I made a thread on the PucaTrade forums for people willing to accept foreign cards of any language, don't have time to manage a per language list, and I think it might get messy, so hopefully this works.
Well, this seems like an interesting concept. I like the idea of randomly finding out that cards you want are being sent to you.
I just joined, and I have a bunch of cards to send out tomorrow. Now to figure out what cards to add to my want list that the points I'll be getting will actually cover...
I just joined and added a haves and wants list. Sending out 3 trades but the more I look around it seems like there isn't much PucaPoints in circulation. I will continue and see how well this works.
Add lots of cards to your Want list. The amount of points you have at any give time will vary, so each person looking to send you cards will see a different portion of your Want list. The more cards on your list, the more likely you are to get something from someone at some point.
I think there's some strategy to the Want list, though. After all my sent cards are confirmed, I'll have about $36 in points. That makes me eligible to receive high cost cards like Intuition and Wooded Foothills. But people may send me a bunch of $0.50 cards, reducing my point total, making me ineligible for them. The strategy, then, is to remove low cost cards from your list to let your points accumulate and hope to get the higher cost cards.
But really, will anyone send me an Intuition or Wooded Foothills, or a lower cost Bloodstained Mire or Flusterstorm, or even a moderately priced Linvala or Demigod of Revenge? I've sent out some $5 cards because people have them on the Want lists and have the points to receive them, but would I send out a $10, $20 or $30 card? Maybe. Keep earning points and see what you receive!

The problem I see is that the total number of points available on the entire site will always be the same. There is no way to add to that total and the total is basiclly equal to the number of people that tested it in Beta (time 1000). Which is a number that we have no way of knowing. The first 3 trades I am sending out are only about $15 total so I'm fine with that, but there are so many people that want even the smallest of cards but don't have the points because there seem to be to few in active circulation. I actually have 3 inactive/unverified address people in my send screen with 1000 points each. Those are point that can't be used by the community.
They are debating allowing some points for donations, etc. But I think the issue is that some people are holding lots of points and possibly don't have enough mid value items on their wants. I have received some pretty good stuff, Snapcaster Mages, etc. so there are higher value items floating around.
I mainly look to trade into the staples I need, then I can always take those to my normal meetup and then trade them for bigger stuff, or just have more items that would appear on a want list to resend over PucaTrade later.

I am firmly in this camp - I think that with a greater # of points in circulation there would be a more active trade economy.
For my part, I suggest that a $10 donation to the site would garner you 750 points, allowing the site to maintain operating expenses and still provide a gradual infusion of new points.
Still, I am sticking with it, and I encourage anyone else who might have an interest to give it a try.
Yup, send cards to as many verified 1000 point users as possible to get their points into circulation. I'm sending two cards to Estonia after having send two to South Korea. Hopefully the site owners will delete unverified beta testers and, even better, redistribute their points to the enthusiasts like us.
Now, on a more fun note: I'm starting a PucaTrade Bug. Like a GeoCaching Travel Bug which people move from cache to cache, I'm going to send a note along with my trade.
The note will include:
- The date
- Who the trade was from
- My approximate location
- Who the trade is to
- The cards sent
- A tiny note
Whomever receives the note should include it with the shipment they send out, adding their info. If you make a new PucaBug (since you don't have an old one to send), give it a name!
How long we can keep a PucaBug going?
Did you get one you already had?
How far has yours traveled?
What's the most expensive or coolest card on it?

I am not an economist, but it seems to me that printing too much money (which is what adding points to the economy is) is bad for the value of each point. Granted, that would be an extreme, but it is something to be cautious of. There would have to be restrictions on how many points can be added to the economy in a given cycle, and how much any one person is allowed to receive via donation.

This is my thinking off the top of my head -
The 'value' of each point right now is about .01 - and the 'selling' price of items in the exchange is determined by an aggregate of real world sources trading real tangible items - far bigger volumes and market forces than on Puca. I don't see an expanded point base warping those values - real world $ drive any changes in those values, not Puca transactions.
Regarding the points in circulation let just suppose the following:
200 Beta members received 1000 points each to kick start the Puca economy - 200,000 points in total.
430 members currently trade in an economy with 200,000 points - leaving approximately 437 points per person. Less with each new member.
This makes trading difficult at times. I don't really want to make a trade that is less than 100 points in most cases - 200 in most cases. I usually feel it would be better to simply make a cash purchase when I factor in the price of postage
.
Members might in fact have more items on their want list that would allow me to make more trades but they won't show up because they have too few points, so I wait, hoping that they will get more points and I can send them more stuff. Because of this the time between trades increases and the economy slows. I am afraid this might turn some off to the experience, which is probably bad for everyone.
Granted my armchair quarterbacking is very unscientific, but I also haven't factored in for points outside of the USA that members may not want to try and trade for - I would love to help a guy out in Estonia but I really don't want to go through the hassle and expense of international shipping for 74 Puca points. We don't really know how many ( or few ) points occupy this limbo.
That said, I am entirely in support of a cautious approach to adding points - with limited exchange ( ie. 75% of our dollar value in points ) AND limited opportunities to purchase - perhaps $10 per month per member, or $15 per quarter - almost like buying a booster a month.
I do feel strongly that this is a make or break issue for the site, and I don't mean for this to discourage anyone from sharing the experience. Quite the opposite, I hope others will join the dialogue because ...
I really dig it - it's kind of a power to the people thing. For everyone.

My threshold is about 55 points (total), as that is the cost of a stamp. Some trades I have sent have been a loss for me with regards to shipping, but not by a ton and I like being able to help people out.
I would love to help a guy out in Estonia but I really don't want to go through the hassle and expense of international shipping for 74 Puca points. We don't really know how many ( or few ) points occupy this limbo.
He has a 'want' that I could send him for 416pts but I have held back as sending it will cost about $5. I guess I should just do it...done.
I am not an economist, but it seems to me that printing too much money (which is what adding points to the economy is) is bad for the value of each point.

There's probably an algorithm which relates the number of points in circulation to the number of users. Maybe it's something like each time the PucaTrade userbase doubles, more capital is needed.
Members might in fact have more items on their want list that would allow me to make more trades but they won't show up because they have too few points, so I wait, hoping that they will get more points and I can send them more stuff.
The important question is: do you initiate the trade, then wait to send the card in order to see the user's points rise so you can add more cards to the trade? I do that too, and I'm sure we all will once we can browse eachother's complete Want lists. But I wonder if this might lead to gridlock. You commit to a trade but don't send so your points don't go up, while someone else already committed to sending you a trade but didn't because they're waiting for your points to go up so they can send you more. People are waiting on eachother in a chain.
This gridlock would be broken by opening a case when you haven't received the card you were promised within two weeks. In the meantime, BigNickDigger, get more points so I can add more stuff to your envelope and send it!
It only cost me $1.20 to send two cards to South Korea. The USPS website says $1.25 to send two cards to Estonia. These prices are for 1oz letters including the non-machinable fee. $0.85 domestic vs. $1.20 around the world seems fair to me. My Estonia letter goes out Monday.

I don't do this, for a few reasons-
1- I will forget. I agree to the trade and package it all at the same time, then stick the envelope in my bag and take a trip to a mail box 1-2 times a day. If I don't then I know that I run the risk of forgetting.
2- I know that I don't like to wait, so I try not to intentionally make others wait longer than necessary.
3- I have no way to ensure that the person will have points opening up in the future, and the user might even make a trip to the local shop and pick up some cards off their list for a deck in the mean time.
The important question is: do you initiate the trade, then wait to send the card in order to see the user's points rise so you can add more cards to the trade?
Generally speaking no. Unless I know they are due for points soon - like when I have a package on the way from them - I won't do it.
I keep a log recording each trade and the appropriate info as I make it. I keep this until I ship out the items in question, then start over. I don't want to forget anybodies order any more than I want them to forget mine.
I generally ship on Mondays and sometimes Fridays, so I do have a short window of opportunity to 'fatten up' any package going out. I have found that Sundays bum me out a little bit 'cause I have almost no chance of seeing new points (!)
I do feel that the gridlock situation is real - if there a bit more to go around I could initiate trades more frequently.
Also, I have been wondering how the upcoming M13 release will play out on Puca. Even though it is not anticipated on the level of RTR, I wonder if it will exacerbate the gridlock issue ...
Matty476, if you're out there, please confirm your fracking address!!! I have like 500 points worth of stuff to send you.
Also, does anyone know if you can look at a specific member's want list? That'd be easier than just hoping you have a card they need entered in your Have List when there's literally 5,000 other cards you could be sending.

What seems to work best is to register in the Puca Forums and browse the want lists as well as post your own want list. It's really good to include as much of the small stuff - 'Cheap Eats' - as you can. It really helps you use as many points as possible in each transaction.
Also, if you have a little time you can do a search - by set has been best for me - and simply click on each card. I've compiled a short list of those that have wants and listed those that I have available in my haves.
Someday they'll have the ability to browse a user's complete Want list. Until then, people can post unusual and low-price wants in this thread so we know to fill their requests. I still need Outrage Shaman, Gravity Well and No Rest for the Wicked from Urza's Saga. Throw them in to a larger trade to me.
Adding new sets will be interesting because they depend on TCGPlayer pricing. How accurate are TCGPlayer prices during the first two weeks after a set is released, considering they're aggregated from retail stores which probably don't have pre-release prices like Star City Games.
I'll stick to my rule of "don't trade for new set cards until the prices settle". But I really need some Archaeomancers for my EDH decks!

I just put 14 letters in the mail to get sent out tomorrow morning. Hopefully I start getting some points by the end of the week.
I'm also hoping that a lot of the people in the "send" list get more points soon too. It's frustrating to see a list of 5-10 cards that someone wants that I have, and then realizing they have enough points to cover maybe 1-2 of those cards. It's just not worth sending someone 30 points of cards when I can see that I'll have another 30+ points of cards for them the moment they can afford it.

I received and confirmed packages from cmembers rewmanwilson, deadseashoals, drworm73, pineapple, zemogFC - putting a total of 2153 points back in circulation ...
"Postage due"? Aw man, I had to pay $0.20 per envelope to take delivery because only $0.45 stamps were used. $0.65 stamps are available to cover 1 oz non-machinable first-class letters. Avoid going in to the post office by using these stamps and writing "non-machinable" on the envelope. Also, envelopes over 1/4" thick are charged as parcel, so avoid using even the thinnest clam shell cases.

You can try committing to send 1-2 cards, then watch for a few days to see if that user gets more points so you can add more cards before sending. That has worked for me a few times.

Understandably this is a bummer. Good to get cards though.
On a different note, I want to encourage everyone who sends a package to suggest that they person receiving join the Puca Forums if they haven't already.
There are 400+ Puca members but barely 40 on the forums, which seem to be the most efficient way to share want lists.

Also, if you have a little time you can do a search - by set has been best for me - and simply click on each card. I've compiled a short list of those that have wants and listed those that I have available in my haves.

Good luck!
