Well not going to a prerelease means missing out on the extras and Helvault n stuff. But 40$ is a lot. That's like 6 something a pack? Man tough choice, but seriously, 60 miles to the nearest wizards authorized shop?
You can easily take a LGS out of the loop for everything but tournaments.
The magic of Ebay and CCG websites can demolish his pricing structure if you feel its not fair.
I rarely ever buy singles from my LGS because I can't justify paying the markup under 99% of circumstances and I don't even see markup like you are talking about.
Boycotting the store is a good idea as long as you make it clear why you are boycotting.
I wish my 4/4s with haste and first strike that acted as Goblin Warchiefs were better and didn't die to instants and overshadowed all other 4 drops in the format. And that they had evasion too, and some way to dodge wrath effects.
FNM: 7 euro
Draft: Never seen one lately, the last one was abou 18 euro
Sealed: 28 euro.
The problem is that a store in another city make it costs:
Sealed 20 euro, 8 less. I still don't understand the price differences.
PS: i know the OP feeeling, you shoul go to another shop eve if it's an hour away, better if you go with friends.

Those prices would convince me to drive the 60 miles to another store. $145 boxes would ensure my money wouldn't go near him. $10-$15 each / $40-$50 a box more than offsets the gas cost to go that far. Just do it.
Get people to speak with their wallets. Sucking up and paying the price only encourages this type of behavior.
I'll echo what everyone else is saying and encourage the TC to go to another store. There's a card store in our town with ridiculous prices, after two visits we said forget it and went to a cheaper, much much more friendly place. We haven't looked back since.
The place I used to play had the worst pay outs for FNM's I have ever seen but knew there prereleases would get a ton of people into there store and buy other stuff so they have pre release at 25 which is very good, and the prize payout is nuts. for a 32 people tourney, first places gets a box and second place gets half of box and they keep cutting it down by half for 3rd, 4th etc.
IF I am paying 40 bucks for a prerelease, that LGS owner better be serving me drinks and getting me a sammich whenever I want it. Thats kind of nuts.

Yea, those are MTG Bars. What can I say, I am a dork
FNM is free
Drafts are $12 with no prizes, $15 with prizes. Few weeks ago he had a free standard tournament that had raffles for playmats and promos and also $8 drafts all day long. Winner of a draft got entry into the next draft for free.
I think prereleases were usually $20-$25 if I remember.
That sounds awful, I'd either so somewhere else (carpool with your friends if gas money is a problem) or play mtgo.
that owner sounds crooked exploiting his loyal customers for more money. He doesn't deserve your business and if you go somewhere else and others follow maybe he'll learn a lesson.
EDIT:
FNM for 7 euros sounds just ridiculous.

I did a search, and the closest sanctioned shop to where I live is 75 miles away. And they only want $30 for the prerelease. We are strongly leaning towards doing that route. I appreciate all the suggestions.
I discovered pretty quickly to not buy cards there. I order online, which is somewhat disappointing as I like supporting local businesses, but if they want to rip me off, they won't get my money.

That's only 15 miles which is only like another 10-15 minutes of driving. Definitely worth it if you're carpooling. You can meet new people too!
If the prices at your LGS are too expensive then tell the owner/manager that your business will have to move to websites like eBay and online vendors because his prices are not competitive.
Have the community rise up against the guy/boycott his store. That's what I'd do, as $40 for a prerelease is outrageous. $30 has almost always been the cap for what I'd pay for a magic event outside of grand prix's and other really high caliber events with huge prizes on the line.
I suggest you go to the other store. Also, buy boxes online as you can usually get boxes for under 100 after shipping online and you get 30 more packs out of the deal as prereleases are sealed events with 6 boosters. So you essentially get 30 more boosters for 60-70 dollars more, which is quite good as you get more cards and you get to crack more packs. Or you can draft/sealed with the packs.
Overall, go to the other store is my suggestion. 15 more minutes for a better sounding venue makes it an easy choice in my eyes.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
I find it more outrageous his FNM (drafts?) is $25 than the prerelease being $40.
$25 for an FNM? Better be draft. Is it win a box? Cripe, my LGS will do $20 8 man win a box.
Most stores do two different types of draft FNM. Either a $15 entry fee where you keep what you open and you get packs/store credit as prize ($2-3 per person for prize pool) or an $8-10 draft where you redraft the rares and only get FNM promos.
I am still in shock for the $25 draft with 3-2-1 prizes.

I was done with FNM after the first time I tried. I now buy boxes online and can do 8-person drafts with 6-4-2 prize support for about $14-16 each, depending on the set. This is such a better alternative, and I can play with my friends, people I'd rather draft with in the first place.
The problem is that I am in a small community and he owns the only sanctioned store (there is another, unsanctioned one, but they are mostly Warhammer). He has the monopoly, as it were, and acts accordingly. I am not sure how he gets a consistent group to play every Friday, prerelease, leagues, etc.
I think Americans severely underestimate how expensive Magic is outside the U.S. Up here booster packs are already 4.50, and it's not like there is a short supply of retailers. Event decks are $30-$40 depending on popularity. Duel Decks are usually $30 - $35. Singles are also similarly priced; most stores will do a flat $20/Mythic, $5/rare, $1.50/Uncommon, $.25/Common, with expensive cards above that. There is a lot of variation up and down both ways, depending on the store, but nothing ever as cheap as MSRP. And I live in a major city.

Our pre-releases have always been $30 flat with prizes awarded for each win in the swiss. Our shop has lots of competition so they do try to make themselves stand out

Yeah, I am aware that the overseas market is quite different. A $5 trinket in America will cost about £5 in England, even though its about $8. I'm actually visiting London this summer and plan on doing the M13 prerelease there
Go to another store. Clearly they know there isn't anywhere close, and if the increased cost doesn't linearly equal increased prize payout, then to the hell with the greedy LGS Owner(s).
If you cant get to another store, 4 of you could buy a box for $100 (a normal sealed price for 4 ppl), and play sealed for the last 12 packs, or do something interesting like 4 pack sealed and 2 packs of draft.
Prereleases have been $40 for as long as I remember at my LGS...
Being Australian myself, it is a fair price - they have to factor in postage to another country and prize support (yes, they do send in bulk, obviously, but still...)
Up until around Mirrodin Besieged, it was $35 since I started playing in my area.
