I played Legacy FNM last night, at a store I'd never been to before, and had 3 of 5 opponents either ask if they could, or say that I could, mulligan to 7 on the first mulligan. My answer was no each time. I don't know if they were new players, or if its this store's rules, but I lol'ed a bit.

I had a Hellrider in my graveyard and one in my hand. I cast the one in my hand and my opponent responds with Surgical Extraction and said that I can't cast it now because he exiled it with Extraction...
Jace bounce was a -1. He could do it 3 times before he would die. Liliana can only do it once before having to do her +1. Overall very disappointed with her unless we get Madness.
Crap, you're right, she's not as good as one of the single most overpowered cards ever printed. Unplayable!
When I first started playing I started in Ravnica block... where I thought the appropriate use of Shielding Plax was to put it on my opponent's creatures so they couldn't pump them.
What I find even more amusing is old player arrogance.
But that's another subject.
You would know a lot about that subject, eh?
On-topic: One time at FNM I was running some random control deck; a kid tells me that Venser's Journal would be "sick" in my deck. New players wildly misevaluate cards and their usefulness in ways that I literally do not comprehend.
When I first was taught Magic back in 2000 I was told that mana produced from lands or cards never went away so it was easily possible to get 100 life from Stream of Life. I quickly learned that wasn't the case.
When i first started, my friends and i were all under the impression "regenerate" was anything that might bring back a creature, so when my guy got Terminated, I couldn't Rise From the Grave or Disentomb him
I was told that if I "forgot" to untap then whatever was tapped stayed tapped.
the way I was taught to block was the way you block with banded creatures.
I was also taught that upkeep was before untap and that you drew a new hand when I ran out of cards.
God it makes me shudder. Some of them still prefer these methods and claim that "that's how it used to be in the beginning" and "Why do they have to change the rules all the time?"

I'm pretty sure this one stems from to many players starting out playing the Duels of the Planswalkers games, where it lets you mulligan to 7. It's an issue wizards really needs to deal with as it's come up a few times at my own LGS from new players.
The first time I played, (I was ten) my friend told me that you had to tap lands and creatures after you used or attacked with them. So he turned my stuff sideways for me to show me.
On my next turn, I left my cards sideways and turned them upside down to show that I tapped them again.
Another kid who saw us playing called us out and believed that once something was tapped you could never untap with it.

They call me Hank Hill because I bring the pro-pain.
there was a guy at school that would little plastic beads in the shape of things like stars and seahorses and things that he used as counters. anything he tapped he would put one of these on, but not actually turn the card sideways.
when i first started playing, i thought you would attack the creatures and you couldnt attack the player. yes, this was before YGO before anyone comments lol.
Met a guy who thought you could play Sol Ring in Modern. Trolololol
Hey, it's in a new card frame
When I started, I had a blue deck. My main kill conditions were enchanting my opponent' lands with Psychic Venom and trying to deck them with Ancestral Recalls.

around ravnica time, i overheard a conversation going something like this:
"im going to make an izzet deck"
"which clan is that"
"blue red"
"oh ok, im gonna play red green and white"
"can't , thats not a guild"
"you mean you can only make 2 colors decks?"
"yeh and you need the legendary creatures from each clan"
i laughed a little but this isnt actually rules just gameplay ignorance
The other day I saw two girls playing in my local game store and saw that for some reason they rarely attacked or blocked.
Then I discovered that they though that if a blocker dealt more damage than necesary to kill a creature the rest of the damage would be dealt to the attaking creature's controller.
After that I sat down to look at their game and saw many other amusing odd rules they thought the game had. It was... odd. I corrected them of course when necesary
When I first started playing I went by the 20 creature, 20 spell, 20 land rule.
I also thought regenerate allowed you to return a creature from the graveyard to the battlefield. I had a friend with a deck full of regenerators and Fallen Angel that would always kick our butt. The deck was terrible once we found out what regeneration really does.
I still believe regeneration makes more sense as an ability that allows you to return that creature from the graveyard to the battlefield but I digress...

I started out on magic by buying a duel deck to play with my brother... We misinterpreted the rules about mana and lands and thought that you have to tap your lands at the beginning of your turn, and that that mana last until your end of turn.
Needless to say, this lasted a few games, then we asked ourselves "wait... what about instants?" and re-read the rules.

Please do not have food at the tables. We do not need a messy play area. No, you can not use a Sierra Mist-ic to fetch a Batterspill.

Here's a little gem of a convo I heard while sitting around at an FNM.
Guy 1: Here, put this (Bloodbraid Elf) in your deck, it's really good.
Guy 2: I can't, I don't have any yellow mana in my deck.

Hmmm...new player ignorance...
Well, when I was first starting to play, I thought all decks had to be 20 land, 20 creatures and 20 spells.
No wonder I lost all the time.
You would know a lot about that subject, eh?
