Following up my last post about your favorite set since Ravinca,I was wondering what everyone thinks the best boosterbox is to buy. I play T2 only so buying scars stuff is probably not worth it. I guess the real question boils down to what set is worth more Innistrad,Dark Ascension,or Avacyn Restored?
I'll agree that Innistrad is the best bang for your buck. It has a lot of value rares: all the duals, snapcasters, stromkirk nobles, etc. Two Planeswalkers at the mythic level, one of whom is a DFC, meaning he could pop up in the DFC slot in addtiion to your rare.
I mean, in Innistrad you can get 3 mythics in one pack, and while that's highly unlikely to happen, it does mean there's 3 chances for the mythic. Imagine opening a pack with a Liliana and a shiny Snapcaster or something.
yeah, Innistrad is the best bang for your buck if you are buying a booster box.

I will join the chorus of people who suggest Innistrad if you want to buy a box of a set that is legal in Standard. I might suggest that you wait for Return to Ravnica, and get a box of that when it comes out instead though.

At a SCG Open (the first one when Innistrad launched, I believe it was Indy) one of my friends bought a fat pack and opened up a pack that had a Liliana and a Garruk. So its definitely possible and worth pursuing since Innistrad has more staples than either of the other 2 sets. Or you could wait till next month and get a box of 2013.
Can anyone possibly give me a list of the money rares/staples/mythics in each set just so I can have almost the pros and cons lined up? That would be very helpful!:)

I was going to say Avacyn Restored, so without looking at the link, I'm going to agree here.

I am waiting for M13. And probably getting a box on release day since it is fun to open them in the store. And your new M13 cards will be highly sought after.
Unless you like the gambling of opening packs, none of them. The best way to spend your money semi-responsibly is on singles that you need, or speculating on them. Buying a booster box is a giant crapshoot in every aspect - you might get cards you can't use, don't want to use, or are Limited fodder, none of which are going to make it into your T2 deck.

This is why I started playing magic in the first place. It wasn't PT aspirations just making noobs cry by doing things that are perfectly fair.
If you just want the box with the highest value potential then that would be AVR. If you're buying a box to draft then definitely Innistrad though. 3x ISD is one of the best draft formats ever.
But like Anne said, if you just want cards you're better off buying the individual cards you need and saving money that way. Sure if you buy a box you might open that sweet Tamiyo or Bonfire of the Damned, but you're unlikely to come close to opening all the cards you need to build a competitive deck.

Boom! This! Surprised it went this many posts before someone said singles.
Seriously. Singles. I'm sure there are cards you want. Buy them. Whenever a new set comes out, I buy 1 box for commons/uncommons/kicks, and singles of cards I need or think will have trade value. It's so much easier trading your dozen Restoration Angels, and Bonfire/Entreat playsets than the jumble of mostly crap you get in a box.

Foreigning out SI, currently 33/75. The only thing better than a T1 kill is doing it with cards no one has ever heard of and/or can't read. If anyone has any of the usual pieces, PM me. I'm willing to buy/trade.
The reasons to buy sealed include limited, gambling (by opening the packs, which has a negative expected value) or long-term speculation.
Limited I haven't enjoyed AVR limited, but did enjoy drafting INS and DKA. So I would personally buy the latter two over AVR for limited. I enjoyed this punch cute animals article.
Gambling A few others have posted on why purchasing singles are better value now. "Gambling" is actually too harsh - many people just enjoy the experience, even if it does have negative expected financial value. For those, the joy of opening the packs is equal or greater to the financial value lost.
Long-Term Speculation Sealed product has tended to reliably appreciate in the past. Those who consider themselves MTG financial experts have recommended sealed as a relatively safe investment strategy (at least relatively safe compared to other possible MTG investments).
This is pretty cool - how are the expected box values calculated?
I've been doing this in Excel (using card probability and the TCG low price, which is most indicative of the price I'd actually pay for singles online) and results are similar - AVR, then INS, then DKA. Using this methodology, I have AVR at around $90/box, but that presumes that all cards actually have some value. IRL, most cards in the set have no trade value and if store buy values are substituted for the cards that can't be used or traded, the numbers look far worse.

"DFC" = "Double Faced Card". Delver of Secrets is a DFC.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)take this link, and adjust the set selection at the bottom. easy quick look at set by set 3.99$ and up (also adjustable but already filled in).
