With Return to Ravnica coming up I was wondering what everyone thinks was the best set since then. I started playing around Alara so I don't have a huge pool to play from but, I liked Zendikar and Innistrad alot and hated scars.
It would be ROE for me, but I am more or a limited player then constructed. ROE limited has been ranked right up with RAV as one of the best sets for limited. IN would be in the discussion as maybe an honorable mention, but I personally hated Zen.
For me it has to be Zendikar. I just loved the flavor of the adventure world. I also liked a lot of the cards, mostly the red ones, and as the set I started really playing the game with I really don't think many sets will top it for me. I also considered its standard environment fun, regardless of cawblade. There were still decks that could beat it if they were willing to lose to Valakut, and the decks were powerful and fun when you didn't caught in Caw all day.
My first FNM I brought UR Pyromancer's Ascension and won beating out vamps and Valakut, and Pyromancer's Ascension is pretty much my favorite card ever, and it spawned my love of combo, so at the very least I'll always have fond memories of Zendikar.
I was not a big fan of Eldrazi at all. I think Innistrad is my favorite, infact may be my favorite set of all time (before that it was Legions). Another set I really liked was Morningtide.
New Phyrexia. Great power level, great art, great cards, a cool new mechanic that plays fun, a cycle of awesome legendaries, some of the best background flavor in Magic ever, lots of creative applications of earlier mechanics... Really, New Phyrexia is one of my favorite sets ever.
Innistrad is also really good. You can practically taste the flavor, and it also introduced a good amount of constructed cards without being bonkers. And I think DFCs are awesome.

The wedding is over. Now it's time for the honeymoon.
This thread is interesting. It just goes to show Wotc has to do different things to keep everyone happy. I am really surprised at the love for Zen. Personally Zen would be on the bottom of any list of sets since RAV. To each their own tho.
Honestly, there haven't been any standouts. Lots of good sets but nothing that makes me go "wow, this was amazing." If I had to pick one, I'd have to go with Innistrad. It was certainly the most unusual of the lot. Unless of course you want to count Planar Chaos or Future Sight. That whole block was kind of weird and while it did have some cool cards and future staples in non rotating formats, it was just, I don't know...can't put my finger on it.

Well I'd say ZEN was the first real set where their new design strategy really started to shine. It was a solid little set with everything in the right place. Might not have been FUN for some, but it was a very well designed set that really felt like they were grounding the game a bit more than Scars or Lorwyn did. Less gimmick, more good design.

It's the whole Limited/Constructed divide. For the most part, anyone who says ZEN > ROE is on the Constructed side, and anyone who says ROE > ZEN is on the Limited side.
Anyway, although I'm a fan of ROE limited, I think ISD is the better set on the whole. TPF is a great block -- maybe the best -- but no set in it is particularly amazing.
Is it normal to dislike a set when it first comes out but then when more sets come out people tend to look back on it much more favorably than they origannly did?

Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:12)

If it really is best set since Ravnica block I've gotta go with Timespiral Block. Just brought back so many cool cards and abilities, especially with planar chaos. I mean Damnation, Akroma, Angel of Fury, and the mangus cycles where awesome, and that was just the tip of the iceberg. I would say that Timespiral complemented RAV in that it brought back a lot of memories and player favorites.
Time Spiral with Lorwyn as a close second. Ya know, before the game became crazy OP.
I'm the other way around. I loved Lorwyn, although at first, I thought it was a bit stupid. Then I really enjoyed all of the types of decks that could be played; Faeries, Merfolk, Kithkin, BG Elves, G Elves, 5CC, and then later, Swans.
Time Spiral was also fun for me. I tried Pickles and other control decks. UB Mannequin was one of my favorite decks of all times.
Honestly, Ravnica was a great set, but I liked Lorwyn better. Time Spiral and Ravnica are probably tied to me. I liked Lorwyn the best since Mercadian Masques (but I should mention that I missed Judgment block until Mirrodin).

Another vote for Time Spiral block. That block really did it all for me - terrific limited format, unusually entertaining block format, and played really well in T2 both along with Ravnica and with Lorwyn, and lots and lots of nostalgia.
If the block after Return to Ravnica is Return to Time Spiral, I'll be a happy camper indeed Though I consider that immensely unlikely, as I think TS was actually considered a failure by R&D, as it catered to veteran players and not at all to new players.

That's what happened with Time Spiral block. It's hard to believe the block sold poorly when we look at how much love it has received here.
I've personally warmed up to it. I hated it back when it came after Ravnica (Mainly because I was a huge Ravnica fanboy), but I now like it a lot more. The main problem I have with the block is that it seems more like a collection of random cards than a unified block. However, I do love the complexity of the cards, and all the weird new ideas they tried out. It's like the opposite of Scars of Mirrodin/Mirrodin Besieged (Which were so unified, they were boring).

Flavorwise, shadowmoor really appealed to me..I loved watching the shift in lorowyn.
Overall though it has to be zendikar. Landfall is such a fun ability (Hedron crab and Ob nixilis were my favs). It also gave red an eternal staple creature or two

Time spiral was also my favorite post-rav block, as I just loved the number of themes they explored within it. Designs were clever and unafraid of being complicated. Also, as I'm sure many agree, Rav-TSP standard was a blast.
Lorwyn was also very fun, but I found that the rest of the block was disappointing. Additionally, I got pretty tired of the tribal theme near the middle of the whole exercise.
Finally, I really, really enjoyed M10. It is easily my favorite of the mythic era sets. Also, the fundamental flavor of each of the colors made me remember how much fun magic can be w/o convoluted planar politics and characters I don't really care about.

I think Zendikar is the best set. Landfall is an amazing mechanic and I loved the aggressive ZZZ limited environment. It also had a lot of really great flavor and some awesome cards.

Alara. Great flavor, cool **** all around. And Zendikar, one of the coolest planes so far.
