I've been playing magic for almost a year now and have been loving it! I was planning on buying a booster box of M13 for $90. I've been reading that it may not be worth it right now to buy a box. What do you guys think? Thanks
Edit: okay, M13 sucks lol. I already got a playset of nocturnus, avatar, rancor, and primordial hydra (there was a glitch with vouchers lol) but I really want to buy a box. I don't have a lot of rares from AVR, aside from a cavern, foil sigarda, and gisela. Should I go for AVR?
I generally like core sets but M13 is just really bad.....nothing of intrest in it so far to justify a box (and only 1 mythic and 20ish rares left to be spoiled)
Pass on m13, buy singles, and hope return to ravnica has something to justify buying a box

Sometimes its fun to open boosters, even knowing the better way to obtain good cards is to buy singles. Basically, its like gambling.
But, for me, I want the prospect of "hitting the jackpot" when I open boosters; I want the chance at opening a cool/high value card. M13 doesn't have any of that, so my advice would be not to buy a box. Consider AVR or INN instead, if you really want to buy a box.

I usually buy a fat pack whenever a new set is released, but I don't think I will be investing for this year's core set (for many of the reasons laid out above). I'm gathering way too many fat pack boxes and die as well. The only rares I want look like they will be in the intro packs. So, I imagine the singles prices will be more affordable and the direction I will go.
Playsets of all the commons and uncommons run less than a box, then you can cherry pick the rares you want with the difference. Thats what i usually do, though if the packs are cheaper than usual i pick up a couple.
M13, and core sets in general, i don't/won't buy packs of.
Yeah the highlights of the set will be easily bought for less than the cost of the box. While it's sometimes a good idea to pre-order and then "flip" it for profit, this is likely one of the worst core sets in years IMO... Just buy your Rancors and save up for RTR.

In relation to this post, just today I saw a few playsets of M11/M12 (commons and uncommons) going for around $40 max (roughly 600 cards). Definitely a smarter play finance-wise to get the playsets like that then buy the rares/mythics you want from the set individually.
I get at least a box every new set. But I never buy a box. I play in (and historically do pretty well in) pre-releases and releases. Even when I do poorly I still end up with a box within a week or so. Then I draft with varying amounts of frequency depending on how busy I am and how much I like the format.
I probably end up spending like ~$1.5-2 less per pack than you do and also get hours of entertainment. Even when I was starting out and was much worse it was maybe +$.50/pack on average and still got hours of entertainment.
If you insist on buying boxes I would urge you to at least use the packs to draft with friends (you keep all the cards of course, I know I have drafted before like this and free drafts are awesome imo), or do sealeds to practice for GPs, even pack wars is better than nothing.

I write about cube and run cube drafts on magic online.
I don't think I can say no more right now. Just don't do it. Unless you play a LOT of casual and think a lot of the "junk" rares right now are fun to play with... then it MIGHT be worth it. But competitively, this core set stinks right now. That $90 might be better served picking up a playset (or two) of something from the set when it inevitably drops.
If you have to ask the question based solely on financial reasons, then no, booster boxes are not worth it.
You can easily buy a whole playset of commons and uncommons on average for about $30. Even at the discounted rate of $90 for a box, one of which you can probably get a common playset out of but no way would you get an uncommon playset, that leaves $60 for the chance of whatever rare or mythic and foils you might get.
For that $60, you can buy whatever rare and mythics out of the set that you want and not chance getting cards you don't want.
Monetary reasons aside, if you get a thrill out of breaking boosters, as I do along with many people, then that's the price you pay for this form of entertainment. If that's your thing, then it's worth the cost of whatever gives you kicks.
Coming from a foreigners point of view, it has always been my goal to be very financial-concious when I'm buying cards or investing heavily into a new set.
Typically a booster box in my country will set me back $150, and buying boosters individually is even worse value.
So with that in mind, typically I will try to buy bulk playsets of commons/uncommons which are general staples, as well as meta/popular rares which I may find useful when building decks at a particular time. Generally a few hundred dollars worth of cards gets me free shipping from the USA, so I normally don't purchase as frequently as most people do.
My point to this is, if you are looking to get 'serious' and start some higher level play than just the casual game with friends, whilst saving yourself some money, you would probably be better off doing something like I have been doing. Junk cards from a booster box you will inevitabley get just sit around and really just take up space. My philosophy is - I use everything I pay for.
Wow, thanks all of you for the thoughts. I'm going to come out and say it, I'm addicted to opening packs lol. But m13 sounds like a pretty damn ****ty investment. Is an AVR booster box worth it? I really want a box ha.

This is what smart people do. Leave the OOH FOIL OPEN PACKZZZ for the kids. Seems like every day there's a "what should I buy?" thread. The answer is always the same: If you want to get cards that you'll actually play, buy singles.

This is always the right answer. It's rarely monetarily viable, but can be emotionally satisfying.

This is why I started playing magic in the first place. It wasn't PT aspirations just making noobs cry by doing things that are perfectly fair.
I'll come out and say that I love the thrill of opening a box and I haven't done so in a while. This is a bit of a gift to myself (birthday's on Saturday). So the best booster box right now is probably AVR right? Or should I really wait until ravnica

Wait for Ravnica. Personally, AVR isn't my favorite set, and the original Ravnica was a lot more fun.

Every set that's not ludicrously overpowered is called "bad" nowadays, it seems. Sad. Anyways, for money, singles, for fun, box.
Whoever it was that said that you wouldn't get an uncommon playset out of it? Remember what a box contains. That's 36 x 15... 360 commons, 118 uncommons, and 36 rares, not counting foils. There are 249 cards in this block. You WILL be getting playsets of certain cards, many of them possibly uncommon.
Magic is about enjoying yourself. I like to see what I can get, and use those limitations to build decent decks. Limited building is fun. Pack opening is fun, because it doesn't give you infinities to work with. Me, I would go for fun rather than being a munchkin who cares only for card power.

AVR has 61 uncommons. To open a booster box with the expectations of playsets of any card is setting yourself up for disappointment. If you are cracking packs for the fun of cracking packs, then by all means, go for it. If you are cracking packs to get playable cards for constructed, don't be surprised when you need to supplement your box with more singles purchases.

Supporting a local store, and me and my girl split if halfsies, seems like a no brainer, even if there aren't many money cards.
