 2 Skirsdag High Priests.
3) To be fair, I traded a Clifftop Retreat for a Spinebiter and an Isolated Chapel when Innistrad came out for Sarkhan the Mad.
4) My biggest mistakes were trading my Snapcaster Mage for a Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas and another Snapcaster for something like 4 Kessig Wolf Runs (after Worlds 2011).
5) Finally, trading my Jace, Memory Adept for Karn Liberated because he looked cool (I don't regret this, I only wished I had gotten more stuff).
